This is just the junior and senior report for Saturday. I’ll try to get the novice stuff posted sometime tomorrow, as well as anything else I skipped over during the past 3 days.

As always, I want to say I’m not a skating expert, just someone who wants to help pass along competition details to those who can’t be here for the event. If I’ve made any mistakes, I’m sorry to the skater/family/coach.

Junior Ladies Free Skate

Melissa Lind: (Les Miserables) 2a, 3s, flying camel(4), 2loop, camel(5 – change to outside edge), back charlotte into 2z, RFO spiral, 2a/2t, layback(9), 3t(wrong foot landed on), 2f/2l, 3s(feet crossed on landing resulted in a stumble out of the jump), camel/back camel/back sit/back scratch.

Amanda Adelson: 2a, 2z, flying camel(6), 3f(X), 3t(turned out on the landing), decent circular steps, layback(11), 3l(2ft), series of 3 spirals, 3s, 2a, single flip turn 2t, split jumps into stars into camel/sit/layback with a catch foot/back sit/back scratch.

Kathryn McSwain: 3s(X), 2z, 2a(short of rotation), flying camel(7), camel/layback/back camel/back sit, ina bauer into 3l(possibly 2ft?), 2f/2t(X), 3s(X), 2a, layback(nice position and arm accents to the music), 2l/single loop (2ft on the 2nd), LFO/bach charlotte, flying sit into scratch spin.

Ashley Kristich: 2f, 2a/2t, 2s, flying camel(6 – needs more jump), steps into 2t, outside spread eagle/LBO Kerrigan spiral/LFO/RBO inverted spiral, layback(7), ina bauer into 2z/2t, 2axel attempt that never got off the ice – just a turn on the ice, camel/sit/back camel/back upright cross foot spin with head back.

Fleur Maxwell: (Schindler’s List) 3s(X), 2a(X), 2a turn 2t, camel/sit/sit variation (similar to Kristen Sheaffer’s sit spin with her foot over her head)/back sit/back upright variation, straightline steps, 3t(X), 2s(X), 3’s into a 3loop (half a rotation short), 2z, RBO/RFO/RBO/back charlotte spiral sequence (none on the left foot), layback(5), flying camel(4), biellmann(4 – traveled). She looked on the verge of tears during the program.

Alexandra Tregre: (Harry Potter) layback(9), 3t(step out), 2a(turn out), 3s(X out), death drop into back sit(6), LFO/RFI/RBO catch foot, 2l, ftwk into 2z/1t, camel/sit/back cross foot sit spin into back cross foot upright spin, 3t, series of split jumps in opposing directions, 2f/2t, circular steps, 2z.

Adriana Desanctis: butterfly into back sit, big 3s, 3z, 2a, popped loop, 3f, layback(8), RFO/ina bauer/ right back spiral on the flat, diag steps, 3t, 3s turn 2t, camel/sit/layback/back sit/back upright cross foot spin.

Beril Bektas: popped lutz with turns into 2t (I think), 2f, 2s, 2f/2t, 2loop, 2a(only made 2 turns and came out forward), flying camel(5), spirals, layback(6), 2z, combination spin.

Alexandra Patterson: 2s, 3t/2t, 2a, flying camel (missed on the first try so she did it again – 5), 3z(X), RFI/RBO/LFO Kerrigan spiral, 3f, layback(6), 3t, split jump with turns into 2f and turns into a 2loop, stars into camel/layback/back camel/back sit.

Lane Walker: camel/layback/back sit, 2z, 3s(wrong foot landed on), 2a(X), flying sit (wobbled), split jump into layback (nice) right into reverse camel, jump?, walley into 2f?, BI spiral, 2loop ½ loop 2s, flying camel, jump sequence which ended with a 2t. *Note: this report on Lane came from Sylvia as I missed Lane.

Abigail Legg: camel/layback/back sit, 2z(turnout), 2a, 3loop(under-rotated and possibly 2ft?), LFO in ¾ of a circular pattern into a 2f, 3s(2ft?), layback(8), split with jump minor jumps into a 2f with the hands over the head, flying camel (4), 2a(big smile), ina bauer into death drop back sit/back scratch.

