I'm a AAA member and just got the latest newsletter from them. There is an advertisement for Skate America that is offering up to a $15 discount for AAA members on 4-day passes and $3 on individual tickets. To order you need to call the Mellon Arena Group Services at 412-642-1977 and mention your AAA membership to receive the discount.

Thanks for the information. I called today just to see if it would apply to ticket orders placed via the mail-in order forms, and the word is no - just the call-in orders from now on.

A friend and I are going to Skate America and would appreciate any hotel recommendations for the Pittsburgh area. My friend called an SA rep who said that all the major hotels are booked. Are there any Comfort Inns, Hampton Inns, etc?? Thank you in advance.

Will you have transportation? There are just a couple of hotels in immediate walking distance - Marriott (official hotel), Ramada (sketchy) and Omni William Penn (fab historic hotel). There are a few others in downtown Pittsburgh, but I definitely would not recommend walking home to them at night. There is also a Sheraton at Station Sq that you can take the trolley from for about $2 (I think). Anything else would require a car.

If you have a car, you could look in Oakland/Shadyside (You'll find the following there - Holiday Inn Express, Hampton, Courtyard (my personal recommendation), Wyndham, Residence Inn and Best Western.). The rates in this area would be cheaper than downtown and you can get to the arena in about 15 minutes. This would probably be the closest place other than in downtown to stay. If you find any hotels that look promising, pmail me and I'll be happy to let you know how easy they would be for traveling in/out and how safe.

How far is it from the airport to the arena? Most of the hotels closer to the arena seemed to be full, including those in the Shadyside/Oakland area.

Travel from the airport to the arena can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 1hr 30 minutes depending on traffic. You might want to look in the Robinson Township area - commute from there should be less than 45 minutes. I know that there is a Marriott Springhill Suites that might be a good option.

Thanks, PAskate. We'll definitely be looking for something closer than the airport. We have a website at work where we can get discounts on places to stay, but I've found that their estimates of distances are sometimes incorrect. One of the rooms listed as being within two miles of the downtown area was also listed as being 1.5 miles from the airport, and I didn't think that could be correct.
