Wow, this event reminded me how much I love the pros-- and what attracts me about skating. Don't get me wrong, I do love following the Sasha saga and the Grand Prix, etc. ;)... but really many of my favorite skaters are the old pros-- their performances are so emotional, and many are also highly personal, for the audiences as well as for themselves.

Highlights for the night:

1. Oksana-- she looked great-- radiant. I was sooo happy simply to see her take the ice. She looked fitter than I expected, albeit a little shakey, and the choreography didn't really stand out to me. But that old Oksana magic was still on hand because it really didn't matter what the choreography was to an extent, because her presence just took and held your attention. She said in an interview earlier in the year that when she takes the ice again, you'll see the newfound support she has in her life show up in her skating... and that was so true-- she seemed so calm, balanced, and joyful out there. At the same time, she lost none of her attack; it's weird, she had this strange combination of calmness and attack. She's just proving to herself that she can do it... and I love that attitude, that competitive spirit within her. She's such an inspiring figure. (Okay, enough Oksana propaganda ;)... can you tell she's my favorite skater?)

2. B&S-- actually, their technical program performance was my favorite performance of the evening (from a purely skating perspective). What was their music? It was dark, dramatic and just really fresh and powerful. I liked their costumes and their overall look on the ice... their skating is pure Olympic Gold caliber-- their technique, their speed, their line.. I mean, it's just like, as soon as they take the ice, you're just struck by the "quality" of their skating and their talent. I enjoyed their artistic program as well, although the music didn't really build for me. But it had a nice romantic look and I like many of the poses they struck throughout the program.

3. S&P-- Crying was a really emotional performance and exemplified this couple's strengths. Really simple, effective movements (especially the spinning dance lifts... okay, the technical term is eluding me right now). The Queen performance was really interesting choreographically.. and once again, both pairs really demonstrated just the sheer quality of their skating and of their potential. To use a really bad analogy, it's like driving a luxury BMW- even if it's an older model, a little weathered perhaps, the quality is still there, and everytime these pairs take the ice, it's so plainly obvious. As pros, they are even more enjoyable to watch I think, as their performances have become more emotional and more inventive.

4. Victor-- I liked his Hotel California performance. Vintage Victor, with all the delayed arm movements, tango flourishes (or whatnot), and those come hither eyes ;). Yum. Did he do a triple axel? He looks better than he did the last time I saw him.

5. Brian-- hey, what is there to say? Can anyone believe this guy is forty? What athleticism. That said, I'm not sure what to think about his film noir programs.. didn't quite work for me. It was like watching one of Michelle Kwan's more obscure programs-- may improve upon rewatching; there were some interesting elements.

6. Kurt-- his artistic program really showcased his strengths. He's typically one of my favorite male performers, but this particular night he seemed a little sluggish; although good enough to trump Victor solidly. I knew he would too when I saw Victor's music choice... just not going to fly with this audience.

7. Nichole-- hmm.. I guess the matchup of these two ladies was really suitable.. they seem to be at the same stage of their careers, sort of, although Oksana still has her spark and also her competitive drive. Nichole... watching her is just a little sad-- although her double axel was beautiful. Wow, she must have really lost it in her technical program for them to omit her performance.

8. Kulik-- another one of those pros who just exemplify quality skating. I don't think he's really challenging himself though.. spins are still a little weak, and Susie was right when she said there's an unrefined quality about him... but what beautiful jumps! Dick would be raving about his soft landings as well, still. Side note, it was funny the way Susie was going on about his jumps, and his powerful gliding movements on the ice, etc... it sounded like she had a little crush on him or something lol. That said, I really really want to see him do pair work with Katia again; those two had a really interesting chemistry, and Katya really shines as a mature woman when they are together. It's a side of her we didn't get to see so much when she was with Sergei.

... and how about the judging? I was surprised by the world team favoritism. Although I appreciated the quality of the judging-- they really did seem to be looking for the traditional elements in scoring the skaters, instead of just sort of going with the audience reaction completely. Nice to see.

All in all, this was the most enjoyable piece of skating for me to date this year. Kind of surprising too... I was just going into this wanting to see Oksana and also wondering how some of these other pros were doing... but they really put on some stellar performances tonight. Like some have said in the other thread-- most weren't gimmicky either; they were real quality performances. Okay... conclusion: I miss professional skating!

