I have to say I'm surpised. I know a lot of people were touting this union, but Shae did such a fantastic job in her solo work in CSOI this spring that I really thought (well, hoped) she'd stay single. And after Victor, I just can't see her with anyone else, not even someone as good as Peter. But it sure will be interesting to see what they can put together!
I'm assuming, though, that this will be a professional duo only. I suppose Peter might think there's more he could do as an amateur, but I know Shae was very happy to end that part of her career. Plus there's the whole citizenship issue.

I totally agree with you there. It's just not a pairing that I can picture working in my head - but then again, I've been known to have some strange ideas about skating. I saw Shae skate in CSOI and really enjoyed it. :) I would much rather see her skate solo than as part of another partnership.

BTW, do you think it is "official"? I couldn't find anything in the news portion of their site, and I googled it and couldn't find any announcement there either. Perhaps Blades was just speculating?

Hmmmmm.....the link is telling me "page can't be found".
I'm assuming from the previous posts that Peter's new partner is to be Shae.....I think they'll make an interesting pair and I think I'll like them together. I'm certainly anxious to actually see them skate together!

Wow! In interviews she has said she would only compete for Canada. Wonder what will happen now.

Me too, and when I went back a directory (figuring it was a broken link), I got some nasty-gram whining that I was looking for un-linked items and my IP was being logged. :-b

I would imagine that they would only skate as pros so country representation wouldn't be an issue.

well, that's the whole idea! i really think this whole "mystery" partner thing was awfully silly. truthfully now, did any of you think it would be anyone other than shae?
ya, ya, someone recently tried to float a rumor that tanith would be the anointed one, but that made no sense (now at least, perhaps a few years back), so i think i'm kinda of insulted by the blades on ice hype over the last month or so. are we all that gullible? i think not. and, i will NOT have to buy that issue. i can wait for the reports.
i will say this, at least shae is dynamic and dedicated to dance, and willing to put in the hard work needed to suceed. i suspect it will be a joy to skate with her for peter.

Well, I probably won't buy it now either -- I just checked out the price on the news-stand copy and it is $7.00 !! I would rather spend the money to go skate...
I do look forward to being able to see them skate together though!!

I am very excited about his new partnership, although i will still miss Shae-Lynn's old parternship with Victor. Does anyone know who they will skate for; Russia or Canada?

I have to say, I'm pretty surprised, having heard nothing of the "mystery partner" or any rumors.
I followed a link to photos of Naomi's baby, and found this little blurb about Peter and Shae:
Sorry, but the link didn't work, so here's the text
In the upcoming issue of Blades on Ice Magazine, 10-time Canadian Champion and 2003 World Champion, SHAE-LYNN BOURNE announces that she will team up with 5-time U.S. National Champion, PETER TCHERNYSHEV.
Bourne & Tchernyshev began skating together this summer under the guidance of coach, Nikolai Morozov and train in Newington, CT.
The newest ice-dancing duo currently represent different countries, Peter (United States) and Shae-Lynn (Canada) but hope to compete for Canada in the 2006 Olympic Games in Italy. "We are both very excited about the opportunity to skate together," said Bourne & Tchernyshev
Interesting to note that they hope to compete in Turino...wonder how that'll work....???

The clip worked for me. They look terrific! I wasn't going to get too excited about this new pairing. I remember how excited everyone was when Usova and Platov got together and that didn't go too far. Anyway, it looks like Shae & Petah have the best of both worlds. Peter can lift (Victor couldn't) and Shae can do footwork (Naomi couldn't). And they have so much speed. The only cricitism I have is that Shae regressed to the lean a bit, but that will probaby get fixed.

It was in the Toronto Star this weekend, too. My husband smugly said, "I know who Shae-Lynn's new partner is!" when he read it so I smugly back said, "I already know, Peter Tchernyshev!"

as much as many would like to see peter actually have a shot at achieving his full potential in the world arena, i'm inclined to think this is more publicity hype. but why not try!

Coincidentally or not, there are currently only 3 dance teams listed as part of the Canadian senior national team (as opposed to 5 or 6 in the other 3 disciplines). So with Skate Canada saying they support Shae ... I wonder if we'll be seeing them as early as the grand prix events this fall?
And I wonder how Marie-France and Patrice are taking this news?
And just to make things even more interesting ... anyone else notice this from the Blades site? In the promo for the Oct issue, they include "Anissina & Peizerat talk about their skating comeback." 8O

fanticizing a little international "collaboration" to build excitement for "eligible" dance and benefit both country's international standings. b/a vs. b/t

Appears that Wing & Lowe won't get back to Worlds, ever. With three top notch dance teans in B&T, D&L, and L&M that should finish in the top 10 at Worlds, there's no room for them.

now we all know of pete's (maybe shae 'n' pete would roll off the tongue better than "Shae-Lynn Bourne and Peter Tchernyshev") usfs history, even a bit about his first usa partner before naomi.
but what of his history prior to coming to the usa? i just googled a few different combinations and came up with little but bithdays and l/t or b/t reports.
he was already a talented dancer when he arrived. all i remember ever hearing is something about his grandfather being a successful freestyle skater in russia and that peter actually was quite a good jumper. the connection to dance and his competitive dance history before coming to the usa is almost a blank [was not natalia annenko (sp) his former wife---she skated with genrick strenski (sp)---and then she coached peter and his first partner?].
can anyone fill in information about his training background and competitive history in the ussr---partner(s) name(s) and competition record?

