View Full Version : Tonya Harding- CBS Early Show
Did anyone else see Tonya Harding this morning on the CBS Early Show? She skated in Central Park and in her interview with Harry ___(the "Biography" guy) she said that she was going to try and get reinstated as an amateur to compete again. I don't see how she can, but she said she was going to give it a shot.

Can you give details on how and what she did on the ice this morning? Thanks.

Oh yes, I am sure that they will reinstate Tonya Harding of all people
I didn't see the show, but did see a preview of it, and was really surprised that she was on the show. I thought she was boxing now and that was all she wanted to do. Can she not make up her mind? And is she delusional enough to think she will get another chance at skating? She is not even welcome in the professional ranks, much less the amateur.

She is still boxing. Delusional or not she is still the only American woman to do the triple axel in competion. It's sad to see her like this but it's also sad to think no women have yet jumped like her in the U.S. at competion.

I'm surprised she skated. I don't think she's been skating around here at all, although I guess she could have snuck in a practice or two when no one was looking...
Any Portland or Vancouver, WA sitings of her?
She skated to a song I've never heard, but liked what I heard. It was on the theme of survival (sorta- it was this morning and I don't remember the words). I'm not a skater so can't really say what she did on the ice. I don't believe she did much more than single jumps and when Harry made a comment on her big jumps she was honest enough to call them very small jumps (laughing). She said that skating was her true passion and she wanted to get back to it. She also mentioned that she had just decided this and started back skating 6 days ago and that she wasn't in very good shape yet. She was very upbeat, smiling, etc. She mentioned her two upcoming boxing matches and said that she would continue to do that. She wasn't too dressed up, very little makeup, hair just pulled back into a pony tail, and a black outfit that looked like a warm-up/practice outfit. Sorry I can't give you more detail than that. Perhaps someone else can.

The CBS site has a story and a videoclip of Tonya's skating here:

As for Tonya wanting to reinstate, her lifetime ban from the USFSA aside, didn't she already formally lose her eligibility at the pro competition where she made her big skating "comeback" a few years ago?

Well her lifetime ban is from the USFSA and although not concrete it is assumed it is from the ISU as well since an ISU nation has created a ban. Theorhetically another country could take her in but highly doubtful.
BUT, she did skate in several pro competitions to as far as the ISU is concerned.. USFSA ban or not, she is pro and they will never reinstate her since they would have to reinstate all of the other pros.. Oksana Baiul included (naming her because she still wants to reinstate).

She landed a single axel and two footed a double salchow. She also did layback and change foot camel spins and a back spiral.

The problem is that it only applies to skaters, not judges who cheat!

Tonya skated to Jo Dee Messina's "Because You Love Me." [insert snicker here if you want :) ]
She landed a decent single axel--only 2 more to go, tonya, to be the "best female skater," er, jumpwise!
She did a back spiral, layback spin, 2-footed a double salchow (that's MY move!), and did a camel (which looked to be on an outside edge) change camel.
Reinstated? Um, she's delusional.

Tonya: "I want to skate for the people." Insert TWO snickers here.
I was snickering at the song title.
Tonya WAS a great skater in her day. IMHO the most talented jumper. She probably could have beaten Nancy without the whack heard round the world.
But it's my prerogative to snicker at anything she does or says.
She certainly doesn't command any respect. Especially when she has squandered EVERY opportunity to redeem herself.
Go chew on that!

Nice gal really bad environment, really bad ex-husband and friends. I hope that she does reinstate, not as an amateur. I would like to see how she is at coaching. I would welcome her to our rink. What do you think?
Am I crazy or having a weak moment?
No comment please:roll:

I would think she would be a great jump coach and good at helping out with competing.
Her name alone would draw many people. [They say that's why she's among the highest, if not the highest, paid female boxer.]
Really bad friends and exhusband? Yes.
But again, she has proven time and time again that she does not learn from her mistakes.
Remember in oct. 1999 when she was invited to the pro competition in West virginia and placed a respectable 2nd. [http://www.charliesweb.com/tonya/huntington/huntington.html]
Well, if she behaves, maybe we will get to see her skate again!

I don't think Tonya is too worried about skate board opinions. No American girl has done the 3 axel since Tonya so she can be very satisfied to know that. I mean you'd think someone could have in over ten yrs time but no. She has plenty of respect from her fans of whom there are many. If her web site is any indication. It's ok Tonya, you don't need no stinkin' respect from some wannabes, you already did it all on the ice. Nothing more to prove.

Actually she did some coaching here in Portland for a while in the '90s and was absolutely not successful at all (and yes, people did give her a chance).
I don't feel comfortable supplying any details, but I have good reason to believe she is NOT a good jump coach, either. Oh well.
MAYBE if she moved to another part of the country, but I don't think that's likely to happen, either.

Move to another part of the country? No - we don't want her here, please! 8O

Actually I have never caught her on tape, expect at the Olympics. Then on all those rag television shows where she would not talk to the camera.
I have no opie on her really expect that she could really jump and the costumes I saw were bad.

Lol- yes, I always did want to redesign her costumes. It seems to me another girl was yelling "why me" in '94. LOL

All I ever heard and saw on the tapes was "Why, why" over and over again. If it had happened to me, you can bet your last cent I'd be yelling "Why" with or without the "me" if I were in the same situation. And what the heck is with the LOL? Do you REALLY think an attack on a skater is a laughing matter? 8O

Then AFTER that is when I lost respect for her. Sorry actions speak louder than words, well her words were pretty bad too! I do not like how she dised Oksana and the silver medal. BUT that is just what I think.

Based on the huge decline in the popularity of figure skating--in terms of events, ratings, etc--I wouldnt be too surprised to see someone trying to bend the rules in order to allow Tonya to skate again. People can say what they want about her, but I'll bet each and every one of them would watch if Tonya were to return to figure skating.

They would probably watch just to tear her apart on all the skating boards. That seems to be what people enjoy doing most on these skating sites.

Uh, excuse me, but Tonya was banned for life. She IS delusional if she thinks she will be reinstated. Gee, I've got a good idea, why doesn't she open a rink with Gordie McK. and they can team coach. Imagine the scenario -- he yells the "f" word at the kids and she whacks them on the knees with a hockey stick.

Tonya wasn't even in the arena when old Nancy pancy got her knee slammed. Get your facts straight. She isn't going to be reinstated either but it's really not our business is it?
celtic
03-06-2004, 08:07 AM
Why isn't it our business? Some of us are involved, or have been deeply involved, with USFSA. We are either skaters, coaches, club volunteers or parents, or a combination thereof. It IS our business to see that people in the sport behave themselves in the rink and at competitions.
My earlier post was facetious, and I do have my facts straight. She was involved in the attack in that she was aware of it and in most people's minds, help plan it. We won't quibble with that. It is analagous to some thug paying someone to attack a third party and then saying, "oh, he wasn't there", so he's innocent?
I really could care less about Tonya and I never could, but my point is she is banned and she should realize what that means: take responsibility for your actions, either behind the scenses or otherwise, and accept it.

If they could prove Tonya was really involved she would have got real jail time. She has never admitted being part of it. She can do as she wants now, she doesn't need your permission to live in or out of the spotlight. If she wants to think there is a chance for reinstatement then she can think it. It won't happen but she can think what she wants about it but owes no explainations. What I would like explained is why no American woman in ten years can do a triple axel in competion. Only Tonya.
