Another great "worth the ticket price" show. There were some weak places, but overall well done. Congrats to the cast, Christopher Dean, and all the backstage support.

As is usually the case with Vancouver show, being the last one, there was a bit at the end for thanking the fans, the crew, etc., and then of course a little tribute to Isabelle and Lloyd. Kurt spoke on behalf of the cast to thank them for their long contribution to the show. Then Lloyd took the mike to say a little about being part of the legacy of pairs skating in Canada. Then he thanked his wife (in particular for not going into labour early so he could finish the tour!), the fans, and of course his best friend and partner Freddy. He got quite teary, which set me off. Isabelle was very up-beat by comparison.

As for the show itself, the highlights for me were:
~ Shae's "Caruso." Wow! After seeing that, I really hope she doesn't pair up with anyone else. She is fabulous and unique all on her own. An amazing performance.
~ both of Isabelle & Lloyd's numbers, but in particular "Remember Me This Way." I love their classic rock/wild style, but it was fitting that their last piece would be sentimental. Thank goodness I brought tissues.
~ Elena & Anton's "Kalinka." This piece has been done a zillion times, but never as well as this. Perfect. Elena looks great in pig-tails too.
~ Jamie & David's Ballroom piece. I'd heard a lot about this and it didn't dissapoint. What a hoot! They're so talented and versatile, I don't think there's any music they couldn't interpret.
~ Kurt's "Time in a Bottle." Despite his problems with the jumps, a great vehicle for him. Nice that after he fell for the 2nd time, he did some classic Kurt footwork that the audience cheered extra hard for ... and he acknowledged. Also nice that this solo fit the theme of the show.
~ the 1st act ensemble closing number. Lots of fun, well choreographed. My only complaint was that there were too many places to look at once.

I also really enjoyed Jennifer's solo number (one of the best show pieces she's ever done) and Kyoko & John's "Little Sister" (John looks great with his not-quite-so-long hair -- a Queer Eye suggestion perhaps?).

Less than terrific numbers, IMO:
~ "Hands of Time." I didn't mind most of the prop numbers because they were either short and sweet (e.g., "Timing is Everything") or else the props were well integrated into the choreography (e.g., "Workin' Time"). But Hands of Time is just plain stupid, contrived, and boring.
~ both of Alexei's numbers. I've loved Alexei in the past as both a competitor and his show numbers, but this year he hasn't come up with anything new or noteworthy. "Memorial," in particular, is such a retread. The injury is no doubt at least in part to blame, but I would have liked to see something worth his paycheque.
~ Todd's "Flamenco." Ok, actually I do like this number quite a lot for the most part. It's just that I can't help comparing it to Nyah. Totally unfair comparison, I know, and Todd has his own not-inconsiderable unique strengths and talents. But every time I hear that looong guitar arpeggio and see him waste it with nothing but stroking and setting up for his 3-axel, I can't help thinking how much better Kurt would use that music.
~ Kurt's "Ding Dong Daddy." I liked this number the first couple of times I saw it, but it doesn't stand up well to repeated viewings. All that sliding on the ice in particular gets pretty repetative. If he was going to repeat a number from his show/competitions, I'd've rather seen Moondance.
~ Steven's solo number. Can't even remember the music. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special either.

Thanks So Much For The Review. I Can't Believe Another CSOI Has Come & Gone. Izzy & LLoyd Will Be Missed !!

ITA With You Inregards To Shae-Lynn. I Think She Did A FABULOUS Job And She Is Doesn't Need A Partner To Make It As A "Solo" Skater.

Again Thanks :)

I have to say this was a good Stars On Ice! Shae-Lynn was amazing!!! Sad to see Izzy & LLoyd leave the cast... they bring so much energy to the show!

I'm working on posting my photos. I'll post the link later tonight! I got a new camera last week so this was a test. I have no idea how to work it yet... still reading the manual!! The photos, when posted, will not be cropped or colour corrected, just straight from the camera but resized and web ready. I do have Large hi-res versions if anyone needs.

Hey Brett !!

How's it going !!

Looking forward to seeing your pictures from the show. You always seem to take amazing pictures.

I am still in the process of uploading my pictures from the show. I have ACT I already uploaded and will be uploading ACT II tonight. I'll be sure to post a link here on the boards.

I was a bit disapointed in some of my pictures. I really need to get a new camera. First of all I am so tired of scanning my pictures, therefore I need a digital camera. Second of all, I have no idea why some of my pictures end up turning "dark" Either I am taking it at the WRONG place to get developed or I am just lucking ou on just bad lighting during the time of the shot. But what really makes me frustrtated is that I KNOW there is alot of light when the photo is being taken, so I guess I am a bit confused as to why the picture would turn out "dark"

You be the judge when looking at my pictures.

Conclusion, I need a new camera, and I need to start looking at a digital camera, something not expensive, in my budget, and will work at these events. I want some nice quality pictures when I go to Canadians.

Alright so I've rambled on. I'll be going now...

I noticed a number of mine turned out dark. They appear a lot lighter when at large res but when shrunk down for web size they go dark... so not sure what's up... Show skating is hard to shoot cause the moving lights throw autofocus out of wack... I seem to have more luck at competitions... bright lights! I'm still happy with a number of my photos from SOI...

What kind of camera are you currently using? Are you using high speed film or low speed film? Even if the spotlight is bright, the rest of the arena, especially where you're sitting is still dark. It sounds like all your pictures are underexposed.

(1) You should try using highly light-sensitive film like those with ISO rating of 800 or higher and a high shuttle speed like 1/125 and above to capture the action under lowlight condition.

(2) You can also try experimenting with photographic techniques like overexposing the pictures by one or two stops to see if it'll lighten the pictures any. When you aim your camera at a very bright spot, the camera's metering system will tend to underexpose it and hence it'll come out darker than expected.

(3) If you can afforded it, get a lens with a long focal length and the widest aperture you can afford.

I have a "Miolta" with a 200 Zoom Lens. Its a very good camera, I have been using this camera for a long time at skating events and overall I have been pleased with the results of my pictures. Just this years SOI I am disapointed in some of them. I normally use 400 SPEED. Sometimes 800 and maybe in this case I should have used 800 SPEED for SOI.

My shutter speed is always at 125 which works best for me.

Thanks so much for all your advice !! Its much appreciated. I guess I see everyone with "digital" camera's and I'd love to get myself one of those.

Brett thanks for sharing your pictures with us !!!

I'll be posting my pictures very soon. I just have to upload ACT II this afternoon!! Thanks again MQSeries for all your help :)

It wasn't during Lloy's speech when I lost it (although I was definitely close) but when he lifted Isabelle up on his shoulder as in Lillihammer. I'll never forget that, what a moment.

Huh. Brett - you must have been sitting somewhere near me. I was looking at your photos and, aside from a slight adjustment in angle (you must have been to my right), we have some nearly identical poses =). Nice photos, btw!

Here are my photos:
Vancouver CSOI Photos (http://www.kurtfiles.com/soi/vancouver04/vancouver04.php)

Took me forever to get them up and I had battery/space conservation issues in the second act so I took less photos of Todd, S&P, B&S, and Alexei than I wanted to and no photos of the broom number or 2x4=8. But there are still something like 300 photos here, so I hope people enjoy!

A belated thanks to Brett, Teenes and everyone else who's posted SOI photos and/or reviews here! I was especially touched by the photos of Kurt and Isabelle hugging during Lloyd's speech--I'm sure I would have needed a big box of Kleenex at my side if I had seen that for myself. Thanks again!
