View Full Version : Disney's Ice Princess Movie

Saw a trailer for Ice Princess last month, which opens March 18th. I'm sure it won't get an academy award, but I know we're going to see it anyway since my kids love Michelle Trachtenburg, who stars in this movie and hosts a Saturday night TV show that we always watch.
Basic premise: brainy newcomer decides to start figure skating. She uses her math/science knowledge to figure out how to perform each maneuver and easily qualifies for high-level competitions. (Yeah, like that can happen!)
Cute, but Michelle's not going to be thanking the Academy for this one.

I have yet to see a skating movie that I liked. Almost every single one inaccurately portrays competitive skating. My big pet peeve is where they have the competitions with the lights turned down and with spotlights. I noticed a trailer for this new movie that showed a small clip of what looked to be a comp with dimmed lights. I shuddered. I may be wrong, but it looked that way to me. I'm planning to see it and hoping it is one of the better skating movies though but the premise sounds far fetched to me.
Just an aside, I think they should also do a reality series on TV about real figure skaters. Not like American Idol or Survivor or anything like that. Just something real, maybe following the lives of several skaters of various levels and ages. I'd watch it!

The film has a very unrealistic plot...But I still can't wait for it to be released in the UK! There's not much about ice skating over here, so it's a special treat when there is!

Not very realistic but my kids will love it. It certainly can't be worse the "The Cutting Edge" where they panned the camera instead of actually skating! I still remember "Ice Castles" with Lucy ?? (she was also in a Roger Moore James Bond film) fondly but, alas, I'm showing my age.

I pulled out my old "Ice Castles" RECORD on Sunday, looking for music for a program. I've checked that album a million times and frankly, I hated the music for actual skating. It was okay (but boring) in the movie.

Okay, so I was asleep and maybe there already is a thread, but anyone have any background blurb -- specifically, who is the skating double?
Looks like Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano do cameos as themselves as commentators.

Oops, sorry -- looks like a thread already in the "Shows" folder. Moderator can move this.

i just find it funny how she's able to land a triple after figuring out the pysics equation. i've taken more physics than i care to acknowledge, and it hasn't made me any better of a skater, even after we touched upon figure skating. knowing how much rotational equilibrium is necessary for a spin hasn't made me a better spinner (btw, i'm sorry if it's not rotational equilibrium and something else, but i remember we did a problem with a spinning figure skater, and i think it was in the rotation chapter).

I hear Jennifer Robinson was the body double for the movies star. A few other skaters from Mariposa were also cast in the movie made in Toronto.

the first time I was on figure skates someone mentioned to me the cutting edge. I wonder why (hehe).
Anyway I can't get over the fact that michelle was in a couple of movies where she was in college, and now goes back to high school. I guess she's my age though.
I would definately watch a reality show about figure skaters though, espcially if they showed men. But I doubt it would ever happen.

Just please, please, don't put Tonya Harding or Christopher Bowman in it!

I agree. If it could all be boiled down to solving some physics equations, I'd be world champion by now. Well, someone might trump me at physics, but I'd be doing triples anyway. This is an instance where it's less about knowing what to do and more (much more) about actually doing it.

Why thank you! My friend thought of it, seeing as it ties in with a show we;re both addicted to, and if you say it out loud, I could use it for when I'm a millionaire and have my own ice rink.
Melzorina / Mel's Arena!
I could be wrong about the skating thing, but I personally feel that there isn't much coverage on skating over here, sure there are loads of skaters, but the US has a lot more skating on TV etc. All we get is Worlds, Euro's and of course the Olympics on British Eurosport. I'll have to look into that some day!

Im sorry but this movie sounds really cheesy. I saw the preview and in my opinion it is going to convince millions of little kids that they can be olympic skaters in a month. The little kids arent going to understand the humor of a math equation enabling you to skate. If you ask me the movie was a set up between Disney and the skating federations as a way to convince little kids to sign up for skating lessons!

Hmmm. You may have a point, even if it's not intentional. There are a lot of coach/instructors who would probably appreciate the marketing plan of that. The PSA would like it, as long as the coaches in the movie are PSA-Certified Let's all look to see if the arenas in the movie have PSA banners hanging up -- it would be a telling instance of co-branding!
At the very least, the attendance at Disney on Ice shows should start going up!:P

I thought she landed a triple lutz on her first go...From the trailer it looks like it's her first attempt at a jump.
Also about the cheesiness, cheesy films are great, and anything to do with ice and I'm there like a shot, even if it's just someone slipping an ice cube into a drink...

well, the rink today had a lot of posters advertising the movie. i think they were also adverstising some sort of special screening or something, if you bought the tickets from the skate school. so they may be using it to get people signed up.

