Can't find the results anywhere and I'm very curious as to how the top skaters are doing, like Jeff Buttle, Takeshi and Jen.
I'm planning on going on Sunday, but I had hoped to be able to find the results before then.
Anyone have a link to where I could find a schedule for the event too?
Thanks! :)

Okay, I'm sure I'm going to feel extremely stupid for asking this question...but what does "R" mean in the FPl. column? It looks as if people w/ this next to their name didn't skate...but Takeshi is in first place without even skating???? Okay...put me in my place and tell me what this means

R does mean retired. I believe Takeshi was probably not planning to compete in both the short and the long so he withdrew after the short program. So in fact because the long program has not been skated he is still in the lead with 0.5 place points but is retired.

If you are registered in the entries for both short and long - doesn't that mean that you did plan to do it?
What about Lee & Faustino?? There is only marks for the short, but they were registered for the long according to the entries??
jp1andOnly
10-19-2003, 05:16 PM
because it is a combined event you register for both. Ther eare no options to just pick one. So even if you aren't planning on doing the long, you still register for it. This is why you see everyone skate the short because it is a combined event

ok review of sorts, no idea on what jumps really.......
Jeff Buttle (2nd) has another new costume for the long. Brown Pants with blue top and brown sparkles and brown shash......long sleeve, it doesn't hide his line at all. Very Good....picture on site to follow shortly. His long program, missed the second axel, he really sold it and got a standing ovation.
Ben F - long 1st overall--stole the show, he was the last to skate and had a standing ovation from the last 30 seconds of the program, I don't think I have ever heard Mariposa so loud. Solid program although not sure if he didn't double one axel and not sure if there was a quad or not. Awesome skate....
John Mattal came in third...was too busy running to take shots to really pay attention.
Takeshi didn't compete tonight as he is leaving for Skate America tomorrow.
Doherty and Myles won the Dance - by a landslide a few said. Had a little problem in the footwork, got too far apart from one another but still a georgeous program.
Lee and Faustino didn't compete, too bad I wanted to see them.
Senior women-Lauren Wilson (1st), Meagan Duhamel (2nd)having a blank ont he third.....
sorry I missed the short programs but Kurt's gotta skate took precendence....
Umm.....nothing else comes to mind, I just walked in the door....

