Gee, "TBD" is going to an awful lot of comps and in every discipline too. Is that really fair to the rest of the young Canadian skaters?

It looks like a lot is riding on the summer monitoring comps this season. It also appears that those skaters who received early assignments and do well are going to be given every opportunity to make it to the Jr. GPF.

Lots of TBD's there, but that's okay -- several monitored summer events yet to go as well.

(Keeping my fingers crossed for a couple young skaters I know...)

I think that TBD's are good, the way that Canada seems to wait and see who is skating the best by the end of the summer seemed to work out quite well last year, If they did a sort of rigid Nationals decide internationals descision then cynthia Phaneuf probably wouldn't even have been on the circuit, much less the final last year.

Oh, I don't think either DL or I are complaining, Thomas! I think it's a smart way to hand out assignments. One of the 'buzz phrases' for Skate Canada is 'excellence breeds opportunity' (something like that) -- in other words, those who have the goods, get the 'prizes.'

I'll definitely be making a trip up to Edmonton for Wild Rose -- wish I could get to some of the other summer comps too!

Well last year, Lauren Wilson was given JGP assignment in spite of her 19th place finish at Canadians which shows that Skate Canada is not relying on just on placements at Nationals.

Now Lauren was suffering from food poisoning at 2001 Canadians which is why she skated so poorly. Lauren had won the Western Challenge and was expected to contend for the Jr. Championship. Her mother told me that WOS asked her to skate regardless of how well she did, and told her that her placement would not be held against her later, and they were true to their word.

Lee's right. I'm not unhappy about those TBD's. I think it provides great incentive to our young juniors knowing that if they do well over the summer, the reward may be an international assignment come Fall.

Have they changed the junior pairs age limits? According to the Skate Canada site McEwan/Willemse are too old (him not her) for JGP unless they have changed the ISU junior age requriements. Anyone know if this has happended? This would have a big impact as Canadian eligibility for Junior has been the same as ISU - I know there were a number of retirements this year of guys who would have had to skate senior due to the age requirements and they or their partners just weren't able to step up to the senior level even though they will have reached their 21st birthday by July 1, 2002. Maybe they have made some kind of exception for Willemse (but I don't think even Skate Canada can do that).

The ISU Junior age limits have not changed, and SC Junior age limits follow the ISU ones. There are a couple possibilities here; a) the birthdate posted on the SC website is incorrect, or; b) someone really screwed up and missed the birthdate. I'm sure someone will have notified SC -- or will soon!

I realize that both of you thought, that the TBD's are good, but I guess I wasn't clear about that either

Does anyone know if Marie Luc Jodoin is in contention for assignments this year? She skated rather poorly at Canadian Nationals as I recall, and didn't place well at the Eastern Challenge either..........

Marie Luc Jodoin was 12th at Cdns this past year. She's probably being monitored and whether or not she gets an event will probably depend on how she skates in the summer comps. Anything is possible!

I'm a lil surprised they haven't given Damien Mainprize an assignment .... he had a fairly clean short and a fantastic long at nationals this year ... I think he placed 7th overall but finished off the season with a bronze at one of the development internationals at the end of the season.

I'd think he'd be a good candidate along with Demers for a shot at the JGP.

Mainprize is assigned to the NAC event in Phoenix in a couple weeks. If he does well there, he could possibly end up with a JGP assignement. There are a lot of "TBDs" to be filled yet.
