(I borrowed this topic from a gymnastics discussion board)

What's the tiniest detail you've noticed only because you've watched skating tapes WAY too much?

On the other forum this was usually something happening in the audience, but it can also be a coach's or fellow competitor's reaction or expression, or just something funny and unscripted off the ice but on camera. I'll provide some examples to get us all started:

At the 1990 Nationals, during Paul Wylie's LP, near the end he does a nice triple Lutz, and a woman in the stands jumps out of her seat very excitedly. Her husband seems to be looking at her saying "Calm down, we're on national TV."

Also at 90 Nationals, after Jill Trenary finishes her LP, Renee Roca tries to hug everyone in the kiss and cry but has to dodge in front of the camera to do it. Donna Devarona interviews Jill Trenary and at the end says congratulations or something and instead of thanking her, Jill just gives her a look like "Will you go away now?" and then looks in the camera and says hi to friends

At 91 Nationals, in her LP Tonya Harding does her triple Salchow double toe and goes into a combo spin. Two little girls are in the front row clapping and getting into "Wild Thing". Tonya finishes her LP and one man in the front row stands up and starts clapping like a seal before the music actually ends.

At 96 Nationals, after Rudy Galindo's LP the camera pans the audience and one older gentleman turns around to another man in the audience, who smiles back and raises his eyebrows.

At 92 Olympics, after Surya Bonaly's SP in the kiss and cry, Didier Gaillaghet rudely shushes away one of the flower sweeping kids because he's in between Didier and the score monitor.

Anyone have any others? I was laughing my a$$ off on the other thread, and would love to know of any other gems waiting to be discovered in my tape collection.

When Jamie and David came off the ice after Love Story at the Olympics, if you read her lips and listen very carefullly you hear her remark almost to herself (a million cameras on her) "I'm sweating like a pig." I should look at the tape again and I could tell you exactly where/when this happens.

Good thread. I love these little details. I'll try to think of others.

Lol about Jamie Sale! I'm gonna have to watch that now.

In the 1994 Olympics, after Torvill & Dean finished their FD and bows and were skating towards the door to leave the ice, they were waving to the audience ahead of them, and then Chris lowered his arm and gave a small wave to someone on his right, like saying "hi", and Grishuk then skated out from that exact place.

In 2001 Worlds, Plushenko stayed in the kiss n cry with Mishin after his LP scores, and watched Todd Eldredge's skate. You can see Plushenko applauding him when he lands jumps etc :) Surya Bonaly stayed back to watch Tara Lipinski's LP in 1998 Olympics, too.

Canadian Nationals 2003:

At the end of Emanuel's LP he tries a quad just before the SL footwork. After he fell, this woman in the front row leans forward and to me it looks like she yells at Emanuel. I don't if what she said was good or bad.

Love the topic. Will have to think of some. For the moment my contribution is:

I always liked Olga Markova's reaction in the kiss and cry after her LP at the 94 Euros. She was kissing her coach and then they both look up at the marks and have a laugh about the 5.9 one of the judges gave her for presentation.

Does anyone remember the blow up doll that Filonenko and Marchenko got at the 98 Olympics after their LP?

How could I forget... here's a detail that yours truly has starred in. At the 2003 World Championships, Carolina Kostner bumps into the boards on a triple Lutz. On the replay, after she bumps into the boards and skates off, you can see me on the outside of the boards in my red volunteer's vest placing my arms to my chest in dramatic fashion. I was gasping because it was my job to make sure the exit door was locked after each performance, and I was afraid of Carolina tumbling through the door if I hadn't locked it properly.

Go check it out!

After Lu Chen finished her "Within You/Without You" program, the female commentator described it first as a Beatles medley, then as a John Lennon/Paul McCartney composition!A medley is where you take sections of two or more songs, and string them together, and that musical piece was just one song from start to finish.Plus it was written by George Harrison! As the late Beatle would put it:"How daft!".

That precious moment with Jamie Sale is actually not just after they get off the ice but later, after Shen & Zhao's long and as they are getting ready for the medals ceremony and the controversy is starting to swirl. She and David are both on screen and she's plucking at her armpit and that's when she says it, perfectly clearly.

Looking for that moment was a nice excuse to enjoy their Love Story again.

In general, I tend to notice tiny things like people in the crowd and I might notice something as small as a strand of someone's hair.

The first detail that comes to my mind is Doug Ladret warming up in the background during G&G's 1988 Olympic SP (he and Tuffy skated right after Katia and Sergei).

I also remember a remark from Peggy Fleming while G&G were doing their back outside death spiral during their 1988 Olympic LP: "That would be such a pretty move if she'd only point her toe!" I always thought that comment was a little too nit-picky considering that program was skated about as perfectly as you can get! Thank goodness for the commentary-free version of this program on "My Sergei!" :P

Liz Manley and Christine Hough excitedly hugging Kurt Browning after his 1988 Worlds LP (it happens so fast on the tape, I wouldn't be able to identify the people Kurt's hugging if there wasn't a photo in his autobiography!)

The look on Christine Hough's face when Phillippe Candeloro practically fell on her lap at the end of his infamous "George of the Jungle" routine at the 2001 competition formerly known as World Pros. She was one of the judges at the event and I still feel sorry for her every time I watch this moment!

A cute moment during the 1998 Olympics ladies medal ceremony where one of the skaters (Lulu, I think) is facing the wrong end of the podium and the other two had to tell her to turn around the right way. Unfortunately, I don't think this was shown on US TV.

You just reminded me of a similar moment - in the same competition, 98 Olympics. It was in the pairs medal ceremony, and it was just as they were about to play the national anthem for K&D. The skaters had to turn to face the side, to see the flags, but Elena Berezhnaya (on the step behind K&D, as they got silver), couldn't see anything over Dmitriev because she was so small, especially being on the lower step. B&S had to ask him to move to the side slightly so she could see, and they all giggled. :)

I always remember once when Kyoko was still skating with Jason Dungjent ... they were going to their starting positions for thier long program at US Nationals and Jason faced the wrong way. Kyoko then taps him on the shoulder and motions to him that it's the other way and Jason just laughed and gave one of those "I'm an idiot" looks and the whole audience giggled. I thinkt hey went on to skate a perfect free.

I remember sometime during the winter of 2002 or 2003, I saw a Hallmark (I think) skating program in which Yuka Sato and Jason Dungjen skated a pairs number together. During a pairs spiral, he kissed her neck very spontaneously, it seemed. It was so sweet and romantic.