As a physics major I can tell you it does boil down to a few equations.
Figure skating is all about the angular momentum. They have a picture of sarah hughes in the first chapter of my university physics II book.
So yes you could work it about and estimate the impulse you'd need to produce to pull off a triple lutz, but it wouldn't help you. Your head performs those sorts of equations every time. Figuring it out on paper is just a more nerve wrecking way of doing what a good instructor could, and it wouldn't give you the neccessary sense of balance.
Okay, sorry to nerd this topic up.

I personally am looking forward to this movie. I am also a sucker for cheesy Disney flicks and although the movie seems unrealistic, I think the main idea behind it is going to be a good one. I don't really like Michelle but I saw her in Eurotrip and she plays on Buffy, so she's not that bad.
I think that it promises to be a comedy/tad bit of a tearjearker, I can't wait for it to come out!

I really disliked the Princess Diaries' books - the first one repeatedly referred to french kissing. Loved the movies, though. I'm sure this movie will be as sweet as the Diaries' movies. I wonder if there's a book for Ice Princess?
On another note, for you Californians, the "El Capitan" (SP?) theater is offering tickets to see the movie followed by a skating session somewhere. It's a great idea -- Radio City and Rockefeller Center should get together and offer it for us New Yawkers!
I sound like a carnival barker, so I'll stop promoting now. I did like the USFSA's contest -- tickets for 50 friends!?! I don't think I KNOW 50 friends. I'd have to farm out the tickets to my kids! LOL

From the trailer I've seen, this movie sends a bad message to little girls.
I don't have a problem with the unrealistic nature of learning triples in a few months.
My problem with the movie is that from the looks of the trailer, this girl gets made fun of for being really smart and good at math (heaven forbid!), and only becomes accepted when she fits into the mold of pretty ladylike skater. I don't even have kids and I think it's a bad message for little girls.

I love The Princess Diaries series. So much more interesting than the movie. As for the French kissing stuff, well, girls Mia's age think about that. And some do it as well. I didn't think it was out of place at all. JMHO. :)
As for Ice Princess, I do agree with manleywoman, not the best message to send. But it looks like a cute fluffly skating movie that I will probably see. At synchro nationals they were handing out promo skate guards with the logo on them, posters, and passes for a Boston screening of the movie. I love getting free skating stuff! :)

The girl playing the lead has some actual skating talent. There have been quite a few interviews, clips, and behind the scene stuff on the Disney Channel this past week or so. She's got a very nice spread eagle and Ina Bauer. She worked with a skate pro for about 5 months before filming started, according to one clip.

The ads for Ice Princess are running on the CHUM television stations. Today was the first time I have seen one. Looks like its going to be the usual ... "lets start with a Triple Axel as your first jump" type of movie. I won't go to the theatre to see it, but I'd probably rent it when it goes DVD.

despite my low threshold gag reflex for cutsie girlie "stuff" anything that promotes female participation in math/science (as the rude promo shows) will solicite my support. i sure hope the movie lives up to it's self-promoting billing about that and doesn't end up the the kid dropping out of the "egghead" set in favor of the glamourous skating biz.

No, cause see- Tara Lipinski spent years and years sacrificing her health, body, and childhood to become an elite figure skater. She didn't spend two weeks figuring out how to do a triple jump.
And personally, I hate white dresses on the ice. The dress reminds me more of something you'd find at the Disney store than an actual competition dress. Which, clearly, makes sense.

Release time for Ice Princess not a smart move by Disney. Why? Well, I went to see it and ended up one of only 10 in the audience watching it. Most skating fans that aren't die hard fans have moved on to other things after Worlds have been shown on TV. Most skaters need a break from all the training and competition around this time before either going on tour or starting Spring Skating School. The low audience turn out shows that we at this time of year are thinking about other things.
Now if Disney would re-release it say in November to coincied(sp) with the Grand Prix Season and qualifying for Canadian sectionals and US regionals, then they would clean up at the box office.
I do however think that Ice Princess will do very well on DVD especially because Disney is apt to add goodies to the DVD like dressing up a skater with costume and other games. It will be more available to the 5 to 12 year old crowd to which this movie is more suited. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the film as an inspirational piece but that's just because I was watching Jennifer Robinson double who is from my town and because it gears me up to compete this coming week at Adult Canadians. A few times they forgot to put Michelle's face on Jen's body. Watch for these boo boos.