Lauren Gladney: layback(7), 2a, 3f(X), 3loop(fight), 3s(fight), flying camel(4), 2z/2l, LFO catch foot/outside spread eagle, LBO spiral, RBO spiral into 2a/2t, camel/layback/back sit/back spin with leg held, 3s(X), circ steps.

Christine Harmon: 2loop, 2a(2ft)/2t, 3z(2ft – was a good attempt), flying camel(5), 3loop(2ft)/2t, 2a(2ft), camel/layback (nice)/back sit, 3f(2ft), LFI to LFI change edge spiral/RBO catch foot spiral, 2z, 2s, layback with a decent position, nice scratch spin. A very nice refreshing program – a nice break from all the “screeching” violin pieces I’ve heard.

Lisa Dannemiller: layback(4)/back sit/back upright with leg held, 3t/2t, outside spread eagle to inside then into an ina bauer, 3s, great clockwise turns following the 3s, 2loop with turns into a 2f, 2a, flying camel(4), ftwk into 1z, LFI change of edge spiral to the LFO edge (great job! Perfectly matched to the music with great speed and depth of edge), 2t, final combination spin. A really nice program! The music suites her style perfectly - the love theme from "Spartacus."

Michelle Rosinski: 3s/2t, 3t(turn out)/2t(?), flying camel(7), diag steps, 3l(2ft then X), camel/sit/layback/back sit, LFO Kerrigan/RBO spirals into 2a(X), series of small jumps into 2t(step out), 2z, death drop(3), 2f, layback(8).

Junior Men’s Free Skate

Ben Blandford: 2a(3 turned out), 3t(X), 3s(X), fall on spin, serp steps, 1z, waved to friend in the stands, 1f, camel(fall out), fell out of another camel. The program was extremely sloppy.

Christopher Jones: 3s/2t, flying camel(4), 3t, 2l, 2a, 3s, camel/sit/leg held horizontal/back sit, 2f, 2z, butterfly? into back sit(5). A huge contrast between the first two skaters – Christopher was very pleasant to watch.

Scott Shelton: 3s?/2t, camel/camel(4/5), 2t/2t, 2z, camel/sit/back camel/back sit, 2f, 2a with a turn into a 2t, 2loop, circ steps, 2s, flying camel(8).

Josh Fischel: 2z(lots of speed), 2a(forward and hand down), camel/camel/sit variation(3/3/2), 1f, 3loop(X), flying camel(3), 3t(2ft with turn out), death drop(3), skid spiral, stars into butterfly, 2s, 2z, waxel, camel/back camel with a hop over to end.

Adam Aronowitz: (Rachmaninoff – not sure which piece though) 3f/2t, 3z, camel with a jump over into a flying camel, 2a, outside spread eagle into 3loop(X), death drop (8), RFI/RBO/LFO Y spiral, 3t/2t, 1t, 3s(X), RFI spiral, stars into camel/sit/back sit/back upright with leg held horizontal, back scratch.

Jordan Brauninger: 3f, 1z, 3loop, 3s, flying camel(3), back sit(4), nice edgy MITF in the middle, 3f/2t, camel/sit/back sit/back Galindo, 1z, LFO spiral into big split jump, 2a/3t (the triple toe wasn't originally planned on the end of the 2a), death drop into back sit(4)/back scratch, stars into butterfly into back scratch to end. A nice classical piece. His father told me the name of it, but I’m drawing a blank – it had something to do with an overture, lol.

Michael Peters: 3t/2t, 3z(high but a step out), 1a, death drop into back sit(5), running 3’s into a 2l, spirals, outside spread eagle, popped flip, camel/sit/back sit, circ steps, 2a, walley into 2z, split jump, sit spin, 3s(foot scrape on the landing), flying camel(3).

