In today's issue of the Mail on Sunday (British national newspaper), there's an article about a Christina Aguilera show at Wembley Arena, London, where the writer makes a comparison between Christina & Britney and Tonya & Nancy. Here's what it says (page 77 - sorry, can't find a link so I'll just post part of it):

"A Strip That Lacks Tease"

Excerpt:

Britney's primacy over Christina came about through luck and timing rather than intrinsic merit. Both ex-Mousketeers are blank outlines, distinguished by the draughtsmanship of those who colour them in. Initially Britney got the better writers, producers and stylists, which left Christina playing catch-up.
The pair reminded me of rival ice skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. A twinkle-toed princess, serene in her own seemingly effortless success, and a tarty, hard-faced hustler. Granted, nobody's tried to nobble Britney's knees with a tyre lever. Yet.
But let's not forget - Tonya could really skate. And Christina can really sing. The girl has quite a set of tonsils on her and if she thought it would sell records, she'd show them to you, naked and vibrating.

Etc.

Any thoughts? I thought it was interesting that there was even a reference made to Tonya & Nancy, being as it's a British paper and it's not even an article about skating that they're mentioned in. Do you think the comparison is fair or not? Just thought I'd throw this out.

I'll comment on the singing part. Christina sure can sing. Whether or not you like her songs, she has a really beautiful voice that is well trained. Brittany on the other hand has a voice that is a dime a dozen. However she was packaged in a very easily sold manner.

Perhaps the same can be said about N and T.

I like the comparison.

And Tonya can really skate.

Hmm... interesting. At risk of dating myself, I would say the more pertinent comparison (in the pop world) would be between Madonna and Cindy Lauper. Pound for pound, I would argue that Lauper has a greater song-writing talent, but Madonna has a better ability to attract attention to herself. Thus with Britney and Christina. Christina has a better set of pipes, but Britney (who is the better dancer) seems to garner more attention. To whit, in all the discussion of the kiss between Madonna and Britney, no one seems to remember that Christina also kissed Madonna during the same performance.