I won't comment on every discipline... only the ones that stick out in my mind.
Senior Men's
Takeshi chose not to compete in the long program, but he was there today.
Wow! Ben was on fire in the warm up. He landed 2 spectacular quads in warm up -- he just FLEW up and across the ice! - he also landed a beautiful 3 axel 3 toe combo and a 3 lutz in the warm up. He was absolutely FLYING into his jumps, especially the quads.
Jeff, on the other hand, had a terrible warm-up. Great costume, great new short hair cut. But he came around to his coaches and kept saying, "I can't feel my legs!" He pounded his thighs, but couldn't even manage to feel comfortable doing singles. He was very nervous and very uncomfortable in the warm-up. He did manage to get in a 3 axel right in the last few seconds of the w. up.
A young skater by the name of Chad Goodwin from the Glencoe skating club was there, on the warm up with Ben and Jeff. He was having such an amazing time being on the ice with those two, especially with Ben. Ben would go and fly into a quad and Chad would follow him and fly into a triple (I take it he hasn't got his quad yet), but he was totally feeding off of the energy that Ben had and you could see that he was just so excited to be out there, in the final flight with these guys. It was great to see. Unfortunately, he had too much energy in the free skate, as he was overwhelmed and just didn't do what he did in the warm up.
As for Jeff and Ben, well, Jeff skated first, and you could tell everyone was nervous for him because of the crappy warm up he had. But in typical Jeff fashion he pulled it off. His artistry is just breathtaking, and his program is a true work of art. He landed a 3 lutz, popped a 3 toe (intended quad?), landed a 3 axel-2 toe combo (really fought for it), 3 salchow, did a very effective stop in the middle of the program where he drags his toe pick in the ice until he's stopped right in front of the judges - was very effective with the choreography, landed another 3 (I missed seeing the take-off, so I'm not sure what it was, I caught sight of him in mid air), landed a 2 axel, great foot work (best in competition) and finished with a nice 3 flip (I believe) and an awesome combo spin. Great job, saying that he couldn't feel his legs and could hardly land a single in warm up.
Ben was the last skater to take to the ice. He's such a classy guy. As he came onto the ice, Chad Goodwin was coming off, after a poor skate, and Ben took the time to skate to Chad and shake his hand (kind of a shoulder-level high five). It is very evident that Ben has really worked on developing this mobster character (he's using the same long program as last year). The character is much stronger than it was last year, with many more little nuances and facial expressions put in. A lot of attention to detail. It is also evident that his spins have improved since last year - faster with more creative positions. He began with a HUGE 3axel 2 toe (he did 3axel 3 toe in warm up), 3 toe (the quads were left on the warm up), 3 flip, 2 toe, amazing 3 lutz right on the beat of the music after a little pause (very effective), a second 3 axel, 3 loop, 3 salchow, good footwork (not as good as Jeff's though), and finished with 3lutz-2toe combo. And he got a STANDING OVATION and a thunderous applause with lots of screaming and cheering. He took command of the whole arena. It was so great. His wife was at the boards with Doug Leigh the whole time and was at his side all through the warm up and the weight to skate.
Watching Ben and Jeff actually brought tears to my eyes. We are very well represented with men skaters on the world scene right now. Both of these performances were world class, and I was honoured to be able to see them in my home town.
Senior Ladies:
Jennifer Robinson and Leslie Hawker did not compete.
Well, Lauren Wilson got an early Christmas present today. She won the long program based on what she "can" do (reputation), not what she "did" do. She basically imploded out on the ice, falling on almost every jump she tried. She does have nice spirals, but a spiral does not a gold medal make.
Meagan Duhamel got robbed. She ended up in 2nd, but she landed way more than Lauren, including a triple-double combo. She should have won (she was in 2nd behind Lauren after the short, which I didn't see).
Junior Dance Free
Sarah Lenko and Michael Whitehead (Barrie and Bradford SCs)deserved to win. They battled back from being 3rd in the original, and came out strong. Nice tight positions, great facial expressions, great footwork (flamenco steps to the music - like Maria Butyrskaya used). Very well done.
I was soooo impressed with the young team of Christie Anne Hansen and Kevin Gallagher (Glencoe SC and Upper Canada SC). They were dressed in funky sixties-style costumes (her's was an orange 2 piece with gold accent and his was and orange tunic style shirt with gold accent and jean-look pants with flared bottoms). This team got the audience's attention with their great flexible lifts, fast footwork, and amazing presentation. A well earned 2nd place.
The third place team of Alexandra Nino and Andrew Poje, also of the K-W SC, also were very impressive. Alex had a slight slip in the middle of the program, but overall, everything they did was striking. She wore a very pretty black v-neck dress with a low back. They had great presentation, excellent facial expressions, nice variety in their holds, good close positions, good choreography and strong skating skills.
Honestly, I was more impressed with these 3 JUNIOR dance teams than I was with many of the senior teams (with the exception of Doherty and Myles who were so far above the rest of the field). The Senior dance competition, with the exception of D&M, was a let down.
Senior Pairs,
not much of a competion. Faustino and Lee chose not to compete, which disappointed me, because I wanted to see them, but they won the short program and just chose not to skate in the long. After the competion, she said that they are competing in the Golden Spin of Zagreb in Croatia, November 11 - 15, 2003, which has her stressed, because it's so close to sectionals.
Becky Cosford and Kevin Macquire (both of Sport Seneca) ended up winning the event. She is a strong skater (she also placed 4th in the Junior ladies), in fact, she's a stronger jumper than he is. They didn't seem to skate as a team. I'm not convinced that he is the right partner for her. I see that she has a lot of potential. Their pairs elements are still very weak - lifts came down in the middle and when she was in the air, it was a little scary to watch. Same with the other team of Houghton and Campbell (again, she is the stronger partner).
well, those are my thoughts of the day...the ones that stood out.
[Jeff, on the other hand, had a terrible warm-up. Great costume, great new short hair cut. But he came around to his coaches and kept saying, "I can't feel my legs!" He pounded his thighs, but couldn't even manage to feel comfortable doing singles. He was very nervous and very uncomfortable in the warm-up. He did manage to get in a 3 axel right in the last few seconds of the w. up.
I thought I heard Jeff say at one point during the warmup that he couldn't bend his knees. I've never seen Jeff look so frustrated, but as you said, he still pulled off a strong, if not his best, program when it counted.

