It was so sad that Tara Lipinski's Nght of Skating at the Toyota Center in Houston was cancelled this Friday BUT... we got a really nice surprise this week in Sugar Land. PAUL WYLIE is visiting his parents and giving private lessons for three days at our rink. I watched him warmup yesterday to his mix tape and he was so entertaining that I wanted to stand up and applaud. I am an old fan who remembers watching him at the Olympics and Nationals way back when and hadn't seen him skate since. I'm going back to watch more. He is even going to do a seminar at our club ice on Friday on presentation and stroking. It's only for the club members--what a treat! Sorry to say that we haven't seen Tara who is a hometown Sugar Land girl, so far. From another board I see that she was in LA at some movie premier last night.

Oh, gosh, lucky you! I'm green with envy!! :-) If you're going to the seminar -- I didn't gather from your post whether you're a club member or not -- will you tell us about it? Thanks!

Someone on this list mentioned that Paul Wylie was planning a comeback. Is this true? Will we be seeing him in anything this year. If it is true, is he no longer working for Walt Disney? It would be so nice to see him skate again. I wouldn't even care if he didn't do any jumps. None of the current skaters today can even come close to matching his edge work.

Maybe we should have lobby to have him added as one of the special guest stars in SOI.

I'd love to see him in SOI, but they really need to find some ladies this year too.
Lucky pkins! And lucky club too - hope everyone has a great time!

Paul's seminar was fun for all. He arrived a little early, signed autographs and posed for pictures with the club skaters. Then he took to the ice leading about 40 skaters in stroking in a circle, slowly then very fast. There were many parents sitting in the bleachers who were quite delighted and applauded. The mix tape he used was from his Harvard program and contained "Swing Lo" and Love Me Like A Rock" to name a few. He continued leading the skaters through several types of stroking exercises with the biggest show smile ever. Again, the middle-aged parents enthuastically applauded. He has such a presence on the ice, it's like he lights up a rink.
The seminar continued with presentation techniques, but I was busy turned around listening to someone talk to his mom about future plans. She said that he had left Disney and was looking at various options. She that he didn't want to be involved with a commitment like SOI and such shows that travel. She did say that he was just having so much fun being on the ice again. You could definitely see it on his face---constant big smiles.
The webmaster from the skating club was there taking tons of pictures. I know she'll put them up shortly-- www.tgcfsc.org. I imagine they will be in the news section. Again, I'm sorry that Tara's Houston Skating show was cancelled, but this was great. Glad that I could share this little overview with you Paul Wylie fans. I don't think that my description did his ice presence justice, though, you just had to be there to feel the excitement.

pkins, thank you so much for the report and pictures--I'm extremely jealous!! As a devoted 20-year fan (I first saw him in 1984 and have absolutely adored him ever since), it is great to hear your description of how much he is loving skating again and is deciding on options. He has a lot he can offer if he ever decided to coach (although a lot of what he brought to the ice came from within and I'm not sure you can teach that).

Paul did skate at the Evening with Champions show at Harvard Univ. a few weeks ago. He's been the on-ice show MC for the past several years but never skated. This year he skated a program to close the show and got the biggest hand of the night. He was also hanging out at his old home rink during the recent NE Regionals down on Cape Cod. Very relaxed talking to people and signing autographs. He looks as fit as could be. Sure would be nice to see him do some shows.

I have loved Paul Wylie, forever. If he returned to skating, it would be the happiest news in the skating world (for me) in decades.
PLEASE, Paul, say it is true !!!!!! :yum:

I think it would be an awesome experience to get a lesson with Paul. Wow! I admire him as a skater, and was totally in awe seeing him in "Stars On Ice" a few years back. I'd probably fall apart just meeting him though, and spend the lesson throwing up! =-) The opportunity would be cool.
