JUNIOR PAIRS

missed the jumps for Smith/Chitwood, came in halfway through their performance, the end featured some lifts and spins that were of OK quality.

Yount/Marron followed with a slow but fairly solid skate. Did throw 3s, 2twist, sbs 2f, throw 2 something. All lifts and spins were ok but could improve, everything was pretty slow at this point. Footwork needs more lift and speed, was somewhat groggy. Very nice spirals, though. Death spiral leg was sticking straight up, and a turned out position would be nicer.

Miller/Brubaker had an up and down skate with a decent attempt at a 3twist (low), a gorgeous throw 3salchow, 2ax into 2t, sbs 2s, a breezy lift, and some nice choreography, spirals nice, footwork good. About halfway through, the performance fell apart. A throw was popped, side by spins very unstable and short of rotation, an aborted lift, and a wipeout on a death spiral (more like a death throw). :/ This is very early in the season, and this pair has the ingredients for greatness as evidenced by the first 2 minutes of this freeskate (in addition to last year's good results). Good speed, very nice look and program. I look forward to seeing what they can do later in the season.

NOVICE MEN

Roger Corvasce rocked. Great spinner, reminiscent of Lambiel. Landed 2 2axels, 2 3toes, and a 3sal. And a slew of doubles. Great footwork too, he definitely won. The rest had some problems but i'll note them a little later.

***I apologize for any jump ID errors. Feel free to correct me.

NOVICE LADIES- I'll put in order of my guess at placements...

1. Jenna Yount- 2z-2t, 3s turnout, 2ax, 2f, 2ax to 2r, 2f. Great spins, spirals, and footwork. Great haunting/Enya type music that I've heard before in skating. She has some special Tonia Kwiatkowski-like qualities in her skating. It was a very *up* performance.
2. Stricker- 2ax-2t, 3t, 2f-2t, 2r, fall on 3s, 2r, 2ax, 2z turnout. Spin good. Aranjuez was the music.
3. Fairchild- 2f-2t, 3s, 2f, 2ax-2t, 3r (cht), 2r-2r, 2ax. Layback to sit very good. Bug to pancake spin great and fast. Good camel, fall on spin entry to final combo spin but got up and did it (well, some of it anyway). Good skate, music is Carmen.
4. A. Smith- fall on 3z, 3r (turnout), 2f (turnout), 2ax, 3sal (some error), 2ax-2t, 2r. Nice fast camel. Layback great to catch foot very fast. Good spirals, fabulous spins all the way through, great job.
5. Bullock- webcast cut out on the beginning of her skate, but the end looked good... had a 2r, 2z, 2ax, 2f. Cool footwork section, good split, nice skate to Spiderman.
6. Endow- 3t?, 3t (2ft)-2t fall, 3s-2t, 2ax (fallout), 2r, 2r? fall, 3s fall, 1ax fallout. Off balance on most jumps. Not much coverage of ice, and overall a little jump-focused, it seemed. Great layback.
7. McGinty- 2f-2t, fall on 2ax, 2z-2t, 2s, 2t, 2z. Very good spins.
8. Pontarelli- 2ax (2foot), 3t?-2t?, 2z-2r, tano 2z, 2f, 2s. Mistake on flying spin. Layback could improve. Good fly camel to catchfoot.
9. Schrader- 2z (fallout), fall on 2ax, 2f, 2r, 1ax, 2z-2t, layback very nice, spins ok.
10. C. Davis- 2ax (stepout), falls on 3t and 3s, 2f-2t, 2r, waxel, 2f-2t. Spins ok. Music was Robin Hood.
11. Kleppe- 2z-2r, 2f-2t turnout, fall on 2ax, 2s, 2r-2r, 2f, nice jumpover to sit, very low hydroblade move, spins and footwork ok.
12. Hatch- a few good doubles, 2ax 2footed, 3s (cheat and fallout)-2t. West Side Story.
13. Beecher- a few good doubles, spins ok, nice speed in skating.
14. Stevenson- a good 2r-2r combo, spins ok
15. Grant- a few doubles, nice 2t-2t combo, jumps could use more height.

JUNIOR MEN (in my order of guessed placements)
1. Casey McCraw- 3ax, 3t, 3z-3t (turnout), 3r, 3f (fall), 3s. Footwork good, all spins could use more speed and oomph, though the end spin was nice. Impressive jumps. Music was Peer Gynt. To be honest, I'm not so crazy about this music, it seems kind of silly or something. Guess I've seen it in too many cartoons...his music started sticking after the first 3t and they had to stop and restart.

2. Jeremy Abbott- 3z-3t (fallout), 1ax, 2f, 3ax, 3s, 2s-3t fall, 2ax. Techno music. Camel and flysit spin great, stylish and original. I have always loved this skater- he really has something special- musicality, excitement, and quality.