I really want to see it , but it does put the downer on skating a little.
I mean..its saying to little kids and younger skaters that after 2 weeks of skating you will be doing the triples just like Michelle Trachtenburg but it's not like that.
I will definetly go see it because its to do with skating but I don't think they planned the movie very well at all and I also think that this is just a quick way to get thousands of new skaters into the clubs because no doubt after every 6 year old sees this they will want to be like "the girl on the screen".
Some people say it is cheesy, but hey what do you expect its a Disney movie :).

Well All I can say is I hope it comes out in Australia and if it does ...Well we are going to see it!
I don't care what any of you say it's JUST a Disney movie with a feel good ending... So what if she lands a triple in 3 weeks, so what if she's in a white dress..since when has any Disney Movie been real life.......(oh I forgot about Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians, The Princess Diaries and Pirates of the Caribbean so they do make SOME real movies <VBG>)
My Daughter is going to LOVE it...because she loves Skating... she is going to "know" some of what she sees on the big screen which will make it a little real to her AND...she loves the Magic of Disney movies.
This movie may bring kids to the rink, more income to coaches, more interest in Figure skating AND it may not...who cares!!!
I say just go along and stop being such an adult ..be a kid and remember the Magic... I say stop growing up!!!

I took two 7 year olds and a 5 year old to the movie on Friday afternoon. They had a wonderful time! You see, they didn't get any of the story line - the boy / girl thing, the nastiness stuff - they just enjoyed the skating. At this age they also don't have a sense of time. They didn't see it as two weeks to a triple, they just saw kids working at their skating. The conversations in the back of the car on the way home were all about how hard they would need to practice to be the the girls in the movie. I must admit I was worried, but I needn't have been. Hate to say it, but I recommend it for this age group.

I have not seen this movie, and do not plan to. However, eight of my learn-to-skate girls went to see the movie over spring break, loved it (they are aged 6-9), brought their friends skating on the public session, and now our beginning level learn-to-skate classes for the next session are FULL.
Children are more willing to suspend disbelief in movies than adults, I guess.
As for Disney, I wonder why they released the movie THIS year instead of NEXT year, after the Olympics, when more of the general public is in the figure skating mood? Just curious.

I think companies like Disney actually make MORE money with the DVD release than the actual theatre showing. If they release it in theatres now then they can do a huge hype for a DVD release by the Olympics. Also the winter Olympics don't have as big a draw here in the states as the Summer Olympics do, so releaseing the movie in theatres around the Olympics wouldn't add much to viewership...Just a thought.

I went to see this over the weekend. It was cute, and out of touch with reality. The skating scenes were good, and I really liked the actors/actresses.
I wasn't expecting the college professor/mother to be a strong feminist. The "I would cry if I ever saw you wearing a skating dress." line really changed my opinion of the movie. From that point on, I was rooting for the kid to go to the Olympics. (Which could have happened if the movie was a few minutes longer! LOL!)
I think the comments about the age range being 5 - 12 years is true. My 14-yr old enjoyed the movie (and the huge bucket of popcorn) but wasn't inspired by it -- as she put it, "It takes more than physics to learn to jump." I guess she won't be majoring in that subject. Hahaha
I don't think I would purchase the DVD, but I would certainly rent the movie another time. Didn't see any PSA banners, but there were enough USFS and Snowplow Sam references.
Ironically, the group lesson program is accurate: they had kids of all ages, sizes, and abilities in that one class! Anyone who's taught at a zany group lesson program, where groups are just thrown together randomly, can relate to the experience.

I went to see the movie last Friday. Yes I am a huge skating fan, my 20 year old son used to skate competitively and now tours with Disney on Ice and in my opinion it was a great feel good movie. Like someone mentioned, everyone is too worried about girls thinking they will be landing triples in a matter of weeks. It really did not come across that way. They show her getting up early every day, riding her bike to the rink, doing school work, being exhausted, they really did not make it look that easy. You must remember they only have 2 hours to show everything.
That being said, when I talked to my son on the phone last week and told him that I had seen the movie he laughed at me. He thinks the only possible thing that could be good about that movie would be the cute actress. I told him he's wrong.....I don't think he will every go see it.
Cheers!

