... I like the new scoring system, particularly with the detailed judges scores. For these competitions that I'm never going to get the opportunity to see, I get to see who attempted what elements, what the judges thought of their actual skating skills, etc. (The elements for Nebelhorn weren't yet available when I posted this). For some of the "non-premier" events, i.e. Nebelhorn, it seems like a decent way to gauge depth of field/margin of victory.
For example, Nebelhorn pairs: http://www.deu.de/shared/data/results/nt2004/CAT011RS.HTM
Hinzman/Parchem won by a decent margin (almost 10 points), but the rest of the field was right on top of each other. If you only looked at ordinals, the last place pair could seem a bit outclassed, as Hinzman/Parchem won both programs, Brozovic/Futas came in last in both programs, and the rest of the teams were all mixed up. Looking at scores however, Brozovic/Futas were only 3.47 points behind the next higher pair and only 11.84 points out of second place ... not much different than the margin of victory. My impression is that this was probably a good competition where all the pairs were playing in the same ballpark.
On the other end of the scale, look at the Nebelhorn men's results:
http://www.deu.de/shared/data/results/nt2004/CAT006RS.HTM
Craig won by almost 20 points, which I interpret as kicking the butt of the rest of the field. There is relative clumping of 2nd-9th, 10th-14th, 15th-17th, and 18th-20th. In this case, the ordinals show the same clumping. The winner had over twice the score as the last place skater, it seems there was quite a range of ability in this event.
If there was someone that actually saw the event, it would be nice if you could comment on what the numbers look like vs. what the competition looked like.
