Yegads! I never, ever go on the ice without skates, but I know that many coaches do it all the time. When judging recently, I had the choice of walking across the rink or climbing over the wall into a hockey box. I climbed.

I heard he fell because he was wearing skates, but forgot to take the guards off. That could be a rumor though.

What I heard is that he was wearing guards, which he normally doesn't do.
