Group C

Missed the first girls name: 2t/1t, 2a(under-rotated and turn out), flying camel, 2z, layback(6), RBO Y spiral, 2loop, 2f(hand down), back charlotte, 2z, camel/layback/back sit/back Y, back cross foot.

Emily Leckwatch: 2a(X), 2t/2t, camel/layback (traveled but decent position)/back sit, 2f(x), 2z, straightline ftwk, 1a, flying camel(6), 2loop(X), LFO/LBO spirals, 2s(X), 1f? turn into 2t, layback(10) decent position.

Linsey Stucks: 2a(nice), 3s/2t, 3t/2t, flying camel(2), back sit(3), 2z/2t/2l (nice), 2l, camel/sit/upright variation/back sit, 1s, 2f, 2a(2ft), butterfly into back sit/back Y. Nice job! The first for jumps and combinations were really nice!

Jessica Saban: 2a(2ft?), 2f, camel/sit/layback/back camel/back sit, 2t turn 2t, LFO/LBO/ina bauer/3s into 2loop, layback(6), 2s, death drop(5), 2a(2ft)/2t, 2z(X), flying camel(4).

Alexandra Patterson: 2s, 3t/2t, 2a (a little under-rotated), flying camel(5), 3fz(X), RFI/RBO/LFO Kerrigan spiral, 3f(stiff knee but clean), layback(5?), 3t, split flip with turn into 2f then turns into 2loop, straightline ftwk, stars into camel/layback/back camel/back sit.

Lea Nightwalker: (The Red Violin and other selections) camel(3)/back camel(4), ina bauer into 2s, layback(9), 3t(X), 2a(2ft and turn out), 2t, LFO spiral diagonally from corner to corner, flying camel (nice), 2loop, 2a(2ft and hand down), 2f, 2z, camel/sit/layback/back sit/back upright with leg held.

She looks like she's grown since the summer of 2001 when I last saw her. I'm guessing that's what's troubling her at the moment. I certainly wish her luck in the future.

Ashley Kristich: 2f, 2a/2t (slight 2ft on toe?), 2s, flying camel(8), walley with turns into 2t, LBO Kerrigan spiral/RFO/RBO inverted spiral, layback(6), ina bauer, 2z/2t, 2a(2ft), diag steps, had a slip while skating around the corner coming out of her ftwk, combo spin.

Lauran Gladley: layback(10), 2a, 2f, 3loop(fought for landing, probably 2ft?), 3s(2ft?/2t, flying camel, 2z/2l, LFO with leg held, balance slip on outside spread, LBO/RBO into 2a, weak combo spin (slow & traveled), 2l, camel/sit.

Lisa Dannemiller: layback(6)/back sit(2)/back upright with leg held(3?), 3t/2t, spread eagle, 3s(X), 2loop with turns into2f, 2a(slight 2ft), flying camel(4), 2z, LFI to LFO spiral with great speed and placement to music, 3t(2ft and a little rough), camel/back camel/back sit/back Y. She has nice power and good stroking. A very comfortable skater to watch.

Adriana Desanctis: butterfly into back sit(6), 1s, 3z(X), waxel(2ft), 3loop(X out, hands down), 1f, layback (10), RFO into ina bauer/Rbflat, diag steps, 3t(X), 3s(hand down)/turn 2t, combo spin.

Jr. Pairs Short

Harkaway & Larcom: (Legends of the Fall): lift (3 turns I believe), pair spin(4?/5), 2z, throw 2loop, sbs flying camel into back sit(8 total revs; nice unison), split 2twist, serpentine spirals (a little slow and shallow), RFI death spiral.

Castile & Okolski: pair spin(4/4?), 2 turns on lift, split 2twist, throw 2l with good height, 2z(unison off a bit), camel into sit (unison off), serp spirals a little shallow, RFI death spiral.

I placed H&L first and C&O second, although I thought it was pretty close. With the unison problems on some of C&O's elements as well as the greater sbs spin difficulty from H&L (they did flying sbs spins). Both were pretty good.

Novice Pairs Short

Skavdahl & Davis: 2 & ½ turns on standard overhead, split 2tw (nice to see him on one foot immediately on the catch and set down), good centering and speed on pair spin, ftwk into 2z, circ ftwk, sbs spin with good unison - flying camel(6)/back sit(5), RFI death spiral. They were easily the class of the field here. I really like the team,s posture, clean lines, & reasonably good speed.

Glassberg & Hanson: pair spin(he off center and had to put foot down, as a result only getting 2-3 turns in), high split 2twist, 2z (a little off unison), camel into sit, straightline ftwk, lift with 2 & ½ turns and twist dismount. RFI death spiral.

Best & Best; split twist, sbs 2z (he was a little rough), camel into sit(off unison), lift (1 turn), RFI death spiral, straightline ftwk, off balance end to combo spin.