It's a movie and I can't wait to see it. Who cares if it's not 100% realistic or even close to that. It's a skating movie. It's not like there are a whole lot of skating movies out there, so kudos to Disney for making one. The tots that I teach who have seen it, love it. Maybe it's because by day I'm a Marketing Director and by night I'm negotiating with 5 year olds which marker to draw their edges with, but think like a little kid when you see movies like this. That is just my opinion and to each their own, but don't worry so much about its impact. It's just a nice Disney film.
Note...I also love the Cutting Edge and Ice Castles...blue line, blue line, blue line. :)

I taught on Saturday, and one of the kids, who's been skating for years, came in and asked:
"Is it true that if you don't have an axel by the time you're 12, you'll never get anywhere in skating?" Apparently, the question was raised as part of a discussion about this movie. (Mind you, I don't think this kid competes outside of small, local No Test competions.)
The Director was, as always, nice and told her that she needs to work on all of her jumps and do the best she can.
Privately, she said she's seen a jump in inquiries about 12-and 13-year olds interested in lessons. She says the movie's driving interest in skating.

I went to see the movie this weekend. Not good. I'm glad I went to a matinee and didn't pay full price!
Here's my list of positives:
the notion that you should do what you're passionate about
And here's the list of negatives:
cliche dialog
mediocre acting
the perpetual doe-eyed look on the face of the main character
numerous factual errors about skating (recitals --> regionals??)
the entire premise of the movie
the 2-dimensional stereotypes
the amount of disbelief we're asked to suspend to believe that the arm flapping and orgasmic facial expressions on the ice = artistry. (Whoa! I just got a visual of Evgeny Plushenko. Maybe that doesn't belong on this list.) ;)

The DVD-sales tie in postings made me wonder: do they have enough time for a sequel before the Winter Games next year? Then Disney can sell the video at holiday time, and have the followup in the theaters in time for the Olympics! As I said, had this movie been 30 minutes longer, the lead character would have been vying for an olympic medal.

Disney has been doing a lot of straight-to-video sequels, maybe they have that in mind?
Haven't taken the girls to see the movie yet. Weekends are too busy around here in March and April, with the end of synchro season, the beginning of softball, and a few dance competitions thrown in...

cute movie, but i don't get the criticisms that it's not realistic. of course its not realistic but it isn't any different from any other disney-type sports movie geared towards kids
if it inspires a few more kids to take up lessons, then good! they'll figure out reality later, i'm sure many of us as young kids all had unrealistic aspirations too
i don't think it sends a bad message at all. casey is good at math/science but doesn't have her heart in it, which her mom is pushing her to study. instead casey uses her math talents to make friends and do what she loves, and i think that's a better message.
its a cute, cheesy movie. there are several documentary-like ballet movies out there are realistic and I enjoy myself but i couldn't imagine a little kid sitting through them.

I watched this movie a couple of days ago and to be honest I didn't really like it ALL.
I had high expectations for it, seeing that I am a skater and that skating is a big part of my life but.. I just wasen't "feeling" the movie at all.
Maybe its because I know what it takes to get to a stage like that...it's long and hard commitment and maybe thats what ticked me off about it..showing her doing a toe-loop to a triple toeloop in the movie time span of about 20 minutes?
I know this was a Disney movie and most disney movies are unrealistic but still..I had hopes that this movie would be a great hit in my mind but it just wasn't.
Also I do think that this movie was suited for a much younger audience of skaters or non skaters..because unlike me they are in to all the fantasy stufff but still..On the bright side I did like the jumps:).

from a skaters point of view, yeah....its gunna b cheesy cuz we know how long it takes to get where Michelle got. but look at it from a kids point of view, which is the target audience. its not like disney is expecting teenagers to go see this and actually find it believable.
i got to be an extra in the movie and it was tons of fun. so i think that was the only reason i was excited for it to come out. lol. :P

