Which Skater Was It?

During Skate America(ladies competition) yesterday, they mentioned that one of the skaters was diagnosed with a few different things & was recovering. Who was it? I didn't catch the name.

Thanx for answering so fast! Wasn't she extremely ill a few yrs ago & almost died? How aweful, she doesn't deserve that!

I'm not sure about that a few years ago, but recently Irina has been in hospital with chronic bronchitis. I think she had it last year too - afaik it's a recurring problem for her. I think she's getting better though.

Are you maybe thinking of Tanja Szcewchenko from Germany? She was sick for quite awhile before she was finally diagnosed with, I think, Epstein-Barr virus. She was doing much better and tried to make a comeback in 1997-1998, placing either first or second at a GP event that year, but she got that flu that was going around at the Nagano Olympics and had to withdraw. Very sad- she was a beautiful skater.

Tonight on our broadcast of Skate Canada International they mentioned that Irina had been having heart trouble...though they did not mention what type...hope she is ok.
