View Full Version : The Annual 2003/04 Skating Costume Bonfire!

Well, another skating season has ended and since it's the May long weekend here in Canada, I can't think of a better time to start the annual "skating costumes that deserve to be tossed into a bonfire" thread. :P
I'm sure most people know how to play by now, but for any newcomers, all you need to do is think of the ugliest, tackiest skating costumes you've seen this year...and throw them on the bonfire!
IIRC, Kurt's bright-red Power Ranger 1994 Rocketeer costume (ie. the only costume I can think of where the skater himself eventually burned it!)is traditionally the first addition to the costume bonfire. A few other contributions I'd like to make are:
...Emanuel Sandhu's bright pink LP shirt (he's worn it for the past two years now, so I think it's about time he retired it!)
...Sasha Cohen's yellow-and-black Maleguena outfit (I thought the frilly skirt in particular was much too "cutesy" for such a dramatic program and I liked her original black-and-red outfit much better!)
...all of the hideous outfits the cast of SOI had to wear during the "Time" transitions in this year's show (especially the poofy skirts for the ladies and the George Washington-style outfits for the guys). Truly the ugliest, most unflattering costumes I've ever seen in an SOI show for about 10 years. 8O
...every outfit Chait and Sakhnovski wore last season 8O
...Kati Winkler and Elena Grushina's exhibition dresses (talk about "wardrobe malfunctions waiting to happen!)
...And I know I'll probably get a few flames for this one, but I didn't really like Michelle's orange Tosca costume, either (mainly because of the colour). I much preferred the original lavender dress she wore for this program. However, I did like Michelle's dark blue SP and white exhibition dresses (which a lot of other people didn't seem to be too crazy about), so hopefully that evens things out a little bit.
If anyone has any more contributions to the bonfire, please feel free to add them. :D

I did not like any of Michelle's Vera Wang's this season. All of them looked kind of cheap to me. I just did not get them.

Can we burn the multitude of Swan Lake dresses? Anything with a bird on it/illusion of feathers, etc, needs to go - enough of them already!

I will second anything Chait/Saknovsky have worn over the past few years!!!
The costume the Japanese dance team wore in the original dance (the one with the half a long skirt) - just ridiculous!!
Polka outfits - need I say more!!
And in honour of this event I think we should burn a whole roll of illusion fabric just to see how nylon reacts when touched by flame. Should only take a second!!

Sasha Cohen yellow short program dress, not flattering to her figure at all. Cohen first swan lake dress, not a fan of feather motif. Definitely AP's swan lake dress. Cohen latter swan lake dresses were better than the first one, but the long waist is not too flattering either.

I thought Sasha's new Mal dress was lovely and was supposted to be a tango theme. I liked both swan dresses.
I wanna burn:
~MK's Wang dresses. They look too off the rack and have nothing to do with the music/story of her programs. Esp the SP one from nats that she fell out of...
~Weir's Iceicle on Crack LP outfit.
~All the ice dance dresses that have huge cutouts with out illusion fabric.
~Divakawa's Swan Lake dress. Icka.
~AP's swan lake dress.

Sasha's 2004 dresses are not flattering on her. I have no desire to burn them, I just thought her designers should do a better job.

Here's an idea... let's start a second thread just for ice dance. We can ask people to post which costumes they DON'T want thrown in the bonfire- because frankly I think a lot of the dance costumes should be.

All of the ice dancer's costumes! All of Sasha's, except Romeo and Juliet. Johnny Weir's and Plushenko's. Sokolova's, Irinia's, Arakawa's, Ap's.

where to start? actually this season didn't shame the sport as past seaons have...but of course, following tradition, there were a few costumes that were totally fabricated by colour blind...and texture blind FOLK...if there is such a thing :P joking of course...
I have to frown upon Sasha's black and white FEATHERED dress...i just did not like it.
Sasha, although an AMAZING skater, lost the battle with the designer this season. Her yellow dress was also so unflattering.
I HAVE to agree about Emanuels LOVELY pink top...it's old...and ugly from the start...i'll burn in myself. ;)
Ummmm let 's seeee...although i thought Euvgeny's REVERSIBLE costume change was very intelligent and well done....and ENTERTAINING....i know it wasn't used in any of the competitive events but I still felt a LITTLE uncomfortable watching Euvgeny skate around in a very SEXY dress!!!
Let's light the bonfire and start burning! enjoy next season, everyone!

well...way back when (July 2004) I wrote that I didn't "favour" Sasha Cohen's yellow and black dress. I've since changed my mind. It's different, but I actually kind of like it.
Ok, just had to get that off my chest before my conscience started bothering me :D

NO! You must NOT burn that dress/transvestite effort. It's absolutley rocked. Even if I didn't get it, it was still excellent.
I think it was worlds that I saw this...I'm not sure what the couple were called, but they wore these white costumes with blindfolds. I think they must be burned.