My mouth was hanging open (not for the popcorn, since nausea set in during the very first scene) in HORROR for almost the entire movie. I thought this movie was an insult to figure skating. YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK!
I could not believe Disney assumed the audience would be that ignorant. Hello, haven't they heard of "technical advisors" ? I would think Disney would be able to afford them but either they a) had trained chimps posing as technical advisors or b) the technical advisors walked off the set because they knew the movie was a joke.
I wonder if USFSA knew they were mentioned repeatedly (or with signs) in this movie. I can't believe they'd endorse something as awful and inaccurate. What made me the most disappointed was the message that you can rise from Snow Plow Sam to Junior level within weeks (not years) and with very little effort. What about the tests you have to take to get there? What BS kind of message is that? And, what about those nasty skaters and coaches with the over-the-top CLICHE attitudes? Oh PUKE!
I guess you can tell I hated this movie. Even my daugther and friends thought it was bad and cheesy (some skate, some don't).

One of the coaches at my local rink asked her beginning students whether they wanted to become competitive figure skaters (after having viewed the Ice Princess). "No, because you can't eat", they replied. Just one of the many myths perpetrated by this movie.
When is Hollywood going to recognize that real life stories with accurate portrayals of skaters and events are ten times more interesting and will generate more box office receipts than this current nonsensical crap?

I saw Ice Princess this weekend. I can understand that people are a little upset because this isn't the most accurate movie when it comes to figure skating. However, as others have mentioned it's a Disney movie.
I went with my older sister and one of my students. Perhaps the best part of the whole experience was that we had a group of 8-10 year old girls sitting behind us who at either seen the movie or bought the soundtrack. As soon as the movie started the little girls broke out in song. Then throughout the movie, a little girl kept running down the aisle doing waltz jumps. She was probably 5 or 6. It was just an overall fun experience. :)

I plan to see the movie in spite of those people who object to its unrealistic portrayal of the real skating world. It is fantasy and made to entertain, not meant to be the true story! But think of other protrayals that the public take as fact - example for American audiences - ER denigrates Nurses and continues to ignore every attempt from the nursing community to allow imput to the real world of nursing, but the producers just aren't interested. Sadly, the public continues to use ER as the basis for judging the value of nurses.....the public thinks if ER says it, it must be true! Real documentaries don't have ma$$ appeal......
Saddest of all is more and more people don't have the thinking tools to separate fact from fantasy. But as someone else posted, if the youngsters enjoy the music, do jumps in the aisles, then perhaps they will one day enroll in Learn to Skate. I'd rather this fantasy igniting some interest than all the sex and violance our younsters are exposed to these days on TV and everyday life.

One big cliche but fun. Just like the Mighty Ducks movies about hockey which didn't have much reality in them either.
I saw this movie this weekend as part of a birthday party group. The girls, who were 8-9 years of age, were bored by the scenes with Casey and her mom and any scene that was only talking but who all loved the skating scenes.
I liked the part at the beginning with Casey and her mom watching figure skating on TV (sasha cohen). That happens in millions of households around the world.
What was really bugging me as a skater was the practice rink where there were steps from the stands down onto the ice. I couldn't stop thinking about how someone was going to run into that metal railing and impale themselves, let alone trying to zamboni around it.

There's no point in telling us lot to stop dreaming, lol! We all know it's impossible to land a triple anything in about a month. We all know what hard work and determination it takes to even leave the ice for the first time, never mind adding revolutions. It doesn't really matter if it's reality or not. It's a film. It's a plus that it's about skating, but at the end of the day, it's a film.

I find it ironic that there is a thread on this... And I'll tell you why.
First a couple of facts about me. I'm male, 21, and started skating when I was 11. I haven't skated much in the last ten years, and it usually takes something extraordinary to get me to skate, usually because of time constraints and previous obligations. I'm in the navy, but also currently in college. When I get the time to skate, I do.
What the heck does this have to do with Ice Princess? Here's the irony: that movie was that "extraordinary" push that got me back into skating daily. It reminded me of something I had forgotten. I'm still managing straight As this summer semester and also skating a couple hours a day. And since I'll be out of the navy around the time I turn 24, and I have a year before my sea tour and a year afterwards of a land tour, I've decided I'm going to start skating very seriously again. I'll need a job after I get out of the Navy, and even though I'll have a BA, I don't think I could use it to get even an iota of the joy I could get out of skating... and sharing it. I'd eventually like to coach. That's more of a goal than performance or competition for me. Clearly, my goals plan for and require years of practice.
Was the movie realistic? No. It wasn't supposed to be. But I approve of its message. It worked for me, an "older" (what a relative term, right?) guy. Who's to say it won't work for someone else? True, children attracted to the sport may soon find it not what they expected, but that's life in general. Either they find the heart or they don't. Or maybe like me, it might take a while for their heart to catch up to reality.
My first post, and my first two cents.

