Hmm, sounds like Nussear and Gates are good...I wasn't really expecting a lot out of them. Hope I get to see them!

Thanks for the results, Ellyn. Enjoyed your descriptions on the top finishers. Does anyone know why the novice, junior, and senior teams began the competition with the free dance? Seems odd :? , but there must be a reason.

Because at this event, it doesn't matter. Each phase of the competition has seperate winners--FD, OD, and compulsories. It's not a combined result. For whatever reason they decided to schedule the FD earlier than the others, since it doesn't matter anyway.

Nussear/Gates sound much stronger than I would have expected. This may put a whole different picture on the US National Competition this year. From what was reported they sound very dynamic!

Madonna medley
[/quote:481d969f91]
How cool! A madonna medley?!I wonder whose idea it was to use this for their freedance?! Didn't Tom Dickson choreograph this program? I bet he did a great job with this music. What specific Madonna songs were used?
One other great idea for freedance music I think would be a Cher medley. Which would be more fun?!?!
In response to their placement at LP, I hope they aren't too disappointed. I think that once they are able to work together a bit longer, they'll really be good. I look forward to seeing their placement improve by Nationals.
Good luck Crystal and Nick!

In Novice the 3rd place team may look "really really young" but they are
actually in high school! (Koob-Dody and Antonelli)
I am thrilled for Emily and Matthew in Senior Dance, and not the least bit surprised by their winning the freedance, and same for Kimberly Navarro and Robert Schmalo-great potential and always using exciting and unpredictable music selections.
wow gonna be an exciting year in dance!

If you look at the Open Blues it is fascinating to see the differences in the 3 International judges from Russia, Canada and Great Britiain, compared to how the USA judges voted.
It seems to me the USA judges tend to go with familiar names. It has been my experience that they often rank ice dancers based on prior knowledge of them more than the actual event taking place.

I'm very happy for Matthews & Zavozin. They looked great last week in practice and I'm glad they could win the FD! :)

Does anyone know why Davis/White and Russell/Metzger dropped out of compulsories I was so curious how they would do. Is teher now a final round with the two groups A & B combined?
How did Unger look with his new partner? I read Augie Hill looked very good -how did his partner look?
thanks

There is a final round for each group (the next 2 dances) -- and then the top of each group is combined for one last dance to determine the overall winner of the compulsories.

The first section was "Frozen", the one Pasha (or was she Oksana then?) and Platov used on COI four or five years ago. The second section was "Vogue". The Vogue section seemed to go on a lot longer than the Frozen section. In all honesty, while I liked the dance and the choreography, I think the music choice was a poor one for competition. It would have been an awesome show program, though.

"Jaw-dropping" lifts is exactly what I'd expect to see in a review of Emilie Nussear - she has a major talent for that. Excellent partner choice, Matt - welcome back to both of you!

From what I saw in Placid Matthews and Zavozine will be one of the teams of the future in U.S. Dance. I don't think many of the other teams at this event compare. They are far stronger than any of the other Novice teams that have moved up to Junior and are a wonderful match. The other Novice teams that have moved up don't seem to carry speed and the routines seem simple and soft in comparison. Some of the older teams look good but they don't have the spark of this young team. I will be interested to see how the marking goes in the NAC event in Huntsville. I was surprised at how poorly the Canadian team of G&NA did in the Free and OD. I thought they had good speed and difficult routines. They are not nearly as polished as the 1st place team of M&Z, but I thought they looked good relative to the other U.S. novice teams that have moved to Junior. Was reputation playing a role in Placid?
Some of the male skaters looked great like, Augie Hill and the best male skater I thought in the entire event was Denys Latyshev. These two carried thier partners like feathers around the rink, but to compete with high level teams from other countries both the male and females must be great skaters. Without a great deal of improvement in the partners I don't think it's in the cards for these two team in the near future but who knows, hard work can get you a long way and the girls seem young.
I thought the top teams in both Senior and Junior look strong and well matched but not to far from the top the teams start to look somewhat mis-matched although there are still some strong skaters. That's my two cents on Lake Placid.

