THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14
SENIOR MEN
1. Braden Overett- 3ax great, 3z (fall), 3r (ft down/stumble). Layover camel position nice, whee very fast and expressive, sit/sit amazing n fast, serp footwork very difficult and well done to the music, split jump wow, a full split as Sasha Cohen can do...awesome, great job all around! Loved it!
2. Daniel Lee- 3f-2t, 3z (hand down), 1ax. Great speed and expression, spin combo ending with a half-sit kind of position, very cool looking, absolutely terrific footwork in both sequences, such a pleasure to watch, sit spin excellent, death drop to sit spin. Flamenco-type music. Man I love his skating!
Southwestern regionals seems to have so many great men, both in senior and junior!
SENIOR LADIES QUAL GROUP A
1. Tiffany Vise- 3t-2t, 2ax, 2f, spiral into 3s to 2t, 2t?, 2z (hand down), 3s (fallout). Layback very nice, combo spin gorgeous, catchfoot spin cool, good footwork, Y spin, spirals wonderful. Complete, cohesive, moving, and fun program to Prince of Egypt. Tiffany gives so much energy, speed, and spark to this program, so nice to see. This is a great skater and wonderful music to skate to, a winning combination!
2. Yoyo Ma- 2ax-2t, 2z, 3s (stepout)-2t, 2.5 flip, 2r, 2t-3t, 2ax (cht). Layback so fast, spirals ok, great fast spins overall. Flamenco music.
3. Amy Howerton- 2z, 2ax (fallout), 2t, 2f, 2s, 2f, 2z to 2t. Layback nice, program to Swan Lake and Nutcracker, would like to see more originality but otherwise solid.
SENIOR LADIES QUAL GROUP B
1. Lindsey Stucks- 2ax, 3z (2ft)-2t, 3t (stumble), 2s, 2f, 3r, 3s. Layback position needs improvement, fast good combo spin at the end. Overall a great job, amazing triple jumps and other stuff good.
2. Karleen Armstrong- 3s (2ft)-2t, 3t (2ft), 2ax (fall), 2r-2r very nice, 2z-2r, 2f, 2z. Camel great, lovely dive into spirals, great stretch, lots of speed and energy.
3. Melissa Kwan- 2r, 2f (foot down)-2t, 2z (foot down), 2ax (2ft), 3s, 2ax, 2z, spins could use more speed. Heavy music that her presence got lost in, I felt. Some great potential here, though, overall solid job.
4. Erica Archambault- 3s (fall), 2t, 1z, 1r, 2f, 2t, 2r, 1ax. Scheherezade. Death drop sit, very nice camel, change of edge spiral and Charlotte, side layback very cool, straightline footwork ok. Good stretch, speed ok. She seems taller than I remember her from before. I would guess she will either need her 3 salchow or a 2axel to get through...judges just cannot give it to her otherwise. Bummer an injury put her behind in her training. The short could be tough for her...
5. Kristine Jackson- 2f, 2r, 3s (fall), 2ax (2ft), 2z, 3s (und/so), 2f (to). Nice camel, layback cool and effective position and placement in music/program. Cute ending, overall good job, to music of Santana.
6. Ashlee Homan- 2z (fall), 3s-2t stumble, 3t (fall), 2ax awesome, 1f, 2ax (fall, splat). Layback ok, split very nice into illusions fast to camel spin, very cool, footwork ok, spins fast at end, great. She skates with a lot of attack and abandon, which to some might look sloppy but it's always fast and fun to watch. If she can find a way to get more consistent with her jump technique, she'll be right up there with the top ladies in the region, maybe even the section.
Based on these groups, I would guess Stucks, Vise, and Armstrong are the favorites for top 3, after that I don't know....maybe Yoyo Ma unless Erica Archambault can land a few things.
JUNIOR LADIES- QUAL GROUP A (in order of my guessed placements)
To start, I should mention that Alexandra Curry and Sarah Shepard also skated in this group, but I missed their skates and will have to go back and watch them later. This is a strong/tough region for junior ladies!!!
Caroline Miller- 2ax, 2f-2t, 3s, 3t, falls on 3r and 3s, 2z good. Nice camel, very nice speed and stroking, great layback, footwork good, overall very strong program. Flamenco/Spanish
Lauren Hennessy- 3z, 3f (fall), 3r, 3s (fall), 2z-2r, 3s-2t, 2ax (fall). Good camel, other spins ok. The program has room for growth in terms of speed and choreography, but the jumps are amazing, and it has got to be tiring doing all those triples in one program! But they look like good jumps for her. Scheherezade was the music, I believe.
Stephanie Kuban- 2ax-2t, 3t-2t (or 3t-3t, hard to tell!), 2z, 3s (fall), 2r, 2ax (stepout), 2f. Wobbly camel spin, great dropped leg layback, very fast and exciting overall, quick rotation in the air for her jumps. Her entry to her final combo spin (starting with camel) resulted in a fall but she quickly got back up and re-did the spin, and managed to end on time with the music as well. Phil Collins or Elton John was some of the music.
Ambar Kaiser- 3s (turnout)-2t, 2z-2t, 3r (fall), 2t (fallout), 2ax (stepout), 2s, split to 2f-2t. Spirals and layback ok. Nice speed and expression, good end combo spin! Cool program to Peter Gunn, among other stuff.
Jenna Walton- 2ax (fall), 2s, 2z-2r, tano 2r, 2ax (fallout), 2f-2t, 2z. Nice spin combo, layback ok, good camel. Overall a strong impression.
Alexandra Dody-Hetler- 2f-2t, 3r (fall), 1ax (fellout), 2s, 2z-2t, 2f. Good spirals.
Maggie Beller- 2z, 2f, 2ax (fall), 2r to 2t, 3s (fall), 2ax (2ft/und), 2z-2t (fall). Nice high spirals, Good layback and footwork, ending sort of trails off both musically and choreographically, but you can't fault her for not skating to the music!
Emily Aurand- 2z into 2t, 3s (2ft), 1ax (stepout), 2f, 2r (fallout), 2ax (fall), 2f-2t. Save for a wobble on her camel spin, the elements were fairly solid.
Christina Anderson- 2f, 3s (und)-2t, 2t?, 2r, 2z, falls on 2ax and 3s. Holst's Planets was the music.
I have to leave for work in a bit, I will be doing reports for the rest of the day's events tonight and/or tomorrow morning, provided the webcast archives work for me!
JR LADIES QUAL GROUP B
I decided I had time to watch a couple skaters from this group...
Nicole Tahtouh- 3f (fall), 3s great, 2z-2t, 2ax (swingy landing), 3r (slight stepout), 3s-2t, 2f. Strong, quality skating, great final combo spin. Classical music.
Kathryn McSwain- 3r, 3s-2t, 2z, 2ax (prerot.), 2f into 2t-2r, 1ax, 1z. The triples may have had a slight underrotation but didn't seem that major. All spins very fast and in good positions, great power and speed, lovely spirals as well, a mood piece reminiscent of a black/white old romance movie soundtrack, gorgeous presentation.
Courtney McMurty- 3r (2ft?), 2ax-2t-2r, 3s (cht), 2f, 2r, 2z, 2f-2 toe ax. Santana was music. Great camel, sit/sit good, end combo spin a lil slower. Good skate!