No, I don't think it is jealousy, I think they have some serious issues, among them ignorance. Ironically, this one gentleman I know plays adult intramural football and comes across as being totally macho. He just can't resist a dig at figure skating and males in particular. Another thing I have noticed is that guys put down male figure skaters also have a terrible time communicating with women, eventhough they may be married. They always talk is a condenscending way and have a definite attitude. I have absolutely no problems at all dealing with women, either socially or in the work environment.
We had a work function about three weeks ago. A couple of guys there were trying to impress the ladies (it was sickening). One of our clients came up and started chatting with me. She asked me what I was into, and I got around to figure skating. Well talk about an ice breaker. Turns out she is an adult figure skater as well. Well within about 5 minutes there were six ladies surrounding me and we were all talking figure skating. Boy did this cheeze a lot of the guys who were obviously smarting over the fact that their attitudes weren't scoring any points, especially when a couple of the ladies thaought it was pretty cool that I was a figure skater too.. And they still didn't get it because one of them walked by and muttered something about figure skating is a load of crap.

Another interesting observation on my part. I find guys who put down male figure skaters also have a hard time taking orders from women. I have seen three instances of this in my own experience.
I have had the same female coach for going on six years now. Great coach, great lady, and a great friend too. Turns out she is now my niece's coach as well, and the niece just adores her.

I get along with women better than men. Which can be a problem considering my current career field. My fellow male (and some female) naval personnel want to jocky for position and compete constantly. I just want to do my job. Things do not go well when this trivial competitiveness (as opposed to like, doing the best you personnally can to be promoted faster) interferes with my job. I tend to tell people in no uncertain terms to back off.
I don't look at figure skating as a competition against others; I look at is a competition against yourself. Unless you're pairs, dance, or synchro, then no one else is on the ice with you, and if you are one of those, you're still not competing against your partner or team. There is no one there to mess you up on the ice. It's all you.

Veering off topic.......
When I was in the Navy (1985-1992), I got along much better with the men than the women. Alot of the women were so catty, while most of the men were normal, nice people. In my field pretty much nobody went to sea, and it was a fairly small number of people - your reputation would follow you from base to base.

My best bud is in the navy, and haven't seen him in over a year now. But even when he was here, I could never get him to go into skating. My whole plan for a while was to get him really into it, and then we could do ice dance or pairs or something. Then he went out to boot camp, A school, and now California, so I haven't seen him. Although he claims when he gets time off and comes back to NY, I can take him kicking and screaming to the ice rink. :P
Sorry for the side track, but I think it's obvious that I miss him. And I can't get there because of school. Oh well. But I'm glad you found your way back into skating. And if you happen to run across my buddy, try to get him to go with you.

I loved it.
I'm a male figure skater, and I also loved this film. Sure, a lot of it wasn't even close to what real figure skating aspects are. Take for instance... the recital/test, the dimmed lights with spotlight in her final skate, the lyrics in her music she skated to at Regionals and Sectionals, etc. As people have said before... it is a Disney film, and it wasn't made to just document the exact nitty gritty of figure skating, but to appeal to a wide variety of audiences, figure skaters or not. As for the quick learning of jumps, here is what I think...
1. She had been skating as a hobby ever since a young child (note the alternate opening of the film).
2. She was a fast learner.
3. It wasn't really that short a time. When making movies, you have to close and group things in together to fit it all.
The skating was excellent, though. I loved watching the skating scenes in the film. Overall, I'd have to say I adore this movie. I never expected an accurate portrayal of figure skating, but it did come close while still attaining a fairytale aspect to it. Definitely one of my favourite films ever. I love it, everything about it, whether extremely accurate to figure skating or not, it's beautiful.