Ben Woolwine: (Rachmaninoff – not sure which piece, but I really like it) big 3z, 3t/3t(came out on wrong foot), camel/sit/back camel/back sit, 3f, 3s(had it then X), walley 3z(hand down) turn 2t, flying sit (4-5), 2a, forward spiral with a hop around loop (ok, that doesn’t make sense to me, but that’s what I wrote, lol), 2a, 2loop, final spin was a flying camel I think??? Anyway, the program was a nice program that he skated rather well. He and Jordan were closely matched here. Their skating is somewhat similar in that both have reasonably good flow across the ice and great spring on their jumps. Could have gone either way and it ended up being decided on a 4/3 split.

Jordan Miller: 3z(2ft, hands down)/2t, 3f(2ft?), 2a, barrel rolls, forward sit, RFO/RBO spiral, 3loop (step out), outside spread eagle to inside, 3s(2ft), popped f?, camel/sit/back sit, 3z, 2l, stars into flying camel(3)/back sit(7).

Luke Capizzo: 2a, flying sit(6), 3z(X out hands down), 3loop(X out hands down), fall on ftwk into boards in front of judges, 3t(X), flying camel(5), 3s, 3t(fight for the landing), circ steps, 3a, 3loop(X), step sequence, combo spin.

Senior Men’s Free Skate:

Joe Knazek: 2a, 3z(2ft)/2t, death drop(10), 2f, 3t(turn)/2t, sit/sit(5/5), outside spread eagle, 2loop, 3s, 2a with a turn into a 2t, flying camel(4 & ½), 2z, camel/sit/back sit/back upright variation.

Chris Mabee: 3loop(it came out of no where – no noticeable preparation into the jump: very nice), 1a (was to be a 3axel), flying camel(8 & ½), 3z(nice), 3s, 2t, camel with a hop over to back sit, 3f, LFO to LFI catch foot change of edge spiral/RBO spiral with leg in front then behind, 2loop to 2loop in other direction, 3z(X), death (5), lutz type entrance into a 2a – I think a counter entrance (X out), circ steps, camel/sit/sandhu/back sit/back scratch.

Kurt Fromknecht: camel(5 – outside edge), 3f, 3a attempt but ended up a 2a with a fall out, 3loop, camel/back camel/back sit/back cross foot, straightline steps, 3z(2ft and hand down – he did a very nice one in the warm up), flying camel(4), 3t, nice serp steps with barrel rolls, 3s, flying sit(4) to scratch. Nice, interesting program – very creative.

Jeff Franklin: 3f, 2a (I think it was supposed to be a triple and he ended up popping it, yet suspending it in the air drawing a gasp from the audience – slight 2ft on landing), 3z, spin, 3loop(double 3’s out of it), 3t, flying camel(5), series of ina bauer/spirals/small jumps all done well to the music, 3t/2t, 3s(X), death drop(3), camel/sit/upright spin/back sit/back upright. Skated to Prokofiev’s R&J first, then switched to Nina Roto’s “A Time for Us” and then to Tchiakovsky’s R&J I believe. Worked reasonably well together, the program had good choreography, and it was a pleasant skate to watch.

Rohene Ward: (Nesun Dorma – Vanessa Mae), illusion into gorgeous layback(12), 3t that I believe he was thinking about doing a quad, 3a/3t(a slight step out on the 3t), RFI catch foot spiral, reverse axel into 3s, 3f(hand down), flying camel(6), circ ftwk, 3loop, came/side sit, straightline ftwk with a slip coming around the end, 2a, RFO spiral, LBO Y spiral, 3z(bad X), camel/layback/back camel/back donut/back scratch.

Ben Miller: (Dark Eyes) he was wearing black pants and a gold shiny shirt with red accents on it, and black gloves. 3a(X), 3a (not in combination), flying camel(5)/back sit(8), ina bauer on the diag axis of the arena, 3f(flipped out of it), outside spread eagle to inside, 3z/3t, sit(5), slow straightline ftwk, 3loop, 3loop/2t, a poor butterfly into back sit spin, camel/sit/sandhu/back sit/back scratch. I have to admit I wasn’t particularly impressed and I wish he’d stay away from the Russian influences – I just don’t think they work well for his own skating. I have nothing against the Russian style, but it doesn’t work for him IMHO.