I saw many of the juveniles and intermediates along with the Novice International, but I gave up taking notes early on as there were just too many skaters and events to keep track of and I decided to sit back and enjoy the skating.
It was a fabulous event and the quality of the skating was excellent at all levels. The number of skaters has at least double or tripled from when I was here 2 years ago. The senior and junior events were awesome and most the programs looked very finished. There were some timing issues and some stumbles, but the quality was amazing for how early in the season it is. Nationals are still 6 months away and the top competitors in each group put on close to a national level performance.
[b:7f48dd9b64]Seniors,[/b:7f48dd9b64] Nussear and Gates were really good in the FD along with Moxely and Kirsanov who had several stumbles in the FD. Goodwin and Obzansky have made the transition to senior and looked very good. I really liked N/G’s OD program, but the yodeling music has to go. To me, their music is in conflict with the ISU guidelines, which defines it as [i:7f48dd9b64]"grand ballroom where couples dance with neat footwork and elegant style rather than those dances typical of the country, village or barn."[/i:7f48dd9b64] What I really want to know is if he’s having a costume made to match hers?
[b:7f48dd9b64]Juniors,[/b:7f48dd9b64] All I can say is that we have a great group of juniors and they are really impressive. The entire group was exciting to watch and I have to mention at least the top 6 or so. Matthews and Zavozin were really good and she is much stronger this year. I loved the way they improved on last year’s FD by adding more technical elements to what I thought was a weak program. Devins and O'Keefe were really smooth and elegant and look much better than they did at Nationals. The contrast between the two FDs is pretty big where M/Z were fast and exciting, D/O were slow and elegant. Steed and Hill, this is one of my favorite couples because of the energy and expression they put into every dance. There seems to be several Ricky Martin type programs this year and it can be difficult music to skate to. They had a fall in the OD and Samba, but still placed well. Leo Ungar is back with his new partner Carly Donowick and it looks to be a good match, but she needs to let him lead. The tuxedo he was wearing was really bad and they need to get him a new one that fits. Solomon and Cohen have made the move to juniors and had a good competition with excellent CDs. He took a fall in the Blues at the beginning, but was able to get up and back with her to start the first pattern. Davis and White only skated the FD, which looked a little off time, but their soft knees and edge quality is still excellent. With Charlie competing at the Arizona NAC the week before, I’m not surprised that they were a little off. M/Z, S/C and D/W all used their FD music from last year.
Frisch and Bommentre had great CDs and the maturity of their skating was very evident in how smooth they skated and by their presence on the ice. Many of the top juniors were fast and strong, but not smooth. I was very impressed by Stephanie Ellis and Patrick Connelly as they were skating very well for a new couple
The junior CD final with the top 6 couples doing the Silver Samba was great. F/B were smooth and strong, D/O were quiet with great edges and patterns, S/H and S/C had by far the most expression and fun with the dance. If M&Z have a weakness it’s the CDs, but their CDs were still very good.
Novice, here's where the large number of teams became very confusing. Pratt and Giles were real standouts throughout the competition. This couple has a really bright future and looks to be the couple to beat. McCullough and Dear looked good, but need more time together. Their first patterns were good, but then they seem to have minor partnering problems in the following patterns. Copely and Wensel did well for a new team and she skates very well, they also competed the junior CDs. Goodsell and Hurych look like they will be contenders in the next couple of months and were pretty good for a team that just started skating together.
I heard several rumors about when JGP assignments would be handed out, and most of them conflicted with each other. JK

I dont know how Davis/White placed as well as they did in freedance..there is absolutely no expression or connection to the music.
I think that is the key difference between Morgan Matthews/Max Z, and the other teams...M/Z have pizaaz and excitiment, and musicality. If an ice dance team looks slow and disconnected from the music they are missing essential qualities that lead to future success.
In other words, teams that do the freedance like its a [i:5f52292d10]compulsory [/i:5f52292d10]dance should not keep getting overmarked.

I'm disappointed to say that I found the junior event at Placid very predictable with placements, with the exception of Donowick/Unger.