Junior Men's Short Program:

John Salway: sit/sit(5/6), turns into 3t(X)/2t, diag steps, flying camel(5), steps into 2z, bad hook on camel in combo spin; camel/sit/back sit/back scratch, spread eagle into popped axel(X). He was to end the program immediately after this element, but with the fall he finished a bit behind, although all the elements were in on time I believe. I still think he's a powerful jumper; just not able to control the power quite yet. Presentation needs work, but that will come with time hopefully.

Jordan Brauninger: sit/sit(6/7), 3f/3t, 2a that he went off the back of his blade and was crooked in the air yet was able to land the jump with little extra effort, flying camel(9; a little more arch would give the spin a better look), serp ftwk, ftwk into 3z(hand down), circular ftwk (I'm not sure the circle was closed off and it seemed a bit shallow), combo spin. I've enjoyed Jordan since I first saw him two years ago here at Skate Detroit and he's definitely improved in that time. As for today, this is just a personal thing, but the music isn't exactly my favorite, but if he likes it and enjoys it, that's what matters. I just thought it was a little too "straight pitched" (i.e. it was a little shrill, but it could just be the speaker system at the DSC). His actual skating looks fine though. Oh, and he's sporting a new hair cut; looks much better IMO. Good luck on the JGP!

Luke Mafazy: spread eagle and spirals into 2a(X), 3loop(hand down)/1loop, camel/sit/back sit, back scratch, ftwk into 2z, nice serp ftwk, sit/sit(6/6), diag steps, flying camel turned to a catch leg(7). I've always enjoyed his deep knees.

Jordan Miller: ftwk with pause into 3z, circular ftwk, 3f(2ft)/2t, sit/sit(6/6), serp ftwk(not particularly interesting), camel/sit/back camel/back sit (I didn't notice any real upright position), 2a(X), flying camel(9).

Luke Capizzo: 3loop with double 3’s into 2l(2ft), ftwk into 3z(looked 2footed to me; he gave a fist pump when he landed it as he was very happy), camel/sit/upright variation/back camel/back sit/back sit variation/back scratch, 2a, sit/sit(10/8); nice, diag steps, circular ftwk in clockwise direction with good turns in both directions, flying camel(7).

Adam Aranowitz: (American Beauty) circ steps, 3f(X), flying camel(7; tried donut but couldn't get hold and came out a turn to early), spread eagle into 2a(landing edge was wrong, but was still a completed element), ftwk into 3z(2ft? and turn out), camel/sit/back sit/back upright, sit/sit(6/7).

Ben Blandford: ftwk into 2z(lean), camel/sit/back sit/back upright that had maybe one rotation, turns into 3t(X), flying camel(fell right out after 1), 2a(X), circ steps, sit/sit(4/3).

Ben Woolwin: ftwk into 3z, 3f(turn out but stayed on one foot)/2t, diag steps, flying camel(8), 2a, camel/sit/back sit/back upright variation, circ steps in which he lost his balance near the end and had to put his hand to the ice (still was able to close off the circle though), sit/sit(6/7). Overall a decent skate. Hopefully he can skate well at Sectionals this year!

Christopher Jones: 3s(X out)/2t, sit/sit (6/7), ftwk into 2z, diag steps, 2a, flying camel(7 or 8?), circ steps, stars into combo with an off balance moment on the camel.

Josh Fischel: flying camel(6), 2a(2ft and X out), circ steps, sit/sit(6/5), straightline ftwk not quite to the barrier, ftwk into 2z, 3loop (2ft and turn out?), weak combo spin.

Michael Peters: 2t turn 3t(2ft X), sit/sit(6/6), diag steps, steps into 3z(X), camel/sit/upright/back camel/back sit/back scratch, 2a, circ steps with lots of turns clockwise against the overall pattern, flying camel(7 or 8).

Scott Shelton: 2a(only 2 turns; landed on wrong foot), flying camel(8), 3t(X), sit/sit(7/10), diag steps, step with pause into 2z, shallow and not closed off (?)circ steps, camel/sit/upright with leg held, back camel/back sit/back scratch.

Senior Pairs Short

Roth & McPherson: 3t(she had a 2ft, but it was a good attempt; not crooked or tilted), split 2twist (would be nice if he'd switch to one foot more quickly), throw 3s(turn out), 2 or 2 & ½ turns on lift, sbs spins camel/back sit nearly off unison in the end, circ spirals, death spiral. Pair spin in there somewhere but I didn't mark it down. Overall, I thought they looked ok. They look well enough along that I think they can be ready for the GP in 3 months. Just little mistakes here and there, nothing big. Kristen Roth has definitely grown since we last saw her. She looks taller and has filled out a bit; pretty normal for her age. Doesn't need to lose any weight or anything like that, just needs to continue to adjust.

