I know I've been watching too much "Trading Spaces" when I couldn't figure out why an interior decorator made your list!

Yeah, the ABC Doug Wilson would make more sense. And he doesn't use Venitian plaster in his broadcasts.

I don't know every single name on there, but I can only see 5 names that aren't North American - Chris Dean, Tatiana Tarasova, Sally Stapleford, John Nicks and Jacques Rogge.

This is my list in no particular order - and not pertaining to just this year.

1. Midori Ito
2. Kristi Yamaguchi
3. Okasan Bauil
4. Kurt Browning
5. Tamara Moskvina
6. Elvis Stojko
7. Peggy Fleming
8. Tonya Harding
9. Scott Hamilton
10. Lori Nichols
11. Torvill & Dean
12. G&G
13. Sandra Bezic
14. Todd Eldridge
15. Bourne & Kraatz
16. Dick Button
17. Plushy's coach and yags ex- coach can't remember his name!!
18. Tarasova
19. Maria Butyrskaya
20. Michelle Kwan
21. Frank Carrol
22. Paul Martini (even though I refuse to pay for FSW)
23. Speedy
24. Marie Le ? (frech wishy washy judge)
25. Arturno Demietrieve (forgive my spelling)

I picked people who were influential for various reasons and not necessarily always positive. I left off Sarah and Robin because I don't think we can tell yet IF they are going to be influential in figure skating, being famous isn't the same as being influential. If Sarah stays healthy and competitive then I think she will influence the sport but only time will tell. I left off Tara because although she is famous for her jumping, I think Midori was more influential than Tara. You may scratch your head seeing Maria B.'s name but I think her career proved to many of these young women you don't have to peak at 16 and therefore skaters like Anne Patrice McDonough and Jenni Kirk (just to name two examples) are finishing high school and pacing themselves rather than totally giving up their "youth" or "childhood" to the sport.

Icenut,

I see what you mean ...the IFS list had a gran total of 6 non- North Americans, one more than I had. I had wanted to add yagudin, too.

Toeloopy,

Yes, first he will make your career by giving you all the best camera angles and air time, then he makes your life miserable by giving you a "Tuscany Melon" kitchen.

Good List JD. I may put together an "all time" list , too. It would be very different from my list for 01-02.

I think another name that should definitely be on an all-time list is Britain's Madge Syers. She competed in the Worlds in 1902 (?) when all the competitors were men and no woman had ever competed. She placed second behind Ulrich Salchow, but many felt she should have won and Salchow later presented her with his medal, IIRC. Women were immediately banned from competing, but they decided to add a women's competition in 1906 (?) and she won a few times in a row, plus the first Olympic gold for ladies skating. Pretty influential if you ask me! The woman who pioneered ladies skating!

Wow IceNut I had never heard of her, way cool and nods to Ulrich for giving her the medal. !!

I'm glad trixie put Robin Wagner on the list, only I would have placed her a little higher than #17! ;)

Trixie did state that her choices were in no particular order.
But I agree, C, that if I had a list, Robin would be in the Top 10 easily. She just has it going on.....

trixie, your list is interesting in that the only eligible skater on the list is Michelle Kwan. and besides her, there are only a handful of other skaters listed.

its an interesting point that those with the most influence in skating don't even skate! they are coaches, former champions, or ISU members.

My powers of inductive reasoning tell me that the most influential people in figure skating this past year have been:

Joe Inman, U.S. national and international judge
Peggy Fleming
Tatiana Tarasova
Sally Stapleford
Lavoie
Christine Brennan
David Dore, who rose like a helicopter right to the top

Okay, bcskater, I'll explain a bit.

Tonya - influential, 3 axel and the "whack" which brought tons of attention to skating.

No Nancy because although she was a wonderful all around skater she didn't set any new standards nor did her actions directly cause the "whack" my guess is whoever was seen as Tonya's comp would have gotten the whack even if it had been 13 yr Michelle Kwan. So no, I don't think Nancy's one of the most influential, but when she was on she was gorgeous and a lovely all around skater.

B&K - made the list because of their protesting their placements and their insistence on examining the judging of ice dancing and I think this indirectly resulted in S&P being awarded a second Gold, because I think the stage was set and people so much believed that ice dancing was at times fixed that it didn't seem to stretch the imagination too much that pairs may have been fixed. OH and hydroblading. :-)

As yet I don't see what influence S&P have had, as far as I know they didn't introduce new moves, they won 1 World Championship and share the Gold medal, it was really Scott and Sandra who got the rest of the media and the public all in an uproar about the judging, so I actually don't see where they've been that influential. ANd yes the judging is being changed but I still contend that's more because of the media and the public's outrage not S&P.