Matt Savoie: (Ragtime) edge camel(4), 1a, 3t, diag steps, 3s, stars into butterfly back sit(5), spread eagle into 3z/3t (close enough to the boards that I thought he’d just do a 3z, but he still went for the 3toe and was able to somehow pull it off without hitting the barrier. The crowd gasped and then applauded loudly and I could see Linda Branan jump as well), popped loop, flying camel(6), back shoot the duck up into a 3axel(X), 3f, camel/side sit/back camel/back sit/back Galindo/back scratch. I absolutely love the choice of music for him. I think it’s really going to be a great program for Matt once he’s trained it more and gets the jumps in there. Potentially the best program we’ve seen yet from Matt, but unfortunately the energy and attack just wasn’t there today. The crowd seemed to like the program and were clapping for him, trying to push him on. He was landing the triple axle/triple toe effortlessly in practice a day or two ago as well as in the warm up for the free skate. Same for all the other jumps and I’m told he landed 4 quads in one of the practice sessions either today or Friday.

Senior Ladies Free Skate

Jacqueline Pusztay: 3t(half short on rotation), layback, 1z, 2f turn 2t, 2loop, combo spin, 3s(under-rotated)/2t(X), spirals, 2f, 1z(X), flying camel(4)/back sit/back scratch.

Lindsey Weber: (Nesun Dorm by Vanessa Mae), very nice 3f/2t, 3z(2ft), layback(8), 3s(turn out), flying camel(6), 2a, circular steps, 3t/2t, 2z, RBO/RFO spirals, 2a/2t, camel/sit/back sit/back cross foot then a skid into a back scratch. A pretty good performance and she looked very happy with it.

Tugba Karademir: nice opening to her tango piece – it really grabs your attention, 3t(X), 3f(2ft and under-rotated), layback(10), 3s, ina bauer up to RFO spiral, back charlotte, 3s(turn out), camel/sandhu/back sit/back upright with leg held, straightline ftwk, 2a, back cross foot, flying camel (w/ change of edge to outside). I enjoyed her presentation. Her jumping isn’t particularly strong, but her musical expression, especially of this tango piece, was really quite good. If the jumps don’t come, I hope to see her ice dancing.

Jennifer Park: running 3’s into 3loop(3turned out), 3z(X), death drop immediately up into a Y-spin, walley/walley into 2s, biellmann (4), entered from a forward lunge & a few turns, LFO Kerrigan/RFO, waltz (was to be a 2axel), 2a, layback(4), 3t/2t (step out), 3f(X), serp steps, running 3’s into 3loop (2ft)/2t(X), camel/sit/back sit/then balance problems on the final part of the spin.

Kelsey Drewel: (The Red Violin) 2a, 2z, 3s, flying camel(7), 3t/2t, camel/sit/back sit, running 3’s into 2l, layback(10+), 2f, LFO/LBO/RBO spirals, ftwk, 2z, 3t, stars into butterfly back sit(5)/back scratch. A good step up from yesterday’s initial free skate and a huge step up from the short program. She seems to be getting her confidence back. Good for her to not let the past couple of days get to her and stop her from giving a good performance.

Danielle Lazenby: (Speed) camel(6), 3t(X), 2a(a little under-rotated), 3s, 2t, LFO/LBO into 2z, LFO Kerrigan, 2a(X), 2loop(hands over head with a step out of the landing), layback(11), 2z, 3t (turned out rather quickly from the landing)/2t, spin, ftwk 2f/2l, camel/sit/back sit.

Chanelle Sherry: 2a(2ft), 2l, camel(not great)/layback/back sit, 3s(2ft), 2z/2l, camel(4), 2t, layback(4), 2f, RFI to RFO/RBO/RFI, 2a (under-rotated a bit), 2f (or maybe it was a 2t?), flying camel.

