View Full Version : AP McDonoughh vs Kimmi Meissner: Who's more talented?
I thought the most striking similarity of these 2 was that both of them made a name for themselves by beating Jennifer Kirk who has always been a consistent performer in nationals. Personally, I prefer AP's "Madam Butterfly" over Kimmi's peformance in nationals this year. And AP's jumps are technically better than Kimmi's. Which one of these 2 do you think is more talented do you think?

It's Kimmie, with an "e", short for Kimberly. Meanwhile, your poll is like asking "who is better, Michelle Kwan or Nancy Kerrigan". AP doesn't compete anymore, so it's sort of difficult to rate someone who was on their way out with someone who is on her way in. Either way though, Kimmie's got better technique, and while she has no emotion or expression at all, she at least looks like she wants to be out there, unlike AP. I don't see what part of AP's technique you could possibly see as superior to Kimmie. First, Kimmie doesn't spend half her time falling, two Kimmie doesn't flutz, has a correct leg position in a layback, nice lines, nice depth of knee, good check in landing position....AP didn't have any of those things any of the times I saw her. And that look of desperation about not wanting to be on the ice on her face, made it unbearable for me to watch her skate, either way. And while Kimmie's was cheated and shouldn't have been ratified, I've never seen AP try for a triple axel, either.

I hadn't heard AP wasn't competing. Why not? (Did she finally tell her mother to lay off?) Whatever, it's all really too bad--minus the errors, AP was lovely to watch. You're right...she just needed some heart, and if that's not there, well, that's the ballgame.

I have watched Kimmie perform over the past couple of years and I really like her skating... a lot.
If she can just get through her up and coming growth spurt with all her jumps and moves intact, she will be a definite force to recon with in the future ladies scene.

While I agree that Kimmie has far better jumping technique, if you have any old tapes of AP's skating you might want to check them out; AP didn't flutz.

Flippet- AP is now attending college, so I guess she either moved out or told her mother off, and I for one am glad because she always looked so unhappy. Meanwhile, I could have sworn AP flutzed, but I may very well be wrong because so many ladies do that it's hard to keep 'em straight.

AP did NOT flutz, not at all, not even close that I ever saw. Her layback was gorgeous, leg position great. She was wonderful spinner, great technique. She had soft knees and sharp true edges, good pure skating technique, could crank up to blinding speed. Her flow across the ice was absolutely exquisite. She did have some some problems with fully rotating the tripples at times. Other times, she didn't seem to really 'want it,' but she was beautiful to watch, exceptional. She had as much pure talent as I've even seen in one skater. I'm really sorry she quit, but if she didn't want to skate, it's probably for the best.

Well that is such a pity that AP is not going to be skating any more but I guess she can always give it a go later. I have to say that looking at kimmie back in the junior world I was kind of surprised by how much she had out done her friend katy talor.
It was gutsy of her to do the 3 axle and even though the landing wasn't so great at least she tried it. I think that looking at her body and her skating that she should do well in the future.

AP never looked like she enjoyed it to me.

Kimmie! I admire the young ladies of the sport that keep pushing the and upping the tecnical ante. Sasha with her quads and 3/3's, Kimmie with her 3axel. Who could ask for anything more? With the duo of Sasha and Kimmie at the Olympics next year, our girls will be unstoppable.
What will be rewarded higher with CoP though? A quad and a 3/3? Or a 3axel? :?:

Neither...they'll be downgraded to what they really are- over half a turn cheated on all accounts. Nice spins, clean jumps, good footwork, and inventive choreography will win under CoP, so the quads and 3/3 won't be worth trying anymore. Thank God, we could use a few less injuries. I mean you love Sasha, and you keep saying "GO FOR THE 3/3 and the QUAD!!" you don't skate- do you? Sasha has a re-occuring, permanent back injury. If you want her to win, trying 3/3's and quads is the LAST thing she should be doing, all she's going to do is injure herself further and put herself out of the skating world altogether (like Tara did with the 3loop/3loop, which is pretty much the only reason she won the Olympics). Remember the year Sasha had to skip Nationals because of trying the 3/3's and hurting her back? Yeah. Think a little.
