Congratulations to Sarah on winning an ESPY for best U.S Olympian!
In her speech she even stood up for the sport a bit! 8)
LOL @ Samuel L. Jackson who joked that she looked exactly like she does on tv.
And for the fashion police, she was wearing a pretty red dress with spaghetti straps. She looked great IMO.

Yipeeee Sarah! Congratulations and good luck on the other two nominations still to come tonight! :)
Good for Sarah. Is this the first time a figure skater has won an Espy?

I thought it was cute that she wished her brother a happy birthday!
Loved the comment that they're 'not all girls in pretty dresses and you should try doing a triple triple'! I know I messed that up, but someone will have the correct quote out here soon....

Well it was something like that!
It was SO awesome even though it's just the Espys, but it's still cool. I loved her speech (For once, it didn't sound rehearsed!). Here's the yahoo report with a beautiful shot:

Wasn’t Sarah just great, she did the sport of figure skating proud. :D
Imagine with all those great athlete out there and being nominated five times, she must be thrilled to be in all that company. I loved the way ESPN focused on her.
Yes, what she said was so cute. I went something like it is not easy for a girl in a pretty dress and be elegant and still do triple/triple, I probably screwed it up, also. :D

Good for Sarah....she was very gracious and a good sport in the other categories where she didn't win. Winning an award for any figure skater is deserving recognition for the sport itself.......

Congrats to Sarah! Sorry I didn't see the show, but thank you for the descriptions of what she said and the pics! She looks great! Maybe she'll open the door for more skaters to win future ESPY's! :)

Anyone have a transcript of her speech? The statement about a 3/3 not being elegant sounds like something I would absolutely love. Good for her!
I just went through my tape and transcribed Sarah's thank you. Here it is (and yes, I am a saint).
Wow. This is such an honor, just to be nominated. It's really a thrill to be here. Every year I've watched this show with my family, so it's especially meaningful that they can be here. I'm proud to be representing figure skating. I know that some people think that we're just girls in pretty dresses, but it's not easy to be graceful and do triple triples [big applause from audience]. So I'd like to thank everybody who helped me get to where I am, my coach, my family, everybody knows who they are, and I'd like to wish my brother a happy birthday. Thank you.
Thank you for the transcript, rack! Wasn't it great Sarah didn't do a rehearsed-sounding pre-written thing for her acceptance?? It was truly from the heart!! :D

Are the ESPY winners told ahead of time that they won the award? I finally got around to watching the tape, and watching the "reaction shots" reminded me of my days in high school drama class -- very faked 'surprised I won' reactions. I also noticed that shortly into the program, they stopped doing the reaction shots altogether (i.e.,showing all 5 nominees awaiting the winners name), and they just showed the winner after their name was called. Plus there were pre-taped acceptance speeches. So are the winners told ahead of time that they won?

Text of Sarah's speech--hope I have this is all correct:
[b:1391bdcc3f]Wow this is such an honor just to be a nominee tonight. And to meet so many people who have inspired me my whole life. It's really a thrill to be here. And every year actually I watch this award show on tv with my family. So it's especially meaningful that they can be here tonight. I'm proud to be here representing figure skating. I know some people think we're just girls in pretty dresses who twirl, but it's not easy to be graceful and do triple-triples.[/b:1391bdcc3f] (lots of applause at that line--yeah Sarah!) [b:1391bdcc3f] So I'd like to thank everybody who helped get me where I am...my coach...my family--everybody knows who they are. And I'd like to wish my brother a happy birthday.[/b:1391bdcc3f]
- end of speech and I must say she was very graceful and gracious on stage. So many others stumbled over their words but Sarah was wonderful. Good for her!----And to the last post--I don't think awards like the Espy's or MTV movies awards have the drawing power of the Oscars so I bet they do let the winners know to make sure that they will hopefully show up. But the a lot of Winter Olympic athletes were there who were nominated w/Sarah. Heck I'd go if I were in their shoes.
Has any other skater ever been nominated for an espy?
