I loved seeing Katy and Kimmie. Katy is my favorite. She has amazing spins and a graceful quality about her. I love how both girls have a wonderful lutz outside edge takeoff. No doubt, these girls are the future in US skating.

I was mad they didn't even mention the pairs!

I look forward to the Jr. Worlds coverage every year but expect Not to See those disciplines where the US is not competitive. I was impressed with the US girls too. I'm a fan of Lysacek's & enjoyed seeing Brauninger for the 1st time.

This was the first time I have noticed that Junior Worlds was on TV -- is that the case?

I enjoyed watching it very much!!

No, they've been airing it for a while. This was the fifth year in a row that we got a two hour broadcast from Lifetime; before that, we used to get an hour from ESPN (and/or ESPN2, I forget). I remember watching that as early as '95, I think. I'm not sure how far back it goes, but I remember Verne Lundquist talking at some point about how one of the first skating events he covered was junior worlds the year Yuka Sato won (was that 1990?), so at least that long ago there was some kind of TV broadcast.

Yep, Junior Worlds used to be covered by CBS (Gosh, I'm old  ). I remember one in Japan that was covered by Pat O'Brian of all people. It had Susan and Jason Dunjeon in pairs, and the girl event was focused on the "phenom" from Japan, Midori Ito. She had short blunt hair back then, sort of like what Yoshia Onda has now. I think Kathryn Adams might have been the American representative at that event. I wonder whatever happened to her?

I also remember another one covered by CBS that showed Jessica Mills winning the silver medal for the second straight year, I think. I remember liking Jessica's on-ice personality very much and thought that she would make it big in the senior level but that never happened for her.

And that would have been circa 1983. Wow--I had no idea the TV coverage went that far back. I didn't realize O'Brian covered skating for so long, either--I remember him as commentator for all those pro events on CBS in the mid-90s, too.

Hmm, why do I want to say she did some show skating?

Actually, I think in the two years Mills went to junior worlds, she won the title the first time out and dropped to fourth the second time. Or maybe the year she won wasn't the first time she competed, but that's definitely what she did in her last two appearances, anyway. (A number of ladies champions have gone back for another try at junior worlds, and not one of them has managed to repeat, although some pairs and dance teams have been successful. Interestingly, Mills is the only previous winner the USFSA has ever sent back to junior worlds--after what happened to her, they've never done it with anyone else.) I think that must have been 1990, the same year Sato won. I liked Lundquist's comment about watching Sato fall a few times and win the event: "...and I realized, 'This is really an unusual sport.'" :)

Alternately, you could also possibly be thinking of Lisa Ervin, since I think she won silver something like three years in a row. (Shades of Evan Lysacek, if you don't count 2002.)
