This weekend I looked in three different newspapers for reports on the recent competitions. There was not one word printed about ice skating in any newspaper in SW Ontario AFAIK.
Needless to say, I was disturbed. 8O Up until now there has always been a small item squeezed in between the hockey and football news. LOL!
Perhaps the reason there was no news reflects the lack of TV coverage for these events. Or perhaps the newspapers now view figure skating in the same category as pro wrestling, and not a "sport".
Does anyone get a newspaper that still reports on figure skating?

Hamilton Spectator still prints about skating. Out here in BC, we get the Vancouver Sun that does
There was a brief blurb in the Hamilton Spectator about the results of the Bofrost Cup this morning.

Doesn't the Globe and Mail? At least they've had articles about skating, fairly large ones at that. The Province might, I'm not sure.

I can never count on newpapers anymore so I just set up Google news alerts for each competition and figure skating in general. Here's a link -

As far as I could see, the Globe and Mail didn't have any figure skating news on the weekend. I also checked the Sun and KW Record.
It is good to know that the Spectator covered some skating. Also good to know the Vancouver Sun does, too. When I move to BC next year I will have that to fall back on, anyway.
I wondered if the NA print media had dropped figure skating from their list of legitimate sporting events this year.
Of course, I rely totally on this board to supply my up to the minute fs news, complete with commentary and opinons.:D

There was a small, incomplete blurb about Cup of China in the Toronto Star. I expect the same will happen for the other Grand Prix events (unless a Cdn medals, in which case we might get a small article) but I'm not counting on coverage of events like Bofrost. Skate Canada got fairly significant coverage though.
What irritates me even more is when journalists are so blatantly lazy about checking their facts. I've seen Sale & Pelletier (and other pairs teams) referred to as an ice dance team, people winning Olys/World medals in the wrong year, a complete lack of understanding of the technical elements and judging....grrr!

When TSN wrote a piece about Yagudin retiring they said he was a two-time Olympic gold medalist 1998 and 2002. I wrote back and said he was a one-time olympic gold medalist and that Ilia Kulik won the gold in 1998.
Old-time reporters used to check their facts and these days when it's easier with the internet - they just seem to have got lazier...makes me mad.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch will usually run a small, 3 paragraph column on results. They devoted a little more coverage when it was first announced we got Nationals, including pictures.

The Post-Dispatch actually sent a sports reporter/columnist to 2003 Nationals in Dallas!!! 8O I believe it was partly because St. Louis had recently won the 2006 Nationals host city bid and also because a local skater qualified for Nationals in senior ladies (Kelsey Drewel). The reporter was new to skating, but did a very credible job, I thought, of reporting on the senior events in Dallas. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Post-Dispatch will be sending anyone to cover Nationals in Atlanta in January, but there's always hope for Portland in 2005...
