I guess the World Champ is now the number 1 ranked ladies figure skater according to the ISU site.

Yikes Michelle is down to 18th.

The ISU rankings are meaningless.

I wouldn't call them completely meaningless - they do show who has been skating a lot over the past few seasons. Obviously, those skaters who have decided not to do the Grand Prix are much lower in the rankings.
I see the ISU rankings as the ISU's list of favorites - if you're at/near the top, they'll do just about anything to suck the skating life out of you!

Meaningless?
To whom? Does the USA now comprise the entire world?
Hmmm.

I agree that "meaningless" may be construed as a narrow-minded view. But I do thing the formula is slightly flawed. Especially when looked at mid-season. Also the rankings have limited utility other than for interest (or debate!). Once upon a time they were considering using the ranking system as a replacement for the Q rounds at Worlds. If they had gone that route, it certainly would be more "meaningful."
Hey, I just spotted this new emoticon. Cool! (Not that I'm surrendering here. I just wanted to use it.)

Well, looks like we effectively agree.
I think the ISU should either do away with the GP Finals or with Worlds...becasue those being so close together is what kills the skaters! I don't think 4 competitions (2 mandatory GP events, plus nationals and worlds) is too much for any of them to handle if healthy.
I was thinking they could lose the GP finals and give money instead, but your idea is better...let the GP be the qualifying round for Worlds for SEEDED Skaters only, so that the Nationals competitions are not rendered dull...and so that an up and comer with great talent can still take it all. That would certainly be an incentive for seeded skaters to participate in the GP Series!

The Grand Prix Finals are in December now, and worlds in March. That's hardly close together.