I was soooo impressed with the young team of Allie Hann-McCurdy and Michael Coreno of the Kitchener-Waterloo SC.
I believe you're talking about Christie Hansen and Kevin Gallagher. They were the ones in the orange outfits and this is like their 4th year in Junior. (but this is only their second year together I think)
Allie and Michael wore half black-half white costumes and are in fact training in Barrie now.

Thank you for the report. I'm so happy to hear Ben had an awesome skate. I hope he can duplicate it on the GP and get the quad in. It's a new program for him this year to The Untouchables. Last year's program was to Durango, and Irish movie. Perhaps you are remembering his 2001 LP which was a Ganster theme?

Ben Ferriera who still represents the Royal Glenora club and Chad Goodwin both used to train out of the Royal Glenora club in Edmonton till Ben moved to Barrie.
Great comments about both these skaters from the report. Very nice to hear.

How sad to read that Lauren Wilson got credit for what she has done in the past and not judged on what she didn't do this past weekend. kind of makes me sick. I know a lot of people who have stopped watching figure skating for this very reason. Thank goodness Octoberfest doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. It seems like there was some questionable judging in dance also. If the people who plan these competitions want these skaters to go to all the expense of coming there to compete they better start relaying to the judges to judge fair and only what is presented in front of them on that day. How can we get this through to these judges that judge these types of competitions? It seems to happen over and over again.

You did not miss anything when you missed the senior ladies' short. It was a true splatfest. Only one clean triple in the entire competition ( and that was a triple loop by one of the lower level skaters ). There were several badly cheated ( over 1/2 rev) jumps and splats all around.:frus: . Even Lauren Wilson and Duhamel both landed nothing more than a double axel in the short.
Who would have known that there would be so many falls in the junior free dance?

Adriana DeSanctis (first year senior) trains in Barrie (Robert Tebby is her primary coach there), but she was competing in the JGP in Japan this past week.

Thanks Isabelle, I've edited and changed my original post. I didn't know their names, but I sure was impressed with their presentation! What a promising young team.
As I said in my original post, I believe that, from this competition, we have more promising Junior teams than we do Senior dance teams.

More notes.
Michele Moore landed the only clean triple ( a loop )in the senior ladies short. Unfortunately that was the only clean jump in her short program.
Senior men's short notes
About Honda's short ( he did not skate the long ) He had a fall on quad combo, clean triple axel and step out on triple lutz. He also had a wonky flying sit spin. Even with the spinning error, his spins in general have improved from last year. ( based on both Thornhill and Octoberfest skates ). Even with the problems, he really sold the program.
Ben has the cleanest short, landing triple axel and lutz. He only tripled the quad toe. His performance level was nowhere near his free skate performance.
Jeff Buttle double the lutz and popped the quad. He however did land the triple axel. His spins were very good but not quite up to his normally very high spinning standards.( ie just a little bit off mainly with position)

i thought michelle moore landed a double axel in her short...
i NEED to add that Christie and Kevin were ROBBED. they're freedance was far superior to that of Nino and Poje with more difficult lifts and more intricate footwork. plus, nino and poje fell. can someone explain to me what i missed because i would rather watch christie and kevin anyday.

I totally agree with you. I had Christie and Kevin in 2nd place and Nino and Poje in 3rd, despite the fall. But Christie and Kevin totally sold that performance, and you're right, their lifts were the most difficult in the competition! They were senior level lifts.
I am actually REALLY surprised that they finished 4th. I just assumed that they would finish in 2nd. It was so obvious.

I also have to add that I was impressed with Ashton Tessier and Ashley Tataryn's free skates (Junior Ladies). I thought that Ashley's free skate was more deserving than a 3rd place. Ashton was sitting beside me in the stands...she's very pretty. But I also thought that Meagan Duhamell should have won the senior ladies, and that didn't happen either. I respect Lauren Wilson's skating, but on the day, she didn't deserve to win.

I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what she did, but I do know that she landed quite a few triples, and one I'm pretty sure was in combination. It was just amazing to see her smile so radiant on the ice. She was so excited about how she was skating that it totally reached the top of the stands and really upped her entire performance level. That was why I would have had her higher. I felt she had the best "performance" of the night. She had a great skate, but I'm sorry that I can't give you more detail than that. I didn't take notes unfortunately until the Senior men's comp.