I didn't like the skating scenes in 'The Cutting Edge'. Ice Princess had great skating scenes. I loved her final skate. She executed so many beautiful moves, and although she fell (and took ages to get up) I still feel that her marks should have been higher that Nikki's (the Jumping Shrimp).
That would look wonderful. Do you skate in competitions, Raye?
I think I am the biggest competition junkie on this forum. Or pretty darn close to it.

Say in the Movie "Ice Princess" the name on the Skating Club is "Hartford Skating Cub". I cchecked the credits on the movie site and found nothing. But does anyone know if the Skating Club of Hartford and some of their skaters were actually used for a location and in the movie?

That's were I checked. I'm not sure what it would be under. BTW. for part 3. Does anyone know were it's going to start? Is it starting were 2 left off? With, if I remember correctly Jackie Dorsey making it big as a Pairs skater?
The movie was filmed in Toronto Canada at a local arena downtown...a lot of Canadian skaters subbed for the actresses..Jennifer Robinson, Lauren Wilson, Madeline Norris..Cassandra Von Bakel (sp?) to name a few...Kirsten Olsen one of the 'stars' is an actual figure skater in the U.S. from Minnesota, I believe she skated Junior last year.

This site has some information about the characters and plot of Cutting Edge 3. http://www.patinage-mag.com/Auditions-pour-Cutting-Edge-3,555
It starts in french, but most of the information is in English.
It appears Jackie Dorsey will be a coach, but since there is a "To Be Determined" by the character's name- they might not even use Jackie Dorsey as a character. I think it will only be loosely related to the previous movies.

What was the name of the Rink used in the movie? How was it they called it Hartford Skating Club in the movie? Do we have a relese Date for part three yet? Or does that need yet to be deturmed? BTW. what about Ice Princess? Any possibility of a 2 and 3?

I think you are mixing up two movies. "Hartford Skating Club" was the fictional club of the Disney movie "Ice Princess" - they called it that because they were using Hartford Connecticut as the location for the movie. I think they filmed the movie somewhere Canada (as movies are often filmed there because it is less expensive than California). I don't know if they used an actually rink or built one for the movie on a set.
You might enjoy this article: http://www.usfigureskating.org/Story.asp?id=29214&type=news There are 3 parts, and links to each part at the bottom.
So far Ice Princess only has 1, and they haven't said if they will make a 2.
Cutting Edge has a 1, a TV (and DVD/VHS) movie version 2, and they are going to start making a 3.

It wasn't Hartford, it was something like Harwick or Harwood.

You know- I think you're right, now that you've said this- I remember the movie better. I originally thought that it was named after the town, but now if I recall correctly, the club/rink was named after the "Skater Mom" (tina harwood?) who ran the club, she named the club after herself. (Or it was named in her honor?)
I'm betting, but do not know, that they built the rink for the movie- so it's not a real building.
The majority of ice princess was filmed at the Ricoh colisseum in Toronto

Disney's Ice PRincess? I suprisingly really did. Its one of my daughters few movies I dont mind watching over and over.
But I find that the same for similar movies. Cutting Edge, Save the Last Dance, Center Stage.. :)

The filming of the movie took place in Canada. The fictional location of the story was Connecticut.

LOL,all I can say is that if Kim Kampbell (I'm not sure if I got he last name right) should ever quit acting. I can surely see a future as a Skating coach for her. As she did a very convincing role of a coach. You couldn't even TELL she WAS acting!!!

i liked the concept of Ice Princess but from a skaters point of view, its tottaly unrealistic and pretty much impossible. i really wish they would make a good skating movie, like honestly there are no good one, like blades of glory, on egde, like make a good one that is realistic.

 Can you really try your Junior competitive freeskate test in the U.S. while skating in an ice show with your Snowplow Sam class - complete with spot lights and a group number???
There were some great moments in that movie - especially since I knew a lot of the actors. But - since when do skaters compete with programs like Zoey Bloc (Juliana Cannarozzo) and the skating shrimp (Kirsten Olsen).
Funny how the movie is based on a computer program that is based on physics to let the main charactor learn to do triples when she can barely skate.........and now there is the DARTFISH computer program that actually uses biomechanics (physics) to help coaches and skaters refine their technique so they can master the jumps!!!

I think my favourite bit of skating in a film was in Ronin with Robert DiNero. Katerina Witt had a cameo role as a show skater, ironically with her own show and she was shot by a sniper while mid show. It was a ganster typw thing. A confusing movie but great none the less!!
