What do u people think are the most dissapointing things to happen to a fav skater or team, that you really give ur heart out to them?

Since you didn't specify years or anything, I'm going to show my age.

My top two are:

Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner having to withdraw from the Olympics due to injury.

Christopher Bowman not fufilling the enormous potential he had to to one of the great male skaters.

I would say Tai and Randy as well....that was extremely sad at the time.

Brian Orser in 1988 at the Olympics.

Hough and Ladret when she wacked her head after a twist lift at Canadians. Also never making the podium at Worlds..they were definitely talented enough for it.

Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini at the 1984 Olympics (short program).

Wilson and McCall at the 1988 Olympics..even though they skated brilliantly.

Bourne and Kraatz being thisclose to the bronze in 2002 and missing because of a stupid once in a lifetime slip in the free dance.

*edit*

I don't think I'm liking the fact all my sad moments or 98% of them are from Canadian skaters ;-)

I was going to say the same thing, reading your post, NGC.

I would add, 1988--Debi Thomas falling apart at the Olympics.
1994--The "Pros" not living up to the potential in Men's singles at the O's. Especially for Kurt.

Paul Binnebose's injury - anyone have an update on him? (Did I spell his name right?)

1988- Brian Orser not winning the olympics

Josee Chouinard never making the world podium

Kurt not making it to the Olympic podium

Michelle Kwan not winning the 1998 and 2002 Olympics

The death of Grinkov or any close family member. My heart ached for Gordeeva. I felt the loss of John Curry & Rob McCall, Robert Wagenhoffer & others. Death or near death (Paul Binnebose) are the worst.

that Tonia K didn't get to go to the Olympics in '98. And that she wasn't on the World podium that same year.

I'm disappointed in what pro skating has become. Is it a lack of direction -- I cannot stand the skating exhibition/concert/circus sideshow format. Overexposure? Lack of big names? Repetitiveness?

I guess you could also throw skating specials in with the disappointing lack of direction. I dislike the skating stars "tribute to easy listening performers" format -- I'm too young to appreciate a tribute to Burt Bacharach. But I'm too old to enjoy a Michelle Kwan "Ice Princess" cheesefest. But I hate fake contests where you already know who will be getting the 10s. I think the duality of skating -- sport or art? -- also plagues how to market it -- exhibition or competition.

I was heartbroken when Angela didn't get sent to Olympics in '02. But if they sent Angela, Sarah wouldn't be our OGM.
I am disappointed every time Sasha falls in her LP's and doesn't win. I just want her to skate that clean LP and show the world what she can do!
I cried when Plushy fell in the SP. I wanted one of the most exciting showdowns in Olympic history. Instead he was a long shot, like Hughes, but Yagudin was too good.

I never get upset about these kinds of things...when Angela did not go to the Olympics, I was sure I'd see her skate again.

I get upset and become very emotional when someone is driven out of skating so that I can never see them again, like Pasha Grishuk. I loved to see her skating. She has the best edging I've ever seen.

I still get upset when I think the judges are corrupt, like in the ladies SP at the Olympics 2002...Irina should have won that SP hands down but mostly, I just don't care anymore because I focus on enjoying everyone's skating!

I think the judges made it up to her by giving her those 4 first place ordinals in the LP and making her one ordinal away from being the Olympic Champion. :D

I agree. There was no way Irina should have had any 1st place ordinals for the LP at SLC. That was the judges really cheating.
I guess I didn't feel sorry for Irina at SLC at the SP because just a month prior she was given a huge gift at the GPF. The judges really cheated for her. Sarah Hughes probably should've won the GPF, with Michelle in 2nd followed by Irina in 3rd. I always thought it was the judges way of correcting a huge mistake. Besides, many feel Irina would've won the Olympics had she been in 1st after the SP. I disagree. She completely choked in the LP being in 2nd after the SP. She would've felt tremendous pressure if she was going in as the leader. Who knows though? Maybe Sasha would've had the OGM if Irina was in 1st after SP? Irina choked, Michelle choked, Sasha choked, yet Sarah kept it together because she didn't think she stood a chance.