Christine Semmler: 3’s into a 2s (or 2loop), 2f/2t, layback(11), 2loop, 2a, flying camel(5), LFO/LBO/RFI, split falling leaf with some taps into a 2t, 2z, camel/sit/layback/back camel/back sit, 2a(X), death drop into back sit(10/back scratch.

Mari Yamaguchi: 2z(shaky landing), 3t(X), 3s(X), layback, fall on ftwk, 2something, single loop, camel/sit/layback/back sit/back upright variation, outside to inside spread eagle, RFO catch foot, RBO spiral, single axel, layback(7), single flip, didn’t get air born on axel attempt – just a turn on the ice, final spin.

Halie Bojovic: 2z/2l, death drop(6), 3t(X), LFO Kerrigan, near fall on other spiral, 2s, 2loop, spin with a number of variation, ina bauer into single axel(2ft), 2z, combo spin, split jump into 2f, flying (I think) camel/back sit/back scratch.

Alissa Czisny: popped lutz/2t (lots of speed going into it), flying camel(8), 3t(X), single flip, death drop(7)/back Galindo(11), es(X), RFO/LBO spirals, running 3’s into 3loop (under-rotated quite a bit), layback (9), 2a turned into waltz, 3z(X), split/split/camel/layback/back sit/back Y spin. This might have possibly been the first time Alissa has landed the 3loop in competition, but go figure it happened on a day when every other triple failed her. Her spins I continue to be amazed by – they’re just absolutely wonderful.

Candice Gutmann: flying camel(3)/back sit(3), 2loop, 3t(X), 2z/2t, layback(6), single axel, 2f, 2s, flying sit(4), RBO Y, 2f, split, camel/sit/layback/back sit/back Y.

Thanks so much Aaron for the great reports! :D Sounds like Gardiner, Alissa Czisny, and Weber are the top sr ladies for Mids this year, despite Alissa's problems in this freeskate. It might end up being Drewel, Horstman, Katie Lee, Amber Czisny, Angie Lien, and a few others battling it out for that 4th spot. I'd hate to be a senior or junior lady at Mids this year! Too tough!

Nice to hear that Woolwine and Brauninger are looking so strong. McGraw, Abbott, Campbell, and Brinsmade, Uster, and Dafoe are all going to make Junior Men at Mids really tough.

Yay for Rohene winning, though I also like Matt Savoie. It's encouraging for some of these skaters like Rohene to at least know they have a prayer of beating national medalists when they skate their best. Hopefully Rohene will be able to stay this strong the rest of the season. I wonder if he will be given any internationals after this result.

And nice to hear that all the pairs are looking so great. Can't wait to see them on the GP and/or at Nationals.

The Detroit competition was well run, and had very good practice times and event times, with it all ending on Saturday, giving everyone a day to recover before going back to work/the rink.

The competitive highlight for me was Rohene Ward in Senior men.
I dont think many people understand the depth of his talent and ability. He can do a triple sal in both directions, and a double axel in both directions, layback spin variations that are world class ,triple axel combination jumps, AND he can do it all while engaging the audience with his style and artistic presentation. He is unique. He is not trying to copy Plushenko as one other skater so obviously tried, nor does he pander to the judges. When he skates, he is givng the audience the pure version of "Rohene skating" .
He got more audience support than any other skater in any other event, without question. The crowd was cheering, screaming, pounding their feet on the bleachers, applauding wildly...all ages, not just his friends, everyone! It is one thing to see a good skater, and it is another thing to see a skater perform from their heart, with unique technical and artistic abilities. He is only about 19 years old...with so much talent that hasnt even been developed yet...I believe he has the potential to become a superstar, plus, FINALLY an American skater that can dance!!! :D

I have seen glowing reports about Rohene for a couple of years now so I was most interested to see him at Nationals last year. He spent a lot of time stretching in the stands and talking to people and being supportive of other skaters. The stretching was impressive. On the ice he spent a lot of time on the presentation elements and occasionally working on the jumps. When it came to competition, I agree that he can dance and present but he simply could not produce technically and let's face it, the superstars of this sport must be able to jump. I'm glad to hear that he skated so well at Detroit. From the reports it sounds as though it was very exciting. I will reserve judgement until I see how well he can skate in competitions later in the year.