Melzorina, the couple with the blindfolds were Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski, Bulgarian ice dancers. He looked mighty hot in that outfit though! ;)

This has been a very popular opinion of Mich's 03-04 season Vera Wang designs, fair enough. However, these dresses many appear to be plain, but they are in no way ugly or deserving of being tossed in the fire. Surely you are aware of more terrible looking outfits. They are more "dresses" than "costumes", and from a design point of view, they are quite beautiful, "elegant yet understated". There are details which make those dresses expensive (draped twists, strategic rouching) which are difficult to notice from a distance, and must be seen more closely to be appreciated.
Some of this distaste might spawn from the fact that these designs weren't
best catered to her programs. I believe they were more expressive of Michelle's maturing personality and skating, they probably reflected her more than the programs.

I really want to burn Sasha's yellow and black dress. I don't think the color is very flattering on her - or probably anyone else for that matter. I am biased though, I really dislike the color yellow (orange too! but I didn't see that color this year). Also Arakawa's 1st Romeo and Juliet disaster. maybe we can take some of the awful textures from that dress (lord knows there was about a million different things going on) and put them on MK's rather plain dresses. Let me clarify that I do not want to burn MK's dresses - just liven them up a little. Let's just burn Arakawa and Sasha's.

Well, I think some of these may be current costumes but oh well. I really do not like Ryan Jahanke blue thing, Johnny Weir blue thing he wears. Come on men look like a man and not some I do not know what to call it. All of Ann Patrices dresses. Michelle Kawans dresses by Vera Wang but they have been burned - havent they? ;) Who is that skater that has the half black dress and cut outs on the other that skates to Carmen? I can't stand that one! Burn it! Michael Weiss current tattoo style shirt. What is up with that? Can we say UGLY!!
I happen to like a few of Sasha dresses, like her yellow one. I see I am alone on that.:)

That would be Julia Sebestyen (sp?) and it's one of my top bonfire candidates as well. It's supposed to be a soldier on one side and Carmen on the other --I can't watch her skate in that outfit without thinking of the scene in the movie "All Of Me" where Lily Tomlin's spirit is trying to take over Steve Martin's body and the two personalities are fighting with each other.
Add to the bonfire Mikey's tatoo shirt and the costumes of the ice dancers -- can't remember who -- which were (allegedly) American Indian, complete with headbands, war paint and other assorted foolishness. While we're at it, let's also toss on Baboo's unfathomable LP costume which looks like a ship's rigging (fitting, as he skates it to "1492" so he must be portraying the Santa Maria).

Put my vote in for Julia's Carmen outfit...and I think it's she that is in that little fluff piece where Peter Carruthers says "all this costume needs is a few more bowties"...that one needs to burn, too.
As well as Weiss' tatoo shirt.
I don't know that they are all burn worthy, but I agree that Kwan's "Vera Wang" outfits, IMO, are nothing to be in awe of...I mean, attaching that Vera Wang name to them and the cost they must run....they just do NOT look all that special.

My vote:
I'll put my vote in for Michael Weiss tattoo t-shirt!!! ICH!!!! :P (Michael, I love yer skating man, but if you're doing Zeppelin, you REALLY should wear a REAL Zeppelin tour t-shirt!!!)
I definitely agree on Arakawa Techno Swan Lake dress as well!!! EWWWW!!! :P
I'm not too thrilled with a lot of the ice dancer's costumes with the illusion skin fabric. Take some lessons from Belbin and Agosto!!! They got imagination and style!!! (And man!!! They look *GOOD* in it too!!!)

Michel W's tatoo shirt. Both of Kwan's dresses at Nats. The horrible burnt orange with the ugly drop waist and the awful gold. Bad color on her.

Sasha's keyhole in the sp dress what is all that about. The salmon pink color does not flatter her.
