Congratulations, Cynthia! If anyone had told me a year ago that a Canadian woman would win two medals - one of them gold - and qualify for the GPF this year, I would have said they were crazy.
Also, congratulations to Mira Leung for her impressive-sounding GP debut...not that we got to see much of it on the CTV broadcast. From what little we did get to see, it looks like the main reason why Mira didn't place higher is because she's still cheating quite a few of her jump landings...and from what we saw last year from Jennifer Robinson, that could really hurt her under CoP.
I was also really impressed with Susanna's LP, which was probably the best-choreographed program in the event. I'm sorry Fumie had such a rough skate, but I really liked her LP choreography, too. It's sooo refreshing to see a Carmen program not filled with overused music--the only cut I recognized was the part Michelle Kwan used for her 1998/99 SP, and Michelle's the only other skater I know who's ever used that particular piece of music. I'm also glad Lori Nichol's still choreographing somewhere; she doesn't seem to be as busy over the past few years and I've missed seeing her work.
 and congratulations to Cynthia, the first Canadian ladies' Skate Canada champion in 14 years! BTW, that "Elvis Stojko with a bun" remark was probably the funniest description of a skater I've heard in a very long time!

If I could do cartwheels, I would! I'm THAT estactic over Phaneuf's victory. Great job! Even with her two falls I thought she had the skate of the night (though I admit to extreme national bias) I wish I could have seen Hawker or Leung since it seems that had fairly good skates themselves.
Some random comments:
I wish Onda would have picked peppier music. She's a sweetie but slow music doesn't seem to suit her on-ice personality and gets rather dull when she's not jumping. But I was very happy to see her do well again after she seemed to struggle last season.
I adored Suguri's LP. When I saw "Carmen" on the screen I groaned, but then was thrilled to hear it was a different cut. That's what I don't get about skaters using the same music. OK, everyone wants to pick music they like from popular operas, I get that. But operas and symphonies are at least an hour long! Surely there is no need for everyone to use the same 3 minutes of the piece??
Poykio is a very classy skater but she seemed to lose her flow by the end, but that's probably just me. Overall I enjoyed her program. I like seeing such good skaters coming from countries not traditionally thought of as skating powers.
But still, nothing beats Phaneuf for me tonight. What a great result for a Canadian lady. And to think that Rochette's season has yet to begin! I am DEFINATELY looking forward to Nationals this year! :)

Agree with all these posts, how nice to see a young canadian women's skater actually get to the podium, it has been a long time. Having said this, we Canadians, lets not kid ourselves. There wasn't a single U.S women here at Skate Canada (something that I find really bizarre given the proximity) and the field was incredibily weak. If the U.S had sent two or three of their top skaters, the result would likely have been much more sobering.

 You're probably right. Now my excited "high" is gone. Oh well. Phaneuf gets to go to the GPF and test herself against the top skaters. I'm still looking forward to Nationals. It's my favourite competition of the year anyways.
But I still think Rochette can potentially compete against the likes of Cohen and Arakawa and get respectable results if she skates clean. She's great.

No offence to Jennifer Robinson, but she did not have that kind of success even in a ‘weak field’. CP has shown that she is a competitor, which is something that Canadian women have sorely lacked. As Tracy Wilson said “she is Elvis Stojko with a bun”.
American girls were at SA and Phaunef still finished second.

Now that I think of it, Phaneuf has beaten the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th ranked skaters in the world (and she has beaten Rochette who wound up 8th) so I still have the "OK" to be excited. ;) Sure, Ando and Suguri etc weren't at their bests, but neither was Phaneuf. I'm going to wait until I see how she fares at the GPF before making predictions of any kind--dire or hopeful.
And I'm still excited when any skater goes clean and/or has a personal best performance, no matter the results. Even with the short clips shown on TV, Hawker and Leung seemed quite happy with themselves and the crowd seemed pretty happy too. So cudos to them. Maybe Leung will be able to improve and become a contender. Maybe she won't. I don't care. She's fun to watch and her consistent jumps will force Phaneuf and Rochette to be consistent themselves at Nationals.
I remember that one nationals (can't remember the year but it was between the reigns of Chouinard and Robinson) when one CDN lady won the title with 2 or 3 triples . I knew nothing at all about the sport at the time, but even then I knew something was wrong with that picture. I'd say things are looking much better. 8-)
I do think, however, that it's important Phaneuf start making landing 6 or all 7 triples a goal if she wishes to be competitive at the World Championships.
Fruit Loops, I beleive it was either the 1995 or 1997 Nationals. I remember 1995 being particulary hard to watch.
I beleive she had a goal of 5 triples because she's still adjusting to her growth spurt. I'm sure by the time Worlds rolls around she'll be in fine form.
Wouldn't it be exciting if Joannie also made the GPF?

I'm actually wondering if she won with 1 or 2 triples... I remember the TV host saying how much we were going to miss Josée Chouinard, even with all her falls... and he was so right.
As for Phaneuf, I'm just happy to see that she can do well under pressure. Sure she isn't exactly at Sasha's level, but I so don't care right now. I'm happy with what she just did. I'm not asking her to be a world medalist next March, I'm just happy to see that she is competitive against the top 10 skaters in the world and I enjoy watching her skate. I'm not asking for more right now!

Painful is the word. It was painful to watch.

Yes, it would. :) Rochette is one of my favourite Canadian skaters (along with Buttle) 8-) I think she has the potential to pull it off, too.
