JUNIOR PAIRS
missed the jumps for Smith/Chitwood, came in halfway through their performance, the end featured some lifts and spins that were of OK quality.
Yount/Marron followed with a slow but fairly solid skate. Did throw 3s, 2twist, sbs 2f, throw 2 something. All lifts and spins were ok but could improve, everything was pretty slow at this point. Footwork needs more lift and speed, was somewhat groggy. Very nice spirals, though. Death spiral leg was sticking straight up, and a turned out position would be nicer.
Miller/Brubaker had an up and down skate with a decent attempt at a 3twist (low), a gorgeous throw 3salchow, 2ax into 2t, sbs 2s, a breezy lift, and some nice choreography, spirals nice, footwork good. About halfway through, the performance fell apart. A throw was popped, side by spins very unstable and short of rotation, an aborted lift, and a wipeout on a death spiral (more like a death throw). :/ This is very early in the season, and this pair has the ingredients for greatness as evidenced by the first 2 minutes of this freeskate (in addition to last year's good results). Good speed, very nice look and program. I look forward to seeing what they can do later in the season.
NOVICE MEN
Roger Corvasce rocked. Great spinner, reminiscent of Lambiel. Landed 2 2axels, 2 3toes, and a 3sal. And a slew of doubles. Great footwork too, he definitely won. The rest had some problems but i'll note them a little later.
***I apologize for any jump ID errors. Feel free to correct me.
NOVICE LADIES- I'll put in order of my guess at placements...
1. Jenna Yount- 2z-2t, 3s turnout, 2ax, 2f, 2ax to 2r, 2f. Great spins, spirals, and footwork. Great haunting/Enya type music that I've heard before in skating. She has some special Tonia Kwiatkowski-like qualities in her skating. It was a very *up* performance.
2. Stricker- 2ax-2t, 3t, 2f-2t, 2r, fall on 3s, 2r, 2ax, 2z turnout. Spin good. Aranjuez was the music.
3. Fairchild- 2f-2t, 3s, 2f, 2ax-2t, 3r (cht), 2r-2r, 2ax. Layback to sit very good. Bug to pancake spin great and fast. Good camel, fall on spin entry to final combo spin but got up and did it (well, some of it anyway). Good skate, music is Carmen.
4. A. Smith- fall on 3z, 3r (turnout), 2f (turnout), 2ax, 3sal (some error), 2ax-2t, 2r. Nice fast camel. Layback great to catch foot very fast. Good spirals, fabulous spins all the way through, great job.
5. Bullock- webcast cut out on the beginning of her skate, but the end looked good... had a 2r, 2z, 2ax, 2f. Cool footwork section, good split, nice skate to Spiderman.
6. Endow- 3t?, 3t (2ft)-2t fall, 3s-2t, 2ax (fallout), 2r, 2r? fall, 3s fall, 1ax fallout. Off balance on most jumps. Not much coverage of ice, and overall a little jump-focused, it seemed. Great layback.
7. McGinty- 2f-2t, fall on 2ax, 2z-2t, 2s, 2t, 2z. Very good spins.
8. Pontarelli- 2ax (2foot), 3t?-2t?, 2z-2r, tano 2z, 2f, 2s. Mistake on flying spin. Layback could improve. Good fly camel to catchfoot.
9. Schrader- 2z (fallout), fall on 2ax, 2f, 2r, 1ax, 2z-2t, layback very nice, spins ok.
10. C. Davis- 2ax (stepout), falls on 3t and 3s, 2f-2t, 2r, waxel, 2f-2t. Spins ok. Music was Robin Hood.
11. Kleppe- 2z-2r, 2f-2t turnout, fall on 2ax, 2s, 2r-2r, 2f, nice jumpover to sit, very low hydroblade move, spins and footwork ok.
12. Hatch- a few good doubles, 2ax 2footed, 3s (cheat and fallout)-2t. West Side Story.
13. Beecher- a few good doubles, spins ok, nice speed in skating.
14. Stevenson- a good 2r-2r combo, spins ok
15. Grant- a few doubles, nice 2t-2t combo, jumps could use more height.
JUNIOR MEN (in my order of guessed placements)
1. Casey McCraw- 3ax, 3t, 3z-3t (turnout), 3r, 3f (fall), 3s. Footwork good, all spins could use more speed and oomph, though the end spin was nice. Impressive jumps. Music was Peer Gynt. To be honest, I'm not so crazy about this music, it seems kind of silly or something. Guess I've seen it in too many cartoons...his music started sticking after the first 3t and they had to stop and restart.
2. Jeremy Abbott- 3z-3t (fallout), 1ax, 2f, 3ax, 3s, 2s-3t fall, 2ax. Techno music. Camel and flysit spin great, stylish and original. I have always loved this skater- he really has something special- musicality, excitement, and quality.
3. Christopher Darling- 1ax, 3t-2t, 3s, 3t?-2t, tano 2z, 3r, 2f, 2ax. Flysit good. A little too much arm-flinging for my taste. The music and choreography didn't really add up for me with this performance, but perhaps it's just too early and hasn't really come together yet. Footwork nice, good split, end spin slowed. Pretty solid skate.
4. Jon Nuss- 1z, 3f (fall), 3t-2t, 1z, 2r, 3s (fall) 3t (fall), 1ax. Great coverage and speed, fall on difficult footwork, but 2nd section was great. Very good camel spin. Suspense movie soundtrack that I liked, lots of good qualities in this guy, bummer about the jumps.
Al Zubi, Vickers, and Berg were basically a 3way tie for me. They each had a clean 2axel and some flawed triple attempts, some doubles, nice spins...
SENIOR MEN
2. Ryan Bradley- 3ax, 2ax? 3z-2t, 1ax, 3r, 3f, 3t, 3s (hand down). Untouchables. Good footwork. He looks more man-like now, I like the ponytail actually. I think there's some maturity and sincerity developing, it's nice to see.
1. Rohene Ward- fall on 3ax, 3t-3t, 2r, 3z (fallout), 2f, 1ax, fall on 3s. Gorgeous spirals, layback, spins. Saxaphone/dramatic music. Ended early, I don't think the ending has been fully worked out yet, really dropped off after the spin. Some really touching moments in this program.
Apparently Rohene won with one triple. Don't ask me how this happened.
The others didn't have much for clean triples...though Hatfield got a couple good ones in the beginning of his program.
