The fall edition, available in Zellers stores now, free.

There's a big picture of her on the cover (taken before her haircut), and a 1-page article and another full-page picture inside. Nothing earth-shattering in the article, nor anything that most B&K followers don't already know, but nice nonetheless.

I saw it too! I was like "Hey there's Shae-Lynn! I wonder what it's for?" The weirdest thing was that there didn't seem to be any point to it... :?

I'm just guessing, but I think "the point" is just to get people to pick up the magazine. I remember Ann Murray was on the cover of a previous edition, and that had nothing to do with Zellers either.

Well, when you do pick it up, if they scan it through the register, you get 500 bonus HBC points. The store I was at, I only saw about 3 copies of it.

The reason Shae is on the Zellers mag cover is that Zellers is now a sponsor of Shae and Vic.

Other skaters who have sponsors are Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe. Goodlife Fitness Centres is their sponsor.

Elvis Stojko had a host of sponsors including Canon, McDonalds, MasterCard and more.

Elite eligible skaters need sponsors because even though they sometimes may win some money at competitions, they can't touch much of the money until they are pros. And flying all over the world to compete, hotels, coaches, ice time, skates and so on costs mega bucks.

I'm not an elite skater but just an adult skater who competes and I'm running a big skating debt. This years fall and winter ice time alone is near $1000 not including my coaches fees, transportation, competition fees hotels and stuff. Then if you add another $500 for spring skating, that's $1500. If I would have skated this summer for 6 weeks I would have had to play another $450. And that would have cost me altogether almost $2000 for ice time alone.

Elite ice is about 5 to 6 times more expensive than what I skate on. Elite skaters pay about $10000 to $16000 for ice time alone. Plus the higher level you are the higher level coach you need which means you have to pay a much higher rate. Some elite coaches ask anywhere from $15 dollars for $15 minutes = $60 an hour to $25 for 15 minutes =$100 an hour. It racks up big time.

So there is the reason for elite skaters needing sponsorship.

Not true. SS, you need to reread the Skater Trust Guidelines policy again (Rulebook - Policies and Procedures, p 83 - 87). Skaters can get at any of the money in their trust funds by requesting withdrawal of the funds -- including competition winnings or directed donations. Appearance/performance fees of $2500 or less go directly to the skater without going through the Trust. Any money the skater earns from coaching or dance partnering goes directly to the skater; sponsorship funds go through the Trust account. If a skater is earning money solely from coaching/partnering and has some appearances worth under $2500 each, they don't even need a trust account -- just sanctions for their appearances (which *should* be paid for by the 'host' of the event, not the skater).

Skaters can withdraw funds from their Trust accounts to pay for vehicles, housing, ice, lessons, skates, gym memberships, living allowances (food) -- just about anything you can think of is eligible. There may well also be occasions where the SC sanction for appearance/performance (eg. SOI/COI tours) sees the funds go directly to the skaters withOUT going through SC, but that would be individual agreements put in place for specific skaters (IF it does happen this way -- don't know for sure).

Trust accounts are closed upon the ineligibility of the skater, cessation of SC membership, or at the request of the skater.

That's not all true. At at least one of the training centers I've been at, I know the elites got free ice time in exchange for skating in a certain number of shows per year. I know of at least two other major rinks that do that, too. Also, when skaters are chosen for internationals, the USFSA pays for airfare, hotel, and I think food for the skater/team and one coach. Skaters only have to pay for bringing family or a choreographer or second coach or something. I think most federations have similar arrangements.

So where's Victor then?????????????

Personally I think it has more to do with Zellers putting well known Canadian women on the cover of their magazine. This issue is also the Back to School issue and I'm sure they know that Shae would be popular with young girls going back to school.

to answer VGL:

No Viktor -- is komspiracy to keep away from any and all fans!!:P

Just joking. I think you probably have it right, VGL, although maybe Shae is beginning to put out feelers for a job for when she retires from skating.

til later,

Well Roots was a sponsor of B&K last year and only Shae appeared in the billboards, in-store posters, etc.

What's with all these sponsors of B&K's all of the sudden. For years they only had SunLife (three years) and last year they had Samsung, Roots, MT, etc.

I don't believe Roots was a sponsor of Shae and Victor last season. Shae was used in the promotion of their Olympic team merchandise and it is my understanding that she was basically paid in Roots clothing for doing that.

Sponsors last season were Samsung and a law firm. The reason that they had more sponsors last year - it was an Olympic year meaning more exposure for the sponsors.

Why would Roots pay her in Roots gear when she gets that anyway with being an Olympian?

Anyway, MT is sponsoring B&K again this year so it's not all about the Olympic year.

The Roots clothing would have been the regular stuff they carry.