Okay.. what are your thoughts??

[Edited because... I forgot Kulik. Whoops  ]

A really mundane comment, here.

What was with those middle aged men skating in their undershirts? It put me right off. Come on guys, you can afford a costume designer. I don't want to see your underarms.

I was astounded by Kulik.
In fact, his performances reminded me of why we ever got involved in skating...I was beginning to not even watch skating on TV anymore.
He was fresh, powerful, musical, elegant, athletic, and sooooo handsome!
He could win the Olympics all over again and he is only 26!
I thought Kurt was a bit boring, and keeps redoing the same programs.
Both pair teams were outstanding and didnt water down any aspect of their skating.
Nobody can emote like Oksana, and there were traces of her former brilliance in her performances, although not technically first rate. She is the only skater I know besides Kristi Yamaguchi that can do sassy, jazzy numbers and clasical equally well.
All in all, this was a very good competition with strong skating and great artistic presentations, and it was nice to see that again!

about the undershirts..I agree, they could have used more creativity in costuming(Kurt and Brian).

Was this a joy to see on television! I attended the event, but knew I had missed a lot that the television cameras captured.

Oksana is the best I've seen her since 1994. Her Swan Lake warmed my heart. She owns the ice. Even her Russian Dance, imperfect technical program was gratifying because she fought for every jump.

The pairs were magnificent. I noticed that Elena and Anton will skate to Let Me Fall on tour and I may just buy a ticket just to see it skated again.

Ilia Kulik's programs reminded me why I started following skating (many years ago) as well. To borrow Tracy Wilson's expression, his skating is exciting. Ilia's skating remains fresh but I wonder if that wonderful, larger than life, fresh quality would remain had he remained eligible after 1998.

I'm just pleased that he continues to skate.

I totally enjoyed Ice Wars this time. Everyone skated really well within their sphere, IMHO. Thanks to the commentators for keeping the nastiness to a minimum.

I thoroughly enjoyed everyone, but seeing Ilia Kulik was best for me, for he is my fave.

I disagree that Ilia Kulik is "unrefined". Rather, he has his own particular style of skating...very fast, and huge, but very, very definite movements, and great difficulty. My daughter describes his skating as being "mesmerizing, like an ocean wave". Not sure how accurate it is to say he is not still pushing himself...his 3 axel is still incredible, and his lutz is also still just the best...difficult entry remains, and no one else even attempted same; as to spinning, he has never been a great spinner, but he is not the only one who traveled. His programs are stil fully loaded with real skating, including footwork, and he is very, very expessive...I think only Yagudin and Plushenko among the amateurs could legitimately beat him and not without a quad.

Kurt in the second number was just vintage Kurt...I loved it.

Oksana? Well, there is just no one like her...she skates from her center and from her soul, bare, ALL THERE, and I loved seeing her.

I recognized B&S's technical program music. They used a shorter selection of the same music for their short program in the 2001 season. Louis' old music page lists it as "Meadowland (traditional, arr. by Stanley Black)".

Yes, I enjoyed the performances from both pairs very much. Personally, my favourite program among then was S&P's skate to Queen. Among the singles, I'm glad to see Kurt and Viktor still going strong, and very happy to see Oksana back and looking that good. It's been awhile since I watched a pro competition. I hope they come back and regain their popularity after watching this one.

I thought the SAME thing.....and kind of wondered at the time if anyone else did........

For me, the program was worth it just for B&S's and Kulik's technical programs.

Brian's outfit fit the part. Kurt's was just his choice of costuming. C'est la vie.

Middle aged? That's a bit harsh, isn't it? Brian and Kurt are pretty well-preserved for the "olde farts" that some younger skating fans seem to think they are. But then, at 40, I must be well into "Olde Fartdom" myself, and possibly a little senile, 'cause I thought that they (especially Brian) looked great. :??

Kurt's costume was the same one he used at his Gotta Skate show, and it made sense there. The show was supposed to be one night at a night club, and Kurt essentially wore the same costume throughout (b/c he was sitting on the side through the whole show). When he got up to do Ding Dong Daddy, it was meant to be a bit of a challenge to Brian, so he aggressively took off his outer shirt (ie, his Moondance costume) and took to the ice. Made less sense outside that context but it wasn't entirely out of place.

