View Full Version : Celebration on Ice in Newmarket
Is anyone else going? I'm really looking forward to seeing those skaters in a small venue!
I haven't picked up my tickets yet, and I don't even know what time the show starts. I'm assuming I can pick them up at the arena an hour beforehand. Does anyone know for sure?
Thanks :)

Tickets for this event were sold through the Newmarket Theatre (905-953-5122). You should check with them to see if there is ticket pick-up at the rink; otherwise, the Theatre is about a 5 minute drive from the Twinney Centre and I'm not sure what hours they are open. Wouldn't want you to be disappointed! :(
Thanks!
It all worked out and we picked up our tickets at the door.
Did anyone else go? In spite of the venue (we had seats with no backs on them) I thought the show was great. It was worth needing a massage after two hours.
I can post a short review - albeit from memory - if anyone's interested.

I'm certainly interested! :D
Does anyone know if/when this will be televised?
I don't think it's being televised. I watched the show from the Ricoh coliseum in Toronto, and some of the numbers at this one were the same. I think the other show is being shown again on CBC this week or next.
I don't really remember the order of skaters, so these are just random thoughts:
Ken Rose skated to a Christmas song - he was really good. I saw him at nationals a couple of years ago. Definitely one to watch.
Jen R's programs were lovely, but nothing spectacular.
Joannie, on the other hand, was amazing. She skated to Grown Up Christmas Wish landed a few triples and did a beautiful spiral - I'm happy to finally see a Canadian lady hold a spiral for more than a second! If she skates well at nationals, or Jen makes a few mistakes, she could easily win.
Brian Orser's first number looked to me like it could be one for a retirement show - although I hope not. He also skated a Christmas number. Both were good - typical Orser smooth footwork, a couple of huge delayed axels and a backflip.
Donald Jackson skated and he looked incredible. Landed several doubles (mostly two-footed) and, I think, an inside axel, which most skaters today don't do. He got a huge ovation. I hope I'm in that great shape when I'm his age!
B & E skated their number from SOI last year, plus a Christmas one. She looks wonderful. The usual tricks from them - but I never tire of watching them.
Kurt was the usual Kurt - skated to his number from SOI - where he starts out wearing his guards - and a new one - 20s or 30s music. Both had great footwork, one triple I think. He got an ovation for the second number.
Shae and Vic were one of the highlights for me. They did their new snake charmer program, and the swing number from Gotta Skate. Both were fast, smooth, passionate...I could go on and on. They got the biggest ovation of the night. I'm really going to miss their skating.

I was told by Jean-Michel Bombardier (of WOW Events) that there will be no TV coverage of this year's "Celebration on Ice". It is unfortunate - seeing all those World Champions on the ice at the same time was fabulous (I attended the show in Peterborough) and it should have been preserved for posterity!

Did Brian skate to "Story of My Life"? That's his signature exhibition piece and his late mother's favourite program.
Nope. I remember Story of my Life from the Calgary Olympics. That's one of my all-time favourite skating programs.
It was new - at least I haven't seen it before - and the lyrics were rather poignant. I wasn't familiar with either the song title or the singer. Of course now, I can't even remember the main lyrics:roll:
