Mens:
Ugh! I don't even want to talk about the men's costumes except to say that Tim's was OK.

Womens:
Evidently, a pack of wild dogs got into the wardrobe room for Carmen, and Julia Sebestian made her dress from the tatters that remained.

Arakawa had a nice color but way too much going on in the costume to be able to focus cleanly on the skating.

Michelle's was appropriate if a bit boring.

Kimmie Meissner's was cute and went well with her music.

Sasha's was a bit more flattering to her figure than her usual, but still no great shakes AFAIC.

Miki Adno gets my gold for one of the most beautiful costumes ever. Now if only she can skate up to it.

And Michelle's was from last year as well...

Don't forget Jenny's dress was from last year (and the year before if you discount the color change)

I agree. If she gets rid of the bodice and replaces it with a solid pink or white, it would look better...and maybe forget the whole choker part, too.

I can't remember seeing so many bad costumes at one event since Tara's "Hip-Hop On Ice" special. 8O The only decent costumes, IMO, were Tim's, Kimmie's, Sasha's and Michelle's (and at least three out of four of those were from previous seasons!)

I thought Miki's costume looked quite a bit like one of Yuka Sato's old dresses (I remember Yuka wearing a similar costume sometime during the late-90s), but that could just be me.

It looks like a lot of costume trends from the '80s are coming back, and for the most part, I don't like what I see so far. 8O

Arakawa's costume was another disaster for her...but if she dyed the flesh colored parts pink to match the rest, and got rid of those thick laces down the back it could be okay.

The most horrible costume, in my eyes, was Brian Joubert's. He looked like he was dipped in molasses, and that image made his skating seem even slower than it was! Wonder if it came from Ilia Kullik's Olympic costumer.

Yuka Sato was and still is just about the best-costumed skater ever. Anyone who borrows one of her old costumes has very good taste!

I didnt watch the mens. There's not any guy I really enjoy now that Yags is pro. *cries*

Sasha-I like it. I know its a temp, but it really did work for the feel of the music. Cant wait to see the real one.

Kwan-I dont like Vira Wang's dresses. Theres just something about her dresses I dont like.

Shiz-Wow...just...wow. I really wonder what the *beep* she was thinking. It doesnt look like R&J to me.

Julia-Jesus! Even worse than Shiz...I didnt think that was possible. Wow.

Miki-Too plain.

Kimmie-Pleasent and fit the music. Not award winning, but not bad either.

Amber-Usually I detest her dresses, but this one wasnt bad.

Jenny-I like the dress. Honest. Ive just seen it waaaay too much. Time for a new one.

I loved Miki's dress! The color was gorgeous on her! A lot more mature outfit for her than last year. I noticed that a lot of the other Campbell's outfits were from previous years so I'm really looking forward to seeing what the real costumes will be.

I didn't mind Julia's dress as much as I thought I would. I had seen a picture before the broadcast and my first impression was "ugh, what were they thinking?!?" When I saw the dress in the performance, I remembered what someone had said about the dress being half Carmen and half the soldier and that they were trying to portray both sides of the story. Then it made some sense. Still a little over the top if you ask me, but I thought it was better than Shizuka's dress, which in my opinion looked more like cotton candy in bondage! Sorry, but I just can't warm up to that one!

I don't like Vera Wang's designs either. I hate the metal plate look that the agglomerations of sequins or stones or whatever they are create.

When a skater looks chunky or boxy because of the costume, it can't help but make the skating look that way also. IMO, a skating costume should be sleek, form fitting, and have nothing distracting. Kind of like "first do no harm". They can take it from there to match the music, but when they forget those basics, the costumes are a detraction to the skating.

Isn't Miki's dress old? I'm sure I've seen it before. :?:

I looked around for a photo of the old Yuka Sato costume I mentioned earlier and found this:

And here's a photo of Miki's Campbell's costume:

I can't see much of a difference, can you? ;)

Thanks jcspkbfan! I knew I'd seen that dress before. For some reason I thought Miki wore it before though. I would guess then that she will be getting a new dress later on for her new program.

Although Miki Ando's dress was my favorite, I give Kimmie Meissner top points for the dress matching the music. When I saw her dress in warmup, I thought to myself, "That dress would be just perfect for La Mer or Daphnis and Chloe, because it just looks like the ocean." And then her music started and. . . Bingo!

Miki has worn it before too. She wore it at 03 Junior Worlds for her short program.

Someone photoshopped an image that kind of matches your description:

Now that looks much better, IMO!

I also think the simple pink dress Shizuka wore for last year's exhibition number would be appropriate for her new LP:

http://www.scratchspin.com/2004/worlds04/arakawa4.html

I love this dress and I think it's a dramatic change from most of the costumes Shizuka's worn during the past few seasons. I would never recognize her as the same skater in the above photos!

OMG it the exact same dress.........
I really liked Kimmies dress I thought it was great......
I also thought that Brian Joubert's costume was neat.............if u dont agree then just compare it to Sandhu's costume last year (the pink one)

As long as they leave the shoulder pads and leg of mutton sleaves in the 80s it's ok

I think Michelle's costume was so classy (as usual) and I can't wait to see a new Vera Wang!

Sasha's dress is so nice (possibly my favourite). Too bad she didn't keep it for the rest of her 2003 season with Rachmaninoff.

Miki's was great, but she needs more artistry to skate up to it! (but I must say she is improving on it)

I don't know about Shizuka's... I think they should go back to the drawing board no offence, it was just too much for such a classic piece of music. But I still love her program no doubt!

Julia's was really creative though, I didn't find it that bad!
