Hi All,
I'd like to post this in the news forum, but it probably has to wait until after Cup of Russia has been aired (incidentally, could anyone tell me when that's happening?) because of spoilers.
I got the idea of collecting messages for Dorota Zagorska & Mariusz Siudek from their Skatingforums fans and well-wishers, and forwarding them to the pair.
Why?
As you probably know, Dorota Zagorska & Mariusz Siudek withdrew from Cup of Russia before the long program. The cause was the shoulder injury which Dorota sustained as a result of a very hard fall (on the throw triple loop) in the short program. Unfortunately, the injury seems to be a serious one. I don't know the medical term in English, but the initial diagnosis is "shoulder joint/ acetabulum fracture," which may take up to a month to heal and might even require a surgery.
There is an article in today's "Dziennik Polski" (one of Polish dailies). For anyone interested, it's available at http://dzis.dziennik.krakow.pl/?2004/11.30/Sport/a01/a01.html -- in Polish, of course. I'm too busy at the moment to translate it in full, but if anyone would like a full translation, please let me know, and I'll do what I can. Here are some main points from this piece and another article from a sports daily:
Cup of Russia was Dorota & Mariusz' last event, and they had a very good chance of advancing to the Grand Prix Final. Despite the pain, Dorota wanted to complete their program and to skate in the final part of the competition the following day. Mariusz described how they stayed up all night, applying ice to Dorota's shoulder (the pain was that bad). They really wanted to skate the long program. The calculations showed that even a 4th place finish would advance them to the Final, and that they could achieve this placement by doing double jumps instead of triples and leaving out one throw jump. The decision whether to skate or not was to be undertaken just before the long program. But during the practice, it turned out that doing lifts was out of the question - the pain was too great despite an injection. Coach Richard Gauthier said no, you can't skate because we don't know what the consequences would be. Dorota & Mariusz withdrew. Mariusz said that, although they would not qualify for the Grand Prix Final, it was a the right decision, as the injury could have been aggrevated had they skated the long program.
The plan had been to go back to Montreal and train hard for the Grand Prix Final, but it had to be altered. Dorota & Mariusz few to Poland on Sunday, and have been seeing doctors, having tests done all day Monday. One of the doctors has recommended surgery. Opinions as to how long it will take for the shoulder to heal vary from two weeks to a month. On Wednesday Dorota will see their doctor in Katowice.
Such is the sad news...
If there is interest, I will update this thread with info from the Polish media as it becomes available. :) In the mean time, I'd like to ask Dorota & Mariusz' fans and all well-wishers for messages for them. :) Feel free to either post them in this thread, send them in private messages to me or PM me for my email address.
Thank you,
