Hi there.

Ever have one of those moments where you really start to feel you can't get your head around the most basic mundane concepts?

I was working on the opening menus for the DVDs I'm creating of the CBC worlds broadcasts. (This whole DVD production thing is still rather new to me. They _do_ look great and chapter markers and stuff like that are really cool!) I started obsessing about just what exactly the skating disciplines should be properly called.

My thoughts are:

Men's Qualifying
Men's Short
Men's Free
Ladies' Qualifying
Ladies' Short
Ladies' Free (note that CBC uses "Women's" instead of "Ladies"
Pairs Short
Pairs Free
Compulsory Dance
Original Dance
Free Dance

I quite often see "Long" instead of "Free" and the grammatically inclined might cringe at the sight of "Mens" and "Ladies". (Where plural possessive of "Lady" is assumed)

Now I'm not trying to start any arguments here, but I'm becoming curious if there is a definitively proper name for each of the disciplines.

Any thoughts?

The proper name according to ISU is FREE and not LONG; although some of figur skating fans are saying that with the new COP it would be more fitting the world LONG since now COP has a litte more specifics when it comes to the FREE program.
I have heard CBC calling Women instead of Ladies and it makes sense because the men event is called Men and not Gentleman; but ISU uses LADIES in that case.

I don't know if one of the names is considered "correct", but I believe the first programme can be called "short programme" or "technical programme" (SP is most often used), and the second can be called "free programme", "free skate", or "long programme". I don't think it really matters which one you use, but it's usually called either the free or the LP.

I would just copy it off of the ISU results page.
