This is really scary. I pray that she will be ok. I certainly hope they do not show any of this when it airs. I can't imagine how disturbing that must have been to see.

I cannot believe the nerve....

....of the USFSA to allow for a picture like that on their site.
A truly humiliating and scary experience and look what they show.

Apparently there were reports that other pairs had problems in the area where he caught his foot in the ice.
I feel so bad for them. Maxim must feel obsolutely horrible. I don't blame him in the least but wouldn't be suprised if he felt guilt at all.

Those pics are scary. I feel for anyone who saw it happen live.
Best wishes to Tatiana and Maxim. I hope everything is alright.

My husband told me he heard this morning that she has a concussion. Apparently she was unconscious for about five minutes. I knew nothing about it until he told me. I think he heard it on the radio in the car. There was nothing about it in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this morning though.

Well, as you all know if you watched the SA coverage today on ABC, they showed the fall.

ABC showed the fall (in regular and slow-motion) at the end of their Skate America coverage, and I can honestly say that's the scariest-looking fall I've ever seen in skating! I can't imagine how hard it must have been for the people who saw it live...especially the ones sitting right in front of T&M when the fall happened! 8O I think I saw at least one woman burst into tears...and I can't really blame her. :(
I'm so relieved to hear Tatiana will be okay.
I don't see anything wrong with the picture. Figure skating is dangerous, and pairs is the most dangerous of the figure skating disciplines. I don't think the picture is humiliating or humbling, but just quite frank.
At the PSA conference in San Diego in May, almost the first point made at the pairs on-ice presentation, was that the primary job of the guy is to keep the girl from hitting the ice, which simply goes to show how aware skaters and coaches are of the dangers. I'm sure Maxim is beside himself and wishing he were the injured one in this awful accident.

I, too, don't find anything wrong with showing the footage of the fall. It is a sport, and fans want to know and see what happened.
On ABC's World News Tonight Sunday, they just showed a clip of the fall. The news anchor said that Totmianina does not remember anything about the fall.
Get better, Tatiana!!!

I couldn't believe that fall... I kept yelling at the tv not to move her, it was that scary looking of a fall. Not something I would wish on any pairs team, no matter what.
I think it especially scared me as I've dealt with more injuries in the last month than I previously have in two years total - broken wrist, blood gushing everywhere several times, etc. Something in the ice, aieee.

and they make it sound as though he failed to "save" her
Looking at the footage today, the way they fell, there was really nothing he could do...and it appeared to me that he actually tried to get further under her as he fell, but it was just impossible. I'm amazed she's even close to okay--how terrifying.

I have been around the skating world for 23 years and that is the worst fall I have ever seen. I with her well and back on her feet soon.

I am so glad to hear that she is OK. I just saw the clip on the news. That was a horrible fall and she is one lucky young lady to receive just a minor injury from it. I love to watch Pairs, but it is scarey and very dangerous.

Holy cow, that looked nasty. Thank heavens it didn't turn out much worse.
Here's something spooky...
A few days ago, my wife and I were having dinner when the conversation turned to skating and she mentioned that she had this awful feeling that she was going to see a pairs team get into some kind of accident. I sort of shrugged it off and we left it at that. (If she ever has a vision of the winning lottery numbers, though...)
But this does lead me to wonder, are pairs skaters trained in how to handle such incidents? I mean, would Maxim have been trained to let her fall hoping she would stand a better chance of landing cleaner than if he "broke" her fall? (I hope that made sense)

What a horrifying fall, I hope the team makes it through alright.
To answer your question Peter, any good pair coach teaches their students that the most important thing is to protect eachother. The gentleman's main concern is the safety of his partner. Pairs don't necessarily "train" to fall but it happens and they learn what to do as you are going, sort of! In my experience though, the team is warned of common "falling out" mistakes and what to do in those instances. Mainly though, the only thing you can ever teach to be prepared for is anything, and do whatever you can to protect.
It's amazing how instinct just kicks in.

Here's another article. I'm glad she doesn't remember but unfortunately I feel bad for Maxim b/c he feels guilty(like I thought he might).
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6315362/
Can somebody confirm something for me please. I've only
seen the tape once but did I really see Maxim shift her head and neck before the medics got there?
OK, I'm a neuro nurse and if he did that then skaters need to know a little more basic first aid and REMEMBER it.
Unless it's life over limb you never, ever move anyone who's not moving limbs on their own (and even if they are) after a hard fall that snaps one's head and neck around like Tatiana's did.
I know people want to run and help, etc but this is the one place that if you don't how to help ( in this instance proper c-spine precautions which I notice the medics were doing) someone could be in a chair, on a ventilator for the rest of lives.
Stay by the person, reassure them help is coming etc but don't move them unless the roof is falling in.
I've looked after three different patients who's quadraplegia occurred because of neck fractures people at the scene did not realize the person had.
This is one thing anyone involved in high risk activity has to make a point of remembering because the cost can be so great if it's not.
OK I'll get off the soap box now.

I was walking to my dining hall and heard these guys talking about it in front of me. These guys I am 100% sure do NOT watch skating regularly. It's gotten that big.

After watching their SP on ESPN last night (or was it ESPN2?) I'm not surprised that they had the fall. They stumbled/struggled with a similar looking lift in the SP. I actually had to close my eyes when it happened, even though I knew they fell in the FS, not the SP.
They've been on a few morning talk shows since yesterday, and it sounds like they're going to take it easy for a bit, stay in a hotel for a few days, before they go back to Chicago to re-group. At least, I think they said Chicago.
Anyways, I'm just glad that it appears that she's going to be OK.

And now their coach is complaining about the way things were handled at the arena and how long it took for the medics to get to her.

Well why does it take something horrible to happen in skating for it to get any coverage in Australia?
Seriously, people have been telling me they showed the fall on sports programs here and had pictures in the paper.
However there has been absolutely no other coverage about Skate America in the Australian media except for this. And skating generally gets no coverage, even during the Worlds.
So again the only chance we get to see skating here is when there is drama.
After watching their SP on ESPN last night (or was it ESPN2?) I'm not surprised that they had the fall. They stumbled/struggled with a similar looking lift in the SP.
Hubby and I were saying the same thing. We also noted that Marinin looked totally winded after the SP.
I was very impressed with Marinin when he replied to a question regarding the cause of the fall, that it was a technical error. He did not make any excuses or try to blame a fault in the ice.
