According to an article in a Japanese newpaper this past month:

Mai Asada wins Japan's all-nation model audition competition

Mai Asada, the older sister of Mao Asada; reigning World Junior Champion, has just won Japan's All-nation model audition yesterday. With her win, she announced that she'll leave competitive skating and move on with her modeling career.

Mai finished 8th at the Japanese National Championships this year well below Miki Ando, her sister Mao, and Fumie Suguri. The fact that Japan's current Junior and Senior level ladies fields are very deep with talent may have contributed to her decision to leave skating.

Wow, that is so weird! Only in Japan could a girl who's 5'4" (162cm) win a modeling contest. But according to this news article, it's the second annual "Mo-dol" contest (HUH?!), where the winner is chosen based on her "model-idol-mode" factor. O-o-kay. . .! Too bad she couldn't perform for them on ice, but her ballet must be pretty good. I wonder if she's going to turn into a TV personality now. . .?