I'm actually not clear how Brian in his undershirt fit the part of an investigative reporter, especially one taking notes at the crime scene. Sitting at home typing, I get that - as long as he was going to a bunch of props on the ice (wasn't this a *skating* competition?), why not bother with an overshirt to take off when he got home to write his story?

Anyway, I do take exception at the middle-aged guys in their undershirts bit - both Brian and Kurt look quite good. I haven't followed Brian as closely, but Kurt's physique hasn't actually changed all that much throughout his whole career.

Overall, though, I thought this Ice Wars was one of the best yet. Great skating from almost everyone, far from a splatfest, pretty decent scoring, and just one enjoyable night of skating.

I agree that it was great to see Oksana back on the ice and looking so fit. She is really an exceptionaly fine artistic skater and worth watching for that aspect alone, IMO.

KURT - Didn't see his first program, just the head-to-head vs Viktor. OMG! There is no better artistic skater competing in the world today. I put Kurt and Scott Hamilton on the same level. I hope Kurt performs Ding Dong Daddy at the Albany SOI.

Yes, this was a skating competition, but it was a professional competition and was meant to be fun. Despite the fact that I didn't much care for Brian's numbers, I think he deserves credit for trying something different. I also think that the folks who are downing him for the use of props are taking this competition way too seriously.

I thought it was completely stupid for Brian to have a huge desk as a prop for his number, however I don't think I took the competition too seriously. I enjoyed it a lot, and I do give Brian credit for his creativity, and really liked much of his choreography. Just don't think the props helped the number--only made it look worse than it could have without the props. And the time at the desk wasted several seconds he could have actually been skating which is what he was there for.

I thought the show was great as well. Is this the only pro-only competition of the year? If so, is this where S/P and B/S lost their eligibility?

The World Team Challenge is also a pro-only competition. It will be held in a week or so. Unfortunately, as far as I know, no individual pro competitions will take place this year.

I believe S&P and B&S lost their eligibility skating in pro tours.

;) I agree with whoever said they don't wanna see underarms. Kurt won the Buff contest obviously going on between him and Brian. BB's butt and legs are legendary, but his upper body needs some work. I never knew BB had underarms! Wish I could erase that visual. Strange their non-costumes were so similar. The old rivalries never do die.

As for the world team being all Russian, where was Kat? and Zee Philippe?..... speaking of no costumes...

I was so glad to see Victor skate. Post Oly tour 2002 had Victor doing the most nothing routine with a dog puppet. I thought his legs were broken. No jumps, no grace, can him, I thought. But he still works hard and it showed. His "I am zee sexy one look" kills me as I don't see it.

Kulik, Kurt, everyone else had their great moments. I was sad to see BB's offering. Way too many props filling the program. I suppose at 40 the Tano Lutz from a spread eagle is tough enough. It was perfect twice.

Oksana will never be that elfin otherworldly swan again, but she did jumps we have not seen in years. And she is in shape. Bobek is a georgeous skater. Always was. I love watching her with or without jumps.

Here's my review first of all I think I've watched all 10 of Ice Wars shows & Scott H. was missed as commentator. (he did commentate on most of the shows) He skated in a few also. Kurt= Moondance excellent except for his weird hair color. (great singer Michael Buble) Victor- Hotel California great. (miss seeing him on shows) Brian- didn't care for concept but liked the sleeveless shirt look. Ilia- Nutcracker excellent skater. Oksana- Vanessa Mae ok. Sale/Pell- Crying good song. Kurts 2nd one Ding dong daddy- excellent & with the hat and sleeveless shirt great. He got many 10's. Victor-Flight great singer. Didn't care for Brian's 2nd one. Ilia- a house is not a home great singer. Oksana- Swan Lake reminded me of 94. Fav song used by Berez/ Sikh. Let me fall by Josh Groban. Need more pro competitions like this. (to air in US & Canada on channels everyone gets)

Oh, yes... Kurt is far more "buff" than Brian. He also ran away with the "Blindingly-White Skin Trophy", too.

Me thinks Brian and Kirk and any guy who skates in his t's needs a trip to the auto tan booth before showtime. I thought it was my tru-lite lamp making them so white. Elvis was showing off his "buff bod"
last night, to all of them I say, "get a shirt!" I adore them but I don't want to see the hairy pits. Paul Wylie can be a classy example to these guys!;)