Hinzmann & Hartsell: sbs 3t (off unison but very clean), split 2twist was nice, throw 3s (Marcy may have just briefly touched her hand down; it was pretty close and overall the element was performed quite well), combination spin that was fairly smooth in it's transitions, especially for a new team, sbs spins had great unison; camel/sit/back sit, circ spiral sequence, lift with 3turns and she in a layover star position with a switch to one hand, RFI death spiral. I was quite impressed with how well they skated considering how new they are. The unison was pretty good throughout the program except on the sbs jump. Marcy seems to be bringing out a softer side in Steve's skating as they presented their program to "Funeral for a Friend" with a softness. The crowd seemed to be buzzing about their performance after the event; they definitely were the "wow" team in this event.

Totmianina & Marinin: pair spin was nice, circ spirals, throw 3l, sbs 3t, sbs spins camel/upright variation/back camel/back leg catch(6/6), split 2twist, 3 turns in the lift (he was a little noisier than I would expect from the World silver medalists), RFI death spiral. They were showing more expression with their faces today; was nice to see her smiling and getting into the program a bit.

Rogeness & Rogeness: split 2twist, throw 3s(2ft and turn out), sbs 2s, RFI death spiral, camel/sit/back sit(6/6), rought lift didn't cover much ice, circ spirals, pair spin (5/4). Hopefully the coaches at the DSC can help them become a better team; they definitely looked rough but I expect they'll get better with more time here in Detroit.

Spielberg & Joeright: A tango piece with him in tux pants, white shirt, and bow tie left untied and she in a red dress that looked great on her, 3t (he clean, she opened up and had a rather hard fall), split 2twist (very light) directly and immediately into a throw 3loop (she may have put her hand down, but overall it was a good attempt), nice lift with quick and smooth turns (3 of them) on his part and a flip over dismount, camel/sit/back sit(7/6), RFI death spiral, circ spiral, combo spin. Other than the bad attempt on the 3toe by Larissa, everything else looked great.

I can understand the judges possibly going with S&J over H&H, but I sided with the majority who put H&H ahead of S&J. The rough fall on the sbs jumps and the slight touch down on the throw were just too much IMO to have them ahead of the nearly clean H&H.

Senior Ladies Free Skate Initial Round
Group A

I completely missed the entire group except the last 2 skaters; the last one being Jennifer Park. She skated quite well. Running 3s into 3l, popped lutz, death drop into catch foot Y type spin, walleys into 3s/2t, layback(6), LFO Kerrigan into RFO spiral, 2axels back to back and then into a biellman(4), 3t, 2f, serp steps, running 3s into 3l(looked 2footed and wasn't in combination so she won't get credit for it), camel/sit/back sit with good speed. Skated to Pearl Harbor.

Group B
Lindsey Weber: (Nesun Dorma) 3f(hand down), 3z(2ft), layback(8), popped salchow, flying camel(5), 2loop, 3t/2t/2l, 3s(fought for the landing, but it was clean), RBO/LFO spirals, 2a/2t, camel/sit/back sit/back cross foot, back scratch. Her short program and free skate music this season is the same as what Sarah Hughes used in the 2000 season; with maybe a slight change in the editing of the free skate piece. A fairly good skate and she seemed happy with it.

Danielle Lazenby: camel(6), 3t(X), 2a(turn out), 3s, 2t, LFO/LBO, 2z, LFO Kerr, 2a(1/2; ¼ turn cheat), 2loop (present arms), layback(4), 2z/2l, 2loop ½ loop turn 2t, flying camel, 2f, camel/layback/back camel/back sit/back scratch.

Alissa Czisny: 3z/2t, flying camel(8; perfect spot on the blade for the spin), 3t(low back but clean), 3f(2ft?), death drop back sit(7) to upright leg position (9 - aka Cohen), LBO charlotte, 3s/2t, RFO/LBO, running 3s into single loop, wonderful layback into a biellman spin, 2a, 2z, split, camel/layback/back sit/back Y spin. She really is a wonderful spinner; completely has mastered the art of spinning, staying centered perfectly and with great speed. It's wonderful to watch her blade and see it stay so perfectly in one spot the entire time with no fluctuation whatsoever.

Kelsey Drewel: single axel, 3z(X), 2s, flying camel(7), 2t, camel/sit/back sit/back upright with leg held horizontally, runnings 3s into 3l(2ft and fight for the landing), layback, 2f, LFO/LBO/RBO, 2z, 3t, butterfly into back sit/back scratch. It's still not what she's capable of, but it's certainly a step up from the short program and because of that, you could see she was satisfied with it which obviously is the most important thing.

I'll try to get the other senior ladies typed up eventually, but I really need to get to bed so that I can be to the rink on time for the free skate events tomorrow.

Aaron, I don't know how you do this reporting. It is so detailed and appreciated. I particularly enjoyed your comments on the pairs! Thanks.