I guess you could look at it that way, but the judges really gave it to Michelle on presentation (5.9s across)
Irina's technical was phenomenal but not good enough to out do Michelle's awesome artistic marks.

Scott Hamilton and his health, has to be the most heartbreaking of them all. Also, Tai and Randi at the Olympics, Caryn Kadavy falling ill and having to withdraw. Elvis Stojko and Nancy Kerrigan not winning the Olympics. :frus:

Elvis not winning gold. The horrible backlash on the internet boards when Tara and Sarah beat Michelle fair and square. Tonya screwing up a brilliant career.

The Olympics...she wasn't the best on the night..but perhaps they should have given the gold to her... (no disrespect to Sarah - for she was just perfect in the LP!!!)
Maybe that is why they seem to be (not always) awarding better marks then she deserves.

But since she is not my favorite ...I would have to say that for me it was the WCs where my favorite Urmanov (and yes in 1994 Olympics he won the gold just like Sarah - and perhaps he shouldn't have) was leading after the short (and by some way too) and had to pull out due to injuries....

ok ok ok, I know that this has been driven into the ground repeatedly, but although "corrected" I really think that the the greatest disappointment was when Sale and Pelletier didn't get to have that moment in the Kiss and Cry where their marks matched how great a program that was for them. Their program really had me emotional and I think it would have been such a beautiful moment if they had been given incredible marks. I would have loved to see their ecstatic reactions.

I'm was also disappointed both times michelle took the ice in her long programs at the Olympics. When she has that timid, withdrawn look to her, you just know it's not going to be that magical moment so many of us are waiting for.

- Sergei Grinkov's death

- Brian Boitano's 1994 Olympic short program

- So many things that happened to Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. The attack, the joy of her brilliant Olympic performances being so short-lived. (I do feel she was the rightful champion, and that the book Inside Edge explains why extremely well.) Maybe worst of all is how many people bashed her after the Olympics, often because they were sick of hearing about her as opposed to anything she said, and often because she was not Little Miss Sunshine like they wanted her to be. No matter what people said, she's a great skater and a great person. Period.

- Paul Wylie never winning US Nationals. (But, this made Lillehammer all the sweeter.)

- Todd Eldredge never winning an Olympic medal, and losing the gold at 1998 Worlds.

- Oksana Baiul's personal struggles, and the loss of some very magical skating that might have been.

- The injuries that kept Alexander Abt and Takeshi Honda out of many competitions.

- The rotten way network TV has treated skating fans: chacking performances, delaying broadcasts with football, NCAA, etc., scheduling two skating programs in the same time slot, giving us fluff pieces on local cuisine and culture instead of another performance or two.

- On a lighter note, Brian Joubert's molasses costume for his Grand Prix LP last fall. :-p ANYONE'S bad costumes!

Elvis sucks. He sure didn't deserve the gold! I'm amazed he even won the silver twice at the olympics, I don't think he deserved that either. The other skaters just totally surpass him, especially in the artistic department and certainly in the looks department. The judges must just feel sorry for Canada since they choke so much in Olympic competition, they feel they have to give them something.

Im sorry I just have to ask... If Canada has such horrible skaters can you explain:
Jeff Buttle's Silver
Sale and Peltier
Kurt Browning
Brian Orser
Jose Chouinard
Bourne and Kratz
Toller Cranston
Underhill and Martini
Barbara Ann Scott
Brasseur and Eisler
Elizabeth Manley
Petra Burka
or if you are looking for something more up and coming there is
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir
Jessica Dube and Bryce Davidson

Obviously Im only naming a few here but if you want some more. My point only being that you can't say that there are no good canadian skaters and that the judges would feel sorry for Canada. Elvis was a great skater and he set world records in the sport, he wasnt perhaps doing so well later in his career but he definitly wasnt a fake.
