I. To be a figure skater, you must be an incredible athlete:
1. Have some sports scientists on a "fluff" piece explaining which is harder, running the mile and ____, _____, _____or a figure skating LP. They explained some stuff about the quad, but it was by itself...make comparisons.
2. Have sports personalities argue about which is harder.
II. Skating is beautiful. Period.
Everyone I've ever talked to who did not know much about skating said that they thought it was incredibly beautiful. Of course it is, because it FLOWS, like a river or a stream or a great ship at sail!
Therefore, target folks who appreciate beauty and put down folks who do not. They should be proud of it...like "FIgure Skating is the Artist of All Sports" "People who like the finer things in life love figure skating" (backdrop, a fabulous meal, great ambiance, a Lexis, the opera, the Mona LIsa); "Like mudwrestling? You wouldn't like Figure Skating. Its too pretty for you."
a. Stop the evil commentary that is biased for any skater...find ways to praise all the skaters, and only just explain why someone won on that particular day. Most people do not like that.
III. Make skating more accessible...every rink should have a jumping harness and let people on it for an extra fee.
Iv. Rinks should have free days as often as they can, where the kids only pay for skate rental, and all the local orgs should know about it.
v. Stop with the longevity thing. Skaters do the same elements...once you start to "see" those elements, you get bored unless you see the quality involved, and that is not easy, once you've done that, you are no longer a casual fan...stop oversaturating an audience with the same skaters.
