Jerry Sullivan writes about sports streaks that will outlast Joe
Dimaggio's hitting streak in 1941...

"Michelle Kwan's eight straight U.S. figure skating titles. We're in
an era when 15-year-olds win and and skate directly to the Ice
Capades. Kwan's streak, still active, is one of the most underrated in
history."

It's always nice to see a regular sports writer give skating some
respect.

I won't bash Kwan, but the Haydenettes run of synchro titles is impressive too.

Which 15 year old won and went directly to the Ice Capades??

I think the writer was just being satirical in that remark.

AndI wonder about saying that Kwan's winning streak is "under-rated"?

What does THAT mean???

Ah, journlism... 8-)

Tara Lipinski didn't run off to the Ice Capades, but she turned pro not long after her plane ride home from Nagano in 1998.

It is good that they are giving skating some credit.

Agreeing with Tessie, I too thought the author was referring to Tara Lipinski when she turned pro after 98 and joined Stars On Ice. Sarah Hughes came to mind as well...I know she was at school last year, but she was 16 when she won the Olympics and is now with Stars On Ice.

You guys are taking the writer far too literally, I'm pretty sure he is speaking in very general terms.

meaning ... generally speaking, young phenoms win the Olympics or sometmes a World title, and then very shortly there after, if not immediately there after, retire from the eligible ranks choosing to join the professional ranks or perform/tour in an ice show of some description.

also meaning ... Michelle Kwan's skating achievements are under-rated (in his opinion) in so much as the remainder of the journalistic sporting world hasn't paid as much attention to her "streak" as they otherwise might have had Michelle been a golfer or tennis player or some such other athlete.

I thought his article was very flattering and respectful.
