Hey Everybody!
Well, I guess this isn't really an "article" but sasha recently posted in her journal and wrote an entry about practicing her quad.
I Thought it was interesting... I've been lucky enough to see a lot of senior men land quads and quad triple combos in person, but I've never seen a lady do it... its on my to do list :)

Enjoy!

Which one is she practicing, though? She just calls it 'the quad' like there's only one...

probably the salchow, since that's what she has mentioned in the past.

We have a Sr. lady in my club who is working on a quad. She's landed it a couple of times in practice. I saw a film clip of it -- it was really something to see! 8O

Wow! It is amazing the levels of athletisism in figure skating these days.

Oh wow! I hope she can get it soon. Or has she already got it?

It's not the most perfect but she's done them perfectly before. Tim Goebel has said so himself. I think he said something like "she's landed quads just as good as me" or something to that nature.

YES! I am excited. I am psyched! *jumping up and down, stomping my feet, and feeling the Sasha Cohen beat*!!!!!
This is wonderful news. Just as I have been predicting.......Sasha will land the quad and 3/3's this season. She is going to just B-L-O-W the competition away!
It's time for Sasha to make history. First lady (American) to land the quad. Take that!

I wouldn't mind seeing her quad. But I'd rather see her put in 2 clean performances in one competition without flaking out.
(I've also seen her improve her back Sasha spiral (or whatever it might be called): It's the move that starts as a RBO (right back outside) spiral, but then she morphs it by opening up and reaching her left leg up to the ceiling:

Look for even better extension and better arm movement!)

She said she'd see how it went with the quad, not that she'd put it in for sure. Don't get too ahead of yourself there. IF, let's say 05-06 season, she were to plan it, she could only do 4 triples separate triples, the quad, and the 3/3. If Sasha has any sense at all, she'd at least plan a reasonably difficult 3/3 next season like the lutz/toe or something(or maybe flip rather since she flutzes). Maybe she could practice a flip/loop to compensate. Either way, the only way she's going to B-L-O-W the competition away is if she's clean and actually LANDS these things. If that happens, then yeah, she will be even tougher to beat considering the points she gets for her elements.
And Miki tends to underrotate her quad sometimes so she might not get credit for it under CoP. We'll have to see. If Sasha lands it and fully rotates it(barring Miki underrotates it and it's only counted as a triple), she may be the first woman credited for the quad under CoP because Sasha is not known to have an underrotation problem.

I have such mixed feelings about the quad...I would love to see Sasha land it and keep the beauty in her skating (and land all of her jumps be clean) BUT, I really hate the quad for all skaters...The toll it has taken on a whole generation of men is now going to be reflected in the women. As it is, the jumping is hurting skaters (look at Tara and Naiomi Nari Nam). Half of the time when I am watching (especially on tv but even in person), I can't tell the difference (unless Yags or Plushy lands them). Sasha has SOOOO much going for her. I would hate to see her get sidetracked by the quad.

I, too, have mixed feelings about quads, not only about the stress on the body, but what it will do in figure skating in general. There are so many women who compete in the senior levels who have cheated triples, or cannot land 3/3 combos. Pushing the sport further and making people do quads to be competitive. When there are few people who can land clean triples, the quality of skating almost has to go down when those same people have to start trying quads. I think that those who are talented enough to to do the quads are absolutely amazing... but right now, I think that it's just pushing the sport too far.

I think it's more pushing yourself rather than the sport. I wouldn't want to scale back on my abilities or my potential because everybody else can't catch up. There is only one gold and if I can do everything I need to do to get it, and am motivated to do it, I would want to all the way. If you underrotate, you have to learn how to pace yourself and make it stop. Skating is a risk period. I would think that 3/3s take more of a toll on the body(with the jump then abrupt stop then jump then abrupt stop) than an extra revolution in a jump(though that could take a toll too). Your scores should show what that is what you need to do.