Potential is such a scary thing. How many actually produce?

Rohene *can* jump (he can land all the triples and a quad), its just a matter of consistency. At this point in the season, he really doesn't look that much *less* consistent with the jumps than Delmore and Bradley. I wouldn't call him dependable yet, but the previous poster was right on with her praise of his overall skating. Last year was his debut at senior nationals, so let's see what happens this year and next before we start denouncing Rohene as an artist without the jumps.....

Junior Men
I thought last years top 4 Junior Men(Brauniger, Ben Miller, Chris Mabee,Luke Mafazy) were a little more exciting to watch than this years performances. There was more variety in the programs last year.

Also, alot of disappointment for Jon Salway, Michael Peters, and Luke Mafazy this year as they didnt do their best. Mafazy told me he suffered a groin/hip injury that wont heal since May which has seriously curtailed his training, and Salway said he was ill all weekend.
Peters is an excellent skater but just couldnt get his jumps right this weekend, but he is practicing a nice strong triple axel and has alot of power like Salway.

Woolwine deserved to win the long program this year in my mind, because he has speed, flow and many good triples, and is beginning to develop his own style. Needs to improve his posture, or sustain it better throughout the program though.
Brauniger can be eletcric! But not this weekend. He was second in the long, first in the short.
Adam Aronowitz decided to show up! He was good, but not great. I think his strength is his ability to spin well centered, fast, and in unique and artistic positions. I think the midwest men are showing more power, and are experimenting more than the east coast this year! a tough bunch to beat!
Junior Ladies
:? What happens to all the tremendous little tigers that I see fighting and clawing their way through the ranks at the Juvenile/Intermediate levels?? They get older and become such predictable skaters, and so boring to watch! It is really a shame, because all of these skaters work very hard and dedicate all their free time to skating, yet,the typical junior/senior lady lacks the spark she had when she was young!! It is bizarre. The bleachers are never packed for their events, the skaters dont seem to do more than just skate for the judges, and the audience is disconnected from the event in general(unless it is a family member).
Pairs
Junior Pairs were very rough...looked like Novice to me.

Novice Pairs
Love the chemistry of Samantha and Cole !
I love it because it looks like a fiesty, fun partnership.
A smart choreographer who doesnt force them to do psuedo romantic stuff that does not reflect their style/partnership/energy.

Senior Pairs
Marci Hinzman has more natural grace than Danielle had, so it combines
nicely with Steve's masculine style and creates a needed counterpoint. It is nice to see he has slimmed down considerably and he flowed more. I will miss Hartsell-Hartsell, but this is a new team that has something special already!!!!

I'm blanking on the Int. Men final results. I *think* Frank Huber won. Zach Dewulf might possibly have been 2nd (but don't hold me to that  ). Victor Travis & Wlm. Brewster rounded out the top four.

NiceIce, I don't know who you are but I agree with a lot of what you say -- except I thought jr. pairs was a good event. I liked the A2 pair.

And add me to the Ro-hene, Ro-hene, Ro-hene cheerleading squad.

I have to agree with Nice Ice...Hinzmann and Hartsell lookd great togther. I loved their program and as very impressed with how good they looked after only six weeks working together! This program will only get that much better with time and it's already beautiful. It'll be exciting to see how well they do ths year.

I was really hoping someone had watched the little juvenile girls' final round. We were wondering what the EGL region might be looking like this year. Any jr. national level skaters? double axel or triples? Any baby ballerinas to look out for in the next few years?

In Juvenile girls there were double axels that were clean, and several that were two footed.
Great spins too.
Some very talented girls, doing difficult and entertaining programs.

Thanks Aaron, I really appreciate all the posting you do for us, who can't make these events. You really make me feel like I am right there, with all your excellent notes.