3. Christopher Darling- 1ax, 3t-2t, 3s, 3t?-2t, tano 2z, 3r, 2f, 2ax. Flysit good. A little too much arm-flinging for my taste. The music and choreography didn't really add up for me with this performance, but perhaps it's just too early and hasn't really come together yet. Footwork nice, good split, end spin slowed. Pretty solid skate.

4. Jon Nuss- 1z, 3f (fall), 3t-2t, 1z, 2r, 3s (fall) 3t (fall), 1ax. Great coverage and speed, fall on difficult footwork, but 2nd section was great. Very good camel spin. Suspense movie soundtrack that I liked, lots of good qualities in this guy, bummer about the jumps.

Al Zubi, Vickers, and Berg were basically a 3way tie for me. They each had a clean 2axel and some flawed triple attempts, some doubles, nice spins...

SENIOR MEN

2. Ryan Bradley- 3ax, 2ax? 3z-2t, 1ax, 3r, 3f, 3t, 3s (hand down). Untouchables. Good footwork. He looks more man-like now, I like the ponytail actually. I think there's some maturity and sincerity developing, it's nice to see.

1. Rohene Ward- fall on 3ax, 3t-3t, 2r, 3z (fallout), 2f, 1ax, fall on 3s. Gorgeous spirals, layback, spins. Saxaphone/dramatic music. Ended early, I don't think the ending has been fully worked out yet, really dropped off after the spin. Some really touching moments in this program.

Apparently Rohene won with one triple. Don't ask me how this happened.
The others didn't have much for clean triples...though Hatfield got a couple good ones in the beginning of his program.

NOVICE PAIRS- in order of my guessed placements

1. Davis/Miller- 2twist, throw 2s good, sbs 2axels great, 2f to 2t?, throw 2r. Arabic music. Good lifts, great speed, very nice death spiral, good spins in unison. Playful step sequence with some nice difficult, pair spin ok. Great choreography, very strong skate! Congratulations to them.

2. Moore/Girardi- 2twist, throw 2sal fall, 2z stumble stepout-2t, 2f (singled?), throw 2r, pair spin, SBS camels in and out of unison, good lift, good unison all through. death spiral good. Pretty solid pair.

3. Syme/Pfoh- 2twist, throw 1ax, 1ax-2t fall, throw 2sal, sbs 2r (turnout/fallout). Lifts could use more coverage and speed. Nice death spiral, pair spin good. SBS spins in and out of unison. Good ending choreography.

I can't figure where B/Anders and O/Sullivan would place. B/ Anders had a nice fast layback by her, him skating around, some problems on spins later, 2 twist, throw 2s, a few problems on jumps. O/Sullivan had mostly single jumps and throws, but less failed elements. It's still early in the season...

INTERMEDIATE MEN
The webcast coverage was coming in and out, but I did get to see Zahradnicek, who probably won. He landed 3s, 2ax-2r, 2f, 2r-2r, 3t-3t (cht), 2s, 2ax, 2? Fly sit good, nice split, camel to sit spin. Solid performance to Todd Music. 1492 maybe?

SENIOR LADIES FS (guessed placements, any of the top 3 would be justified with the win, all were strong)

1. Erica Archambault- fall on 3s, 3t-2t, 2z, 2r, 2f, 2ax. Great flow, good spins, amazing layback. Good quality skating to Scheherezade.

2. Tiffany Vise- 2f-2t, 2ax, 2f, fall on 3s, 3t, 2z, 2s shaky. Very fast skating, good footwrk, nice layback. Gorgeous upright cross leg spin, also really nice catchfoot spin. Spiral to catch again nice, great final spin. This program was complete and inspiring, the highlight of the competition for me. The music, Prince of Egypt, is great too.

3. Olivia Olsen- 3t-2t, 2ax, fall on 3t, 3t, 2f-2t, 3r (cheat), 2t, 2z-2t. Paint it Black was music. Very nice spins, good combination spin. I didn't note other elements, I was a little distracted. Based on her jump content, I wouldn't be surprised if she won the whole thing, and it would be justified too. But she skated 2nd on the night, so it's hard to say what the judges did.

4. Karleen Armstrong- 3s-2t, 3t (cheat), 2r-2r, 1ax, fall on 3s, 2f. Nice fast camel. Nice spirals, she really moves out there, good speed. Great layback, fast footwork, good combo spin to end. Pretty piano music. She's developed a nice mature and stylish presentation.

5. Ashlee Homan- fall on 3t?, 3t, fall on 2ax, 3t?, 2ax. For some reason I was having trouble figuring out what her jumps were. Great layback, good footwork, nice camel, great end combo spin. Female vocals kind of haunting, good music I have heard before but can't place. I'd like to see her jumps flow better with the rest of the program, but there are some great qualities in her skating.

