The television column in yesterday's WashPost indicated there were other viewing options up against the Super Bowl and there was a figure skating mention:

Article Title: Marathon Cures For Those Super Bowl Blues

"•Figure skating. Pity poor ESPN, forced to counterprogram the Super Bowl with U.S. figure skating championships."

But you can earn respect till you're blue in the face, and some people still won't give it to you. I wrote an article once about how figure skating really is a sport, and lots of people wrote me to say, "No, it isn't." (I'm not complaining, though, because lots more wrote in to say they agreed with me!)

Oooooooh, that really irks me when people say that figure skating is not a sport!:x :x :x :x :x

When people say this to me, I usually point out a few things.

-You can win a superbowl/Stanley Cup, etc., even if you are about the 200th best player in the world. You don't win a World/Olympic title unless you are THE best in the world.

-You can also win football, etc. titles even if you sit on the bench the entire playoff season. In skating, if you don't skate, you can't win.

-You can also win a football, etc. championship even if you have an absolutely horrible first half/ first period. Again, not true with skating. 1 or 2 mistakes could drop you right out of medal contention. It often takes near-perfection to win World/Olympic Gold.

Grrrrrr to those who put down figure skating's athleticism, especially to the jocks who win their 'athletic' titles while bench-sitting!

If you ask ME, it's the SPORTSCASTERS that need to give more respect to Skating. When was the last time you saw Sportscasters give equal time for Skating along with other sports? I've noticed every Winter the main sport talked about and ALWAYS talked about is FOOTBALL,FOOTBALL,FOOTBALL!!!!!! Like it owns the season!!!!!!! Anyone agree with me?

Yes, but I think that has more to do with marketing. The NFL has to be one of best marketed instutituons - sport or otherwise. I often wonder if marketing students study the NFL. Think about all the hype over the Superbowl. From my understanding rarely does the game ever live up to the hype. (This year is an exception.)

Most of these sports journalists are too lazy to learn anything at all about figure skating...they can't even tell one jump from another, much less do they bother to learn what a mistake means as to marks, nor does level of difficulty matter to them...the only mistake they know of is a fall.

They have logical inconsistencies, for instance, they claim that figure skating is not a sport because it is judged...but so is boxing, gymnastics, diving, and other sports have aspects of judging in them, like basketball and football...and sometimes, these referee decisions can be decisive.

In that respect, I think the new system will be helpful in getting more letitimacy for the sport because now skating judges have instant replay as well, not to mention the person who certifies the required elements (no judge can ever again say that they just didn't see someone miss an element).

However, webeeducated, I think I know what you mean...ever since Nagano, the skating establishment itself in the US has been claiming that the judges are corrupt...and you can't have it both ways, you can't claim that, have a HUGE scandal at SLC and then at the same time claim that you have this lovely, respectable sport!

I couldn't have said it any better myself loveskating. There are other sports they talk about that are judged.Something surely needs to be done.

well that is basically their own fault... figure skating has alot less seroid use and such then other sports yet because of all this fuss and scandals with judging it sounds as if it's the worse sport in the world, sure judging need to be straightened out but it should be done quietly just like the other sports associations deal with their steroid problems. The huge scandals that they're starting are simply hurting the sport.

They never reported on it even from when skating first was founded.
