FARGO - CHAMPIONS ON ICE (June 30, 2002)

First of all the skaters that weren't there were Sarah Hughes, Sasha Cohen, and Philippe Candeloro. It was a very long day for me that started at 6am. I made the trek to Champions on Ice from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We got there fairly early which was good because I heard later on that there was a traffic jam and a number of people were late to the show due to being stuck in it.

By this time everyone knows what everyone skated to so I thought I would just mention my favorites as well as my friend's favorites. It was my friend's first time ever seeing figure skating (she hadn't even seen it on tv) so it was very interesting to hear about the show through her eyes. Since my friend had never seen skating before her favorites were definitely the ones that were either entertaining or amazed her (which really could've been any of them). Her first favorite was Dan Hollander's Cartman/Mrs.Doubtfire which was absolutely hysterical. Next she really liked Besedin and Polishchuk, and she really liked Victor Petrenko's Who Let The Dog's Out which she also found very amusing. She really enjoyed Rudy Galindo's program as well. The skaters that wowed her were Micheal Weiss, Elvis Stojko, and Evgeni Plushenko.

For myself the highlight of the evening was Elvis Stojko. He was the reason I travelled from Canada and he did not disappoint. He landed all of his jumps (although I couldn't tell you what jumps they were), had incredibly fast footwork, great audience appeal, and excellent hydroblading moves.

I really enjoyed Dan Hollander's Cartman/Mrs.Doubtfire. It was just pure entertainment and that fact that he could jump in that outfit was incredible.

I'd seen Besedin and Polishchuk on tv before but seeing them live was great.

Evgeni Plushenko had a wonderful spin in his program, it was incredibly fast. Unfortunately he did have a fall in his program but it was still wonderful.

Micheal Weiss was great! He had a lot of great gymnastics moves in addition to the jumps and spins.

Brasseur and Eisler had a really entertaining program and as always were enjoyable.

Michelle Kwan was wonderful and closed the show. I love Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold and Michelle skates to it beautifully.

The opening number was great as well and I really enjoyed the closing number.

From what I can remember there were not a lot of falls. Evgeni had one and Nicole Bobek had a few stumbles but all the skaters had a really great night and they were all extremely enjoyable.

I noticed that after a lot of years of Shae and Vic and Elvis being the only ones to do hydroblading moves and taking hydroblading to a new level a lot of the other skaters are now doing some hydroblading as well. A lot of them did some in either their program or their opening number. That was really great to see, I think hydroblading is really cool so I enjoyed that.

I'm not very technical in my reviews because I don't know a lot of the skating ins and outs even after years of watching it on tv but I hope you enjoyed my review anyway.

thanks for your review.
If I would have had the oportunity to go to COI, I, being an adult skater, would have somehow recorded what jumps, spins and moves my favs did. Elvis would have been picked apart. His programs always are done way to fast. I mean, I want to be able to hit replay over and over. I love Elvis' skating so much. It's his fault that I skate.
