For anyone who is interested, just thought I would post a review of The Sleeping Beauty on Ice which is currently on in Melbourne, Australia and doing an Australian tour.

I went to the opening night last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The show is being staged at a theatre, so the size of the ice is very limited. But it is quite amazing what they can do on that small sheet of ice. There were quite a few triple toes and double axels and lots of pair moves. It had some really great choroegraphic moves as well as well as a bit of harness work.

The great thing about the show is that it can appeal to skaters but also to the general public as it has more of a focus on the actual ballet then trying to be a Disney on Ice type show. My friend who is not into skating at all loved it. It is an overall package - the costuming was great and the sets amazing.

Mandy Wotzel played the Princess Aurora and did a great job. She showed off some of the skills that lead her to being a world champion with a split double twist lift and throw axel. I got to speak to her after the show and she said that she is really loves doing the show.

As for the rest of the cast, basically a group of skaters that I have never heard of, but they were extremely talented. Anton Klykov played Catalabutte and was definately the highlight of the show. He was doing triple toes and double axels all over the place, but even threw a triple axel in (wasn't quite successful but wasn't far off).

Maria Borovikova who played Carabosse. She got the biggest applause of the night and had the most interesting character. Lots of snarls and growls at the audience but some really great flexibility pairs moves with her band of henchmen.

The other mention I want to make is Olga Sharutenko. I saw her in Nutcracker on Ice last year and this year she plays the Lilac Fairy. She is such a fantastic talent. A very graceful skater and really captures your attention. Totally suited to this pivotal role in the show.

I cannot finish this review without picking the unintentional gasp moment of the night when the queen tripped over the tulle of her dress. Such is the joys of live theatre.

If this show comes your way in future, I definately recommend seeing it. Coming from a place that generally knows nothing about skating, I can say the audience were very appreciative and gave great applause and support the skaters at the end.

Nutcracker?! Sleeping Beauty?! Do shows like these ever come to the US? My daughter would much prefer them to SOI/COI.

The great thing about these shows is they tell a story but don't treat the audience as idiots when it comes to the skating like Disney seems to do. Disney is great for the little kids but if you want good skating it is worth seeing these shows. I will say Sleeping Beauty is much better than Nutcracker. Nutcracker seemed to drag on a bit.

The company who is putting on the show are the Imperial Russian Ice Stars. Tatiana Tarasova did the choreography but like I said, all the skaters, apart from Mandy Woetzel are skaters I have never really heard of before.

BTW- the good news is some of the cast members are doing a Masterclass at the theatre with some of our skaters tomorrow. Very exciting.

Anton Klykov didn't have much of a record internationally as far as I know, but I saw him on tapes from Russian Nationals a couple of times, in the late 90's, early 00's. I think he usually was somewhere in the Top 10, but not near the very top.

Olga Sharutenko did dance for Russia with Dmitri Naumkin, also in the late 90's.

Sharutenko and Naumkin were junior world champions in ice dance in 1995.

Hey, Aussie Willy.

Great review, as opposed to the one posted by The Age. *sigh*

I have the feeling Hilary Crampton doesn't like skating, and wasn't at all familiar with the ballet it is based on, either.

Janet Lynn skated to the Bluebird / Lilac Fairy interlude as a professional back in the early 80s. So, I am looking forward to seeing how it is interpreted.

Anyway, I'm off to see the show in a couple of hours.

Great that you got to meet Mandy Woetzel, by the way.

Cheers

Hope you enjoy/ed the show - I am sure you will.

Some of our skaters got to do a Masterclass with three of the skaters from the show on Friday. It was great and the skaters really enjoyed it - such a great opportunity seeing they don't often get to see top skaters up close. I think they learnt a lot and it was very inspiring for them. It was also great of the people who have organised the show to put this on for the skaters.

Just back from Sleeping Beauty on Ice.

The audience gave the show a full standing ovation.
It was the best theatre I have seen in a very long time.
Everybody loved it, and it was a real treat to see the skaters enjoy themselves.

Good Evening

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the nice comments that have been made about my show.

Just for your info , i am the Artistic Director and owner of the skating troupe , 'Imperial Russian Ice Stars' and was also the Art Director of last years 'Nutcracker on Ice' that toured in Australia.

Melbourne is the penultimate city of the tour here in Australia , and i can tell you that we have all had a fabulous time.

It's so nice that people from inside the sport , think so highly of the show.

If you would like any more info on my shows , please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks to you all

My 5yo daughter *loves* Disney on Ice, but she would actually prefer something more like a real ballet on ice and, honestly, after two shows, I have really had my fill of DOI. We have travelled a couple of hours to see a club show of Nutcracker on Ice, will make an overnight trip to see the Ice Theatre of New York and would travel to see the Imperial Russian Ice Stars too - if we ever had the opportunity. I guess the American skating audience that would appreciate anything more artistic than DOI is just too small. :(

Its sounds like a really nice show to go to. I wish a show like that would come to North America sometime.
