"PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Michael Rubin has a philosophy about exercise: If it's not fun, he won't do it. That's why the 50-year-old assistant attorney general won't be taking the stairs to his office — "They're boring." But he can be seen taking a spin at the downtown ice skating rink during his lunch break. "

.....

"According to Dr. Angela Smith, an orthopedic surgeon at the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, ice skating has less impact on joints than other aerobic activities like running, and it improves balance and increases endurance.

"It's also one of those sports you can do for a lifetime. It does not require a partner or a team, but can be as social as you want it to be," said Smith, an avid skater herself.

The exercise also is good for the waistline. The American College of Sports Medicine says that on average, for every hour of continuous skating, a 150-pound person burns about 600 calories. That's about the same as running five miles in an hour. "

Of course it is all true!!!! I can't run because my knees can't handle it but I can certainly skate. :)

Thanks for the article!

I wonder how many calories a 2:40 Gold program would burn?

About one chocolate milkshake's worth, I hope. At least, that's how I reward myself when I have a good run-through on my gold free program. There's a Steak and Shake right by the rink ....

As an adult who just began four months ago, I'm delighted to hear the caloric benefits -- I thought I was getting a good workout so it's nice to see it confirmed. The only problem with skating I've found, as opposed to other exercises, is the likelihood of falling down. At least for me! I am nursing a hurt bicep (I think) from when I hit a nub in the ice and went flying onto my shoulder a few days ago. I'm hoping more expertise will lead to less pain, because other than that I love skating and am so glad a rink finally opened in town and I could learn.

That's so true. There are more adult competitions in my area than before.

I would love to know that too! I am just dying at the end of mine.

I have a heart rate monitor that I wear when I run sometimes. I'm going to wear it to practice just to see how high my heart rate gets at the end of that 2:40. It will probably scare the hell out of me!

Patty, I did just that doing the perimeter stroking pattern from PPM going full bore for 3 minutes...I hit 128, and you know how old I am.

My resting heart rate is 56. My heart system is obviously okay, it's just everything else is falling apart.......

This is the one complaint my wife has about my skating. Before I started, I could fit into a 32 X 32 pair of pants...Not anymore. my thighs are so large that my wife has to buy size 34 or 36 waist pants which will fit my thighs and alter them down to my 31 inch waist. So I had to get all new dress pants.

At 41 years of age I'll take my larger, but much firmer, butt and legs over thin flabby ones any day! Skating has done wonders to help me fight the effects of gravity on my backside. I highly recommend it and it's a lot more fun than aerobics class.

Wow! You are in good shape! I expect mine will get up anywhere between 180 and 200 by the end of my program. Even though I run a lot, mine tends to run high. I will try to do it this weekend and report back.

You are sooooo right there! I actually got a compliment on my "firm butt" from the girl who does my hair (we were talking about the benefits of skating as exercise vs. other forms of exercise). Too bad the front side of me doesn't match  (although I am determined it will some day :) ).

Oh this is too funny... I got a compliment on my tight little butt from the denist LADY too. She wanted to know how I did it! She said," If skating does "that" to your fanny maybe I should take up skating!"
