Just curious as I occasionally visit the site for skating news, but the last few days it has asked for user name and password to view the boards.

Yes, there was an announcement posted on FSU that the board would be closed on non-members from Oct. 17th on but registration would remain open until 10/20...so you can still sign up if you'd like to. New registrations won't be accepted from 10/21-11/2 (during Skate America and Skate Canada.)

Not 100% sure, as I don't go there, but I think they often restrict the boards to members-only during big competitions, or times when they expect a lot of traffic, and restrict registrations then too. Perhaps since the skating season is about to start, they tightened things up. But maybe someone else has more info.

edit---posted at the same time as Robin! Glad she had more info.

Cause the amount of traffic on the board which comes from the registrated users is immense already. During the season and especially during certain events the board just can't take additional traffic by guests.

It's happened before where the entire site crashed. At one point I saw 500 registered people online at once (I think they have the date on their site when that happened) and then they just left it open to those who help donate and keep their site up. Once the Ladies Long program was done (I think it was Worlds) then the site was restored to members then later to guests (I think a week after)

The FSU record is 711 online during the Ladies LP at Worlds and AFAIK, the board didn't crash at all then, although a few people had trouble getting through from time to time.

Registration is closed until the end of Skate Canada, then will open until the next GP. Anyone who wants to register while the board is closed can if they make a donation toward the bandwidth bill.
