2003 Boston Open 9/19 and 9/20
Boston, MA- Skating Club of Boston

NOVICE MEN FS

1. Stephen Carriere- 3s, 3z (fallout), 3t-2t, 3r (2foot and stepout), 2ax, 3t, 2f. Skated to Heartbreak Hotel. Very neat in footwork, nice camel and spin combo, good sit spin, nice hop with the music. Great strong, fast, smooth performance. Stephen looks well-trained and is great fun to watch. The technical content is very competitive for this level and it's exciting to watch. He's really come out with a bang this year-- looking forward to seeing him at Easterns. Needless to say, he had straight firsts...didn't have any competition here.

2. Timothy LeBlanc- 2z-2t, 2f turnout to 2t, 1ax, 2r (prerotated), 2z, 2s, 2t, 2f. Poor camel change camel to sit spin (fall), spread eagle looked disinterested. Travel on sit change sit. Music was Disney's Millenium Celebration. Overall, despite the problems, not bad.

3. James Kinicki- 2f, 2ax (little cheat), 2f (foot down), 2? (stepout), 2z (stepout and turnout), 2s, 2f (turnout) to 2t, 2z-2t (fall). Slip at very start of program, Good split, slow footwork, good sit spin, slip on spiral attempt, spin ok. Unfortunate performance...better luck to him next time.

NOVICE LADIES FS
1. Melanie Drogseth- 3s-2t, 2z, 2f, 2r, waxel ack!, 3s, 2f-2t. Good flying camel with bent leg position. Nice opening, strong edges, great flow and speed, good layback and spins, great presentation. Melanie has an amazing smooth performance quality that could take her far in this sport. Music is Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun.

2. Julianna Cannarozzo- 2ax, fall on 3s, 3t, fall on 3r, 2z, 3s-2t, 2ax, 2f. Good combo spin, very good straightline footwork. Strong skate to Carmen, but presentation was not as sparkling and seamless as Drogseth. Yet, it *was* very good and with the 2axel I think she has a good chance of making nationals if she skates well.

3. Angela Kaufman- 2t-2t-2t, 2r, fall on 3s, 2f, some kind of mistake on axel, pop flip?, 2f to 2t?. Layback ok, Ina Bauer, spins ok. Phantom of the Opera.

4. Laura Duell- 2r, 2s, 2f and 2t, and 1ax were the clean jumps. Layback and spins good. Overall needs more speed. Music included disco Firebird.

5. Justine Weinberg- clean content was 2f-2t. Spirals and footwork good, spins ok. Needs more speed.

6. Jessica Farnsworth- clean content was 1ax, 1z-2t, 2f, 2s, 2r, 2t. Spiral ok, footwork and spins need improvment. Good split jump.

INTERMEDIATE LADIES FINAL FS

1. Brittney Rizo- 3t, 2ax-2t stop, 3s, 2r (prerotated), 2ax, 2f to 2t, 2z-2t. Amazingly solid technical content for a skater on the intermediate level. Spins great, very solid, great presentation, great split...wheee! Music Tara used at the Olympics-- The Rainbow? Could be a factor at junior nationals if she continues at this level.

2. Caroline Herlihy- 2r good, 2z-2t, 2ax-2t, 3s underrotated and turnout, 2ax stepout, 2f, 2s. Layback ok, fast overall skating with nice footwork, good walleys, shaky spiral. Overall solid, good job.

3. Janessa Cammaratta- 2f to 2r, 2ax-2t, fall on a 3s attempt (or 2s, hard to tell), 2ax (stepout and foot down), 2z-2t, 2f. Good spins, layback, good circular footwork, excellent camel spin, great presentation to Havana.

4. Genevieve Deutch- 2f, 2s, 2ax (und/stepout), 2r-2r, 2z-2r, 2z, fall on 2f, 2t. Spins fine, footwork ok. Good control and presentation to scary-ish music.

5. Sabrina Logren- waxel, 2f, fall on 2ax, 2?, 2z-2r, 2r. Good flying sit, very good presentation, slip and fall on something I missed, good spins, gorgeous final combination spin. Very strong and zippy skater with good control over her skating. Spiderman.

