Anyone know if Joannie and Cynthia are friends (or friendly)?
It would be great for them to go to the GPF as friends and get to enjoy this experience together. How exciting for them, for Canadians and fans of rockin' Canuck female skaters!!
I just checked the ISU to see the standings so far for the Grand Prix events results...

2 Joannie ROCHETTE---CAN 7+12=19
3 Miki ANDO-----------JPN 9+5=14

I'm so happy for Joannie! From the reports it sounds like she had a nearly flawless skate. I've been following her since her victory at Junior Nationals but it was seeing her live during the exhibition at the 2002 Nationals where she won the Bronze that I became a fan (I found her program more exciting and enchanting than either Bellemare or Robinson's).
And two Canadian ladies at GPF? Bizarre, but great. "The kids have arrived" as Rod Black would say.  I just hope they enjoy themselves and don't worry too much about placements though I think they have just as good a chance to get on the podium as any.
There's only one GP left. Who's attending that event that still has a chance to make the Final? I know there is Slutskya and Arakawa, but is there anyone else?

Except, of course, for Irina! :halo:

Carolina Kostner and Elena Sokolova. So anything can happen. I'm guessing that these two will bump Nikidinov and Volchkova out of their trip to the GPF.
Edited to add: I assume Arakawa and Slutskaya will be on the podium, which will give each of them a place in the GPF. If Kostner takes the bronze, her GPF spot is secured. If she takes fourth place, she will be in a tie for the 6th spot at the GPF.
If Sokolova takes the bronze, she will be in a four-way tie for a spot at the GPF. Which would leave Kostner in fourth, also with 14 points, the same as Miki Ando and Yoshie Onda.
So Rochette, Phaneuf, Arakawa and Slutskaya will go, then three or four others in a tie for the last two spots. I don't know how it's decided if four of them have 14 points, and only two spots are open.
I think it's partly who had the highest placement so far, which would not favour Sokalova, as the other ladies each have a silver. And I assume that because Ando beat Onda at NHK, that she has the edge to go to the GPF.
If others know exactly how it all works, please share! :)

All I know is that getting to watch Joannie, Irina, and perhaps Carolina, I won't be missing the US Skaters, bugger them, there is plenty of good exciting skating outside the US. Of course the US Men have been very strong with probably Weir, Goebel, and Jahnke (perhaps) making the final.
Where's a "fainting" smilie on this board when you need one? I never would have predicted anyone would be able to post a comment like that with a straight face just one year ago! :P And who would have ever predicted not just one, but two Canadian ladies would qualify for the GPF just a year ago?
Congratulations to Joannie on her latest victory and congratulations to both her and Cynthia on making the GPF!  I can't wait to see the two of them compete head-to-head there and at Canadians! :D

There's a few photos of the two of them together on Joannie's official site, and people have seen them hanging out together off the ice at various events, so it does sound like they're pretty good friends. :) I hope they'll always be able to stay that way off the ice, no matter how fierce their rivarly on the ice may become! :D