6. Katie Mulvaney- 2ax (hd), 3t (cht/so), 2f, tano 2r, 2ax (save), 2r, 2s. Nice camel, layback, spiral, great end spin combo.

7. Kristen Mita- 2ax, 3f (2ft/und/so), fall on 3t, 2r, 3s (und/to), 2ax (stepout) to 2t. Great spins, interesting program with great music and choreo, good quality here.

8. missed name (anyone know?) she skated 4th- fall on 2ax, 2f, 2z-2t-2r, 2f (stumble), fall on 3s, 2f, 2f-2t. Layback nice, some problem on a camel spin that caused her to really slow down, the rest of the spins quite strong, good music I think was Vanessa Mae's 8 Seasons or Storm.

9. Sarah Stone- fall on 2ax, high 2z, 3s (hand down), 2t, 1r, falls on 3t and 3s. Secret Garden was the music I think. Nice foot hold spiral thing, nice spins, good flow and speed. Good cohesive program with nice choreo.

10. Briana Pinzon- 3r (cht/to), fall on 3t, 2ax (cht), fall on 2s, 2r, 2f. Everything ok, nice spread eagle and cross leg spin.

11. Megan Wick- 2r, 2t (fo), falls on 3s and 2ax. 3s (bad stepout), I missed some jumps, had to get the door. Nice layback spin.

JUNIOR LADIES FS (in order of actual FS placement)

1. Mariel Miller- 3s-2t, 2ax-2t, 2r, 3t-2t, fall on 3s, 2ax. Nutcracker was the music. Great spins. Very interesting and high quality program. I really liked this skate, but forgot to write down more details. I think I may have missed part of it due to webcast issues.

2. Molly Oberstar- 3s-2t, 3t, 2f, 3r (2foot), 2ax to 2t?, 1s, 2ax-2t. Great camel to layback to crouch spin. Charlotte to spirals very nice, spin to Biellman position. Has a smooth quality, seamlessly linking jumps and other elements similar to Michelle Kwan. Great leg above head ending combo. Music was Rachmaninov.

3. Caroline Miller- 3s, 2f-2t, 2ax, 3t, (fall on 3r), 1s, 2z. Very nice camel, nice spread eagles, combo spin with very cool positions. Good footwork as well. Music was Flamenco style, I think.

4. Ambar Kaiser- 3s, 1r, 2z-2t, 3t, 2ax, 3s (hd), 2r, 2f. All spins very good. Music was Peter Gunn.

5. Kathryn McSwain- 2ax turnout, 2z, fall on 3r, 3s to 2t, 2f-2t-2r, 2r. Nice camel, great spins. I missed the end of her skate as webcast crapped out.

6. Brittany Vise- 2s, 2f, 2r, fall on 3t, webcast problems.
Layback nice, cool arm movements, good presentation to Hernando's Hideaway.

7. Stephanie Kuban- 2ax-2t, 2f, fall on 3t, 1r, 3s to 2t, 2ax, pop sal. Very nice camel, great layback and combo spin.

8. Rachel Marino- 2f-2t, 2ax-2t, 2t, 3s (cht/so), 2r-2r, fall on 2ax, 1f. Great opening and overall presentation, has an expressive quality like Sylvia Fontana. Spins and footwork great, gorgeous layback.

9. Lindsey Wilson- fell on 3 triple attempts and 2 2ax attempts. Landed 2f and 3t-2t cleanly. Good spins. Because of all the falls, she couldn't really get into presenting the program the way she would have liked to, unfortunately. Good triple attempts though, maybe she'll get them later in the season...nobody ever said 3lutzes were easy.

10. Catherine Riley- 2f, falls on 2ax and 3s, 2r, 2z-2r, 2s to 2t, 2f. Some great spins, nice split jump, very nice layback.

11. Cassandra Vogel- 2r, 2f to 2t, 2r, 2r-2r, 2s, 2f, 2t, nice layback, combo spin good.

12. Kacey Burke- falls on 2z, 3t , 3t again, and 3s. Landed 2ax stumble, 2f, 2t stepout, 1ax. Fast skating. Circ footwork and combo spin not bad.

Anyone know why Ryan Jahnke or AP McDonough wouldn't have been in this event, Broadmoor being their skating club?

Anyone know why Ryan Jahnke or AP McDonough wouldn't have been in this event, Broadmoor being their skating club?

Ryan J. debuted his new short program as an exhibition on Thursday -- the music is Jethro Tull's version of Bach's "Bouree." McDonough doesn't usually compete this early in the season -- she (and her new long tango program) may not have been competition ready yet.

Thank you so much for posting the review!

I'm glad Ryan Bradley did a nice program, he's not my favorite skater; but he has such a great enthusiasm on the ice. It should be interesting to see what a more "mature" Bradley comes up with at US Nats this year-if they show him.