6. Deborah Lee- 2f?, 2s, 2z turnout/stop, 2? (turnout), 1ax, 2r-2r, 2z-2t, 2? Nice carriage, good Ina Bauer, layback good, footwork ok, spins good. Swan Lake.

Senior Ladies SP

1. Kristin Tudisco- 2ax (cht), 3t (slight cheat), fall on 3s. Layback ok, good spin combo, spirals need to be held longer, nice circular footwork, good flying camel. Nice skate to Speed.

2. Kristen Ward- 2t turnout/fallout, fall on 3z, 2ax not great. Poor layback with bad back position and unattractive leg position. Good spiral, good jump sit, spin combo ok, nice speed, footwork fine. Nice, mature performance.

3. Stephanie Crugnola- 2ax (cheat and 2ft.), 3s bad two-foot, 2z. Good layback nice speed, nice camel position, skating slow but with good posture, footwork fine, spirals need more coverage. Skating did not seem to go with/express the Cirque d' Soleil music.

4. Julia Nyitray- 2t (cheat?), 2s stumble to 2t, fall on 2ax. Good spin combo with very nice positions, fantastic layback with dropped leg, great spirals, good footwork. Music was Middle-Eastern type...she doesn't really jump well but her other elements were of very high quality.

Senior Ladies FS

1. Kristen Ward- 3t-2t, 2ax-2t, fall on good 3z attempt, 3r (ur/2foot)-2t, 3s (2foot), 2ax, fall on 3t, 2f. Polovetsian Dances was the music. Huge flying sit spin-- great! Good expression and stretch, nice presentation to the audience. Good spin combo, spirals fine, unattractive layback position with good speed, nice flow and split jump. Very finished performance-- reminiscent of Tonia Kwiatkowski. Compared to the competition, Kristen had far more speed and coverage and nice high, fully-rotated jumps. Glad to see the judges reward all her strong qualities-- she could be a factor at regionals and sectionals this year if she performs to her ability-- congrats to her for upping the jump content over last season!

2. Kristin Tudisco- 2ax-2t, 3t (cht.)-2t, 3s-2t, very nice tano 2r, 2f, 2ax (cht.), 3s (cht), 2z, 3t (maybe cheat?) Spin combo good, flying sit also good, layback nice, spirals too small/no coverage/not held long enough. Good spin to finish.

3. Michaela Maione- 2r, 2f-2t, 2ax, 2r, 2?-2t, 2s (turnout), 2ax (foot down)-2t, 2z. Layback ok, slide skid spiral, good split jump, slow footwork. Overall slow but fine. Music was Bond and DeBeers diamonds forever theme-- liked it.

4. Marina White- 2z-2r, 2ax (cht/fallout), 2f-2r, 3r (very cheated/fallout), fall on 2z, 2s, 2?, 2f. Malaguena was the music. Good layback, footwork could be faster and more difficult. Spirals need more conviction/strength/power. Overall nice skate.

5. Stephanie Crugnola- fall on 2ax, 2f-1r, 2z, fall on 2r, 1s, 2f, 2r (stepout). Camel spin slow but with good position. Good walleys into her single sal. Layback ok, spiral nice but needs more ice coverage. Nice effort in performing choreography, but overall she needs more speed. Music was Addams Family.

6. Amanda Marston- fall on 2ax, 2s, 3s cheat and fallout, 2f, fall on 2z, 2ax (cheat and turnout), 2r, 2f. Music sounded like Scheherezade. Nice arms in spin, nice movement on the ice, good spin combo. Good job.

7. Julia Nyitray- 2ax (very cheated), 3s (very cheated) to 2t, 2z (cheat), 3t (cheat), 2ax (very cheated), 2f, 2s, 2r, 2f (cheat). Music was Jazzy. Good spirals, fast skating to start, serpentine footwork ok, spins ok.

JUNIOR LADIES SP
1. Kayla Freeborn- 3s-2t (maybe slight cheat on 3s), 2ax, 2f. Sit spin ok, spirals ok, good camel to catchfoot, good footwork and layback. Music was Malaguena.