I'm a little confused here. I thought that part of the reason Shae Lynn and Victor broke up was because she no longer wanted to skate in the eligable ranks and he did. Why would she want to start another eligable caree from scratch with Peter when she already had a successful one with Victor?
Artemis
09-10-2004, 10:45 AM
^ It wasn't so much that Victor still wanted to skate eligible and Shae didn't, it was more that Victor was all about the competition and not really into the show scene (and there are virtually no opportunities for pro dance competitions), while Shae was quite happy doing shows. But yes, you're right, it does seem a bit odd doesn't it. Perhaps Shae just really wanted to have a partner again, and Peter really wants a world medal so she agreed to go for it.
I'm asuming we'll here more about this soon!

Thanks for the link. I googled Sophie Eliazova and found this write-up by Sandra Loosemore -- a review of 1995 Easterns where she and Peter placed 3rd:
"Senior dance went about as expected, with Webster & Kravette winning
easily in spite of him having an accident to his hand in the original
dance. I recognized the third-place couple, Sophie Eliazova and Petr
Tchernychev, as skaters I'd seen in Lake Placid -- he, in particular, had
struck me as being a wonderful talent. It was weird because I never once
saw them actually skating *together* in Lake Placid; he was doing all of
this amazingly complicated footwork on his own, and she was stroking
around on her own, and that was it. BTW, Sophie is a native New Yorker,
not a Russian import. I also heard that one of the other dance teams
filed a protest because Sophie & Petr were allowed to compete in spite of
having filed their paperwork late, so they may not be allowed to go to
nationals after all."
I also see that they did go to Nationals that year and placed 13th.

I may have seen Peter as early as 1993, at a rink in Hingham, MA -- there was this very tall skater who showed up there, from Russia, who was a friend of Oleg Fediukov. They said the guy wasn't an ice-dancer YET or was going to become a US ice-dancer but he had to learn all of the preliminary through pre-silver or so dances because they don't do them in Russia and he had to pass all of his tests here. I'm pretty sure it was Peter.
I also remember that Natalia Annenko was seen at that rink, so that makes the connection clearer -- does anyone else out there have a memory of this, or is this just my own little fantasy??
During the news of her break-up with Victor, Shae always said that she didn't want to retire, she wanted to keep skating. She then skated as a single ice dancer. My guess would be that she realized her opportunities were limited in the world of single ice dance so she decided to try things out with Peter.

Unfortunately, her and Peter's opportunities as pro ice dancers probably wouldn't be much better. :( I can't even remember the last time I watched ice dancers compete at a pro competition...and even during the "good old days" of pro competitions galore between 1994 and 1998, there were far fewer opportunities for pro ice dancers than for the other three disciplines.
I wonder how much that fact contributed to Shae and Peter's decision to stay eligible? How long would they have to wait before competing at Worlds or Olympics? Would Peter be able to get his Canadian citizenship in time for 2006 (assuming they plan to compete for Canada)? Considering how long he had to wait to get U.S. citizenship and how long it's taking Tanith Belbin to get her citizenship, I hope the Canadian procedure is a little shorter than the American!
Regardless, this sounds like a very exciting partnership and I can't wait to see them on the ice together! I wish them the very best of luck. :D

Its kind of exciting news, because they will likely come up with something unique, given the strengths of each. I'll be interesed to see.
I wonder what the "learning curve" is for ice dancers...for pairs, given that each is strong, its still about 3 years to meld into a real pair. That is about how long it took Kazakova and Demietriev.
Anyone know?

Well the citizenship process is somewhat faster here than in the US, but I wouldn't have thought it would be fast enough for them to compete in 2006. Worlds is another question, of course -- Peter doesn't need Canadian citizenship for that, he just needs permission from the federation. Skate Canada has already come out in support of the pairing, so I think that's a a pretty good sign.

The revival of old skaters/new pairings (Shae-Lynn and Peter, Denis and Patenaude) is taking its toll on Canadian seniors. Longpre and Zukiwsky have decided to call it quits. Can't say I blame them one bit.

I am very sorry to hear that Judith and Shae Ron have decided to retire.
I am sure at their age and stage of development, and looking ahead to what their opportunities might be ... they have likely decided this is as far as they can go. Based on Chantal's re-entry and results of last season and Shae-Lynn's re-entry announcement ... there must be at least one or more teams thinking about their future in Canadian ice dance. :frus:

Not to mention the international assignments that were given to Patinaude and Denis (Nebelhorn and now Skate Canada) that IMO should have gone to a member of the Senior National Team!!!!!!!!!! No, I'm not bitter.......... :frus:
