For those that don't know, in Britain the Sports Personality of the Year programme is on right now. It's the 50th anniversary, and to celebrate it, they're doing an extra award to find the number 1 out of all the winners from the last 50 years. (T&D won it in 84, Robin Cousins won it in 80, and John Curry won it in 76). Anyways, they're had programmes on all this week, showcasing each winner, and have had voting set up. The anniversary programme has just started, with the 5 who received the most votes throughout the week being in the "final". Voting will continue tonight, and afaik the winner will be announced later.

There's a lot of very famous and legendary names that have won the award over the years, and the finallists have been announced as David Beckham, Bobby Moore, Steve Redgrave, Ian Botham (I could have guessed all those) and TORVILL & DEAN!!! Wahoo!! It's so great that they've been voted into the final 5, especially considering that skating is a relatively low-profile sport. Just goes to show that the population still remembers them! :)

Will post with the final result later. Gooooooooo J&C!!! :)

I am unfamiliar with all of the other finalists except for Beckham, who is a current figure. Do you think that current athletes will have a big advantage over Torvill and Dean (who won their Olympic Gold nearly 20 years ago, or is the judging panel knowledgeable enough to fairly evaluste all finalists?

Steve Redgrave won. He is Britain's greatest olympian, having won 5 gold medals in rowing, at 5 consecutive Olympics up to 2000.

Bobby Moore (deceased) - Captain of England 1966 World Cup Football winning team.

Ian Botham - captain of England cricket team last time we won the ashes (ie beat Australia) around 1986 I think.

And Mr Spice, the whole world knows all about.....

What knowledgeable judging panel? It was a phone in vote!

I had heard of Steve Redgrave. I have to admit, winning 5 golds at 5 consecutive Olys makes him a worthy winner.