2. Jessica Ranko Houston- 3t-2t, fall on 2f, 2ax. Gorgeous spin combination with interesting new positions, good spirals that could be held longer, footwork fast, great choreography. Very solid, fun skate to Shakira's Objection Tango.

3. Sarah Farley- fall on 3s, 2f, great 2ax. Good jump sit but it slowed down, combo spin and spirals good. Nice skate to Going to America.

4. Monica Laverdiere- 3s-2t (stumble/stepout), 2ax (turnout), 2f. Layback and footwork good, final spin combo very strong. Music was Vanessa Mae, I think.

5. Young In Bae- 2ax, 3t?-2t (couldn't see this as the @$#()%* video camera/camera man was in the way), 2f. Great layback but somewhat slow, jump sit slowed, good coverage, good extension on spirals. I didn't notice her footwork so perhaps she got a deduction on this-- otherwise I thought she'd be higher. I definitely missed *something*. :p

6. Haley Ellis- 2ax lean, 3r (stepout)-2t, fall on 2f. Good spin to start, good footwork, fallout of flying sit spin- bummer! Nice green costume-- Haley has a great look on the ice.

7. Hauer- falls on all 3 jumps: 2z, 2ax, and 2f. Layback position ok, spirals need improvement, slow flying sit, loud stroking and slow. Music was Princess Diaries.

8. Solera- 1ax, 1f?, 3t (2foot). Layback slowed down, footwork good. Overall fine.

JUNIOR LADIES FS

1. Jessica Ranko Houston- 3t-2t great, 2f-2t, 3r, fall on 3s, 3t, 2ax, 2f. Great innovative spins, good footwork. Great control-- she really seems to be over her skates. Music was Caravan (at least to start). Jessica is a wonderful skater with loads of charisma and complex choreography that expresses the music very well and which doesn't let up at all throughout the performance. She does this all while maintaining great speed and sparkle. Costuming, hair, and makeup all fab.

2. Young In Bae- 2ax, 3s-2t, 2z-2r, 2.5t (two foot), 2f, 2ax, 2r. Good camel and spiral, good control, nice spins/positions, circular footwork. Solid skate to ET.

3. Haley Ellis- 2f, fall on 3t, 2ax, 3r, 2f-2r (hop), 2s, 1ax, fall on 3t. Good facial expression and arm movements, very good layback, spirals ok, nice spin, great combination spin including a pancake position. Tango/Spanish music.

4. Kayla Freeborn- 2f, 3s, fallout of 3r, 2ax (underrotated/2footed/fallout), fall on 3t, 2z. Nice layback, spin ok, Ina Bauer ok, footwork ok, smooth/good, nice camel. I feel this program could use more original and standout moves/moments. Music was Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, I think. Sounded like Elvis' music anyway.

5. Michelle Boulos- 2ax, 2z (high!), falls on 3r, 3t, and another 3t. Fallout of 3s. Skated to Out There from Hunchback, along with other pieces. Good control/timing, good flying sit, layback ok, nice speed throughout, good spiral positions.

6. Monica Laverdiere- 2f, fall on 3s, 2z-2r, waxel, 2r-2r, 2?, 2f. Good combination spin, split, nice spiral, good expression, footwork pretty good. Nice performance to a gorgeous piece of music by Bill Whelan called Firedance (at least that's what it was called on Kazaa).

7. Kristina Nolte- fall on 2ax, 2z-2t, fall on 3s, 2r, 2f-2t, 2r, 2z. Nice high spirals with not enough coverage, layback spin needs improvement, ok footwork, slowed towards the end. Performance to Scheherezade not bad but could use more originality.

8. Nicole Solera started with a nice fast spin combo but otherwise had a rough skate.

9. Johanna Hauer had a tough skate as well. But yay for her skating to some lovely music called Rebel Heart by The Corrs. I've never seen anyone skate to this before but it's great for skating and nice to listen to otherwise.

Thanks for the review, haribobo! Wish I could have made it to the competition, but my husband had to work this weekend, and dragging the girls to a competition can be very expensive... (I'm hungry, I'm bored, can I have..., LOL!)

And way to go Haley, 3rd in the LP!
