CHALLENGE CUP REPORT SATURDAY 9/13/03
SR LADIES FS, SR MAN FS, JR LADIES FS, JR MEN FS, JR PAIR SP
SENIOR LADIES FS
Andrea Varraux- 2ax, 3r, 2z-2t, 1t, 2ax, popped both sal attempts. Jumping technique looks very strong. Expressive and fun program to Bond, one of the pieces being Quixote. Program included a lovely spread eagle, very good sprial positions, good fotwork right into a cool looking final spin. Solid and smooth throughout. Watching Andrea reminds me of something Peggy Fleming said about Angela Nikodinov back around 98 or 99-- she always looks very calm when she skates, never flustered or nervous, and that puts you at ease.
Joelle Forte- 3r, 2z stepout, 3t (2foot) to 2t, 1ax stepout, 2s came out on two feet, 3t good, fallout of 3s. Program to Miss Saigon didn't work for me, probably due to numerous errors which took the life out of it-- wasn't crazy about the music cuts either. I generally like watching Joelle skate, though, just wasn't her night. Spin combo good, good MITF including Ina Bauer and spirals, very nice final spin. As a whole, I could imagine liking this program a lot more when she's having a better day...
Laura Wetzel- 2f-2t, fall on 3s (she landed this in warmup), 2ax-2t (slight cheat?), inteded 3r but less than 3 revolutions in the air, 2fz, 2ax (slight cheat?). I do see some good progress in the jumps which is encouraging, because she could really be a contendor with a couple clean triples and a 2ax. Excellent layback, gorgeous fast spins all around with great centering, including a Biellman. Excellent spirals. Lost balance on a spin at the end. Laura skated with great carriage, posture, and positioning throughout. Strong performance to Paganini and/or Rach. Whatever Angela skated to in 99. I'm tired. :p
Jennifer Park- 3r stepout, fall on attempts at 3f, 3s, 2ax, and 3t. Popped loop, 2t ok. Spin to upright position with leg held up very good, nice walleys..layback pretty good, nice end section. Pearl Harbor.
Hogue- 2f, 2r, 1ax, and 2f. I believe she only tried/did these four jumps in the entire program. She is a skater who is not at all about the jumps...with tons of detail in this program, I am wondering if this is a dancer turned skater, never heard of her before. Nice spin to Biellman, nice expressive arms, good spin position that slowed as it transitioned from camel to layback to upright, very sharp presentation, good posture, nice leg stretches, pretty good footwork, generally slow spins, tons of choreo......interesting performance, and fortunately, even though this type of content won't do much for her at the regional level, she didn't fall at all!
SENIOR MEN SP Exhibition
Rusty Fein- 2ax, 3f (good)-3t (und/stepout), 1z. He looked to have good command of the jumps in warmup. LOVED the earth-toned costume with headband which fit the music very well. Intricate, expressive, and exciting choreography like nothing I have seen before-- originality like this is moving-- well done by coach, choreographer, and skater! Strong spins, good program. Loved it.
JUNIOR MEN FS
1. Rouse- 2ax!, 3z-2t!, 3s!, 3f-2t!, 3z!, fall on 3r, 2t. I put exclamation marks on the jumps because they were so high, quick, and perfect looking! Really impressive. +++ on the spins, both in speed and position, super posture and stroking. YESSSS!!! I love Traighe's skating!! Everything is super high quality, and he's a great performer too, so much fun to watch! WHEE!!! GO TRAIGHE!
2. Solonoski- 3r good, fall on 3z, 3t good, 3s, 3r-2t, 2f, 2ax. All jumps very good, very nice jump sit, gorgeous spins, good footwork and coverage, great conviction. Gorgeous choreography/performance. This was a very solid skate, and this is a great program for him. Romeo and Juliet was the music.
Senior and junior men were fun!!!
JUNIOR LADIES
1. Teresa Lin- 2ax, 3f (fallout), 1s, 3t stepout-2t, 3r fallout, 3s-2t, 2z. Spartacus. Program was so perfectly choreographed to the music, that it seemed familiar even though I have only seen it once so far. Spin combo good, nice spirals with the music, layback had good speed, ok footwork, good spins, solid, maybe a little cautiously slow to avoid falling off the rink-- there are no barriers at this Ardmore rink.
2. Vanessa James- 3t-2t, 3s hop, fall on 3r, fall on und. 3f attempt, 3s, 2ax good, 2ax hop, fall on 2f, fall on 2z. Some good spins, some not so good, spirals could be held longer. Great expression in all footwork and thru the program. Music was Bond.
3. Britt Adams- fall on 2ax, 3t stepout to 2t, fall on 3t, 2ax good, 2z, 2f-1t. Excellent sit spin, nice spins throughout, fast skating, good spirals, cute footwork section. Ended with an awesome final combo spin. Overall she was really fast and had a lot of spark and energy-- really enjoyed this. Music was Bond also.
4. Sow- 2z-2t small, 2ax (cheat), 2r-2r, 3s stepout, shaky 2f-2t, 1ax, 2r. Summertime was the music. Nice spirals with good ice coverage, layback ok with good speed, spin combo had some rough transitions, nice final spin though. With more height on the jumps and smoothing out the rough areas, she could be quite strong.
5. Mayo- 2ax stepout, 2f-2t, 2f, 1ax, 2r, small 2z. Nice split/leaf?, good spin which could improve on positions...(needs to hold the positions longer for spins and spirals). Overall not bad skate to Variations/Rach.
8. Ashton Blust- 2f to 2t, 2r, fall on 2ax, 1z came out on 2feet, fall on 3s, 2t good. Good combo spin, nice fast layback, good coverage and spiral which was held for a nice long time and transitions to a bent leg position, great with the music. I had to mention her because I so appreciated her program to Spiderman which gets an A+ for concept and execution of the theme and expression of the music. Very cool choreography, and I feel that she should have been a couple of spots higher-- the quality of her skating is extremely high even if her jumps weren't there tonight.
JUNIOR PAIRS SP
Varraux/Pelletier- wow they look sharp! Sbs 2axels great, throw 3salchow good, fall on combo spin, good lift. Great music-- Romeo/Juliet by Prokofiev. +++ for choreography/execution, good energy...sharp and fast. I'm getting excited by this pair's abilities and potential.
Overall a really enjoyable afternoon of skating. Souths should be great!

5. B/Corona
6. E/Serebrenik

K-D/A did a nice job with their rock n' roll freedance to Bad to the Bone and Johnny B. Goode. Error on dismount on last lift but other than that, nicely skated with good expression, lots of speed and flow.
R/T were very fast with their swing/blues. Very good lifts and twizzle section.
B-K/D skated to an contemporary eastern selection. Very nice looking team but seemed to think through the program, could use more speed and flow but that will come with skating together longer.
E/T skated to an Inxs medley with a bad fall on her part on a twizzle, this caused them to miss about half of their circular footwork. Expression could be stronger and I felt that they were held up a bit.
B/C skated to a Frank Sinatra medley. Soft classical program but the twizzle section was off.
E/S had a very nice skate and were definitly put lower than they should have been. Very nice lifts and twizzle section. They are a much better matched team now that she has grown more.
L/J went back to their James Bond freedance from last year. Skated with good enery but free legs were kicked around and not held. Program was a little frantic.
Overall, a very nice event.:)

Thanks for the good reports.
I also love the team of Isabel E. and Dimitry S. and feel they are often undermarked.
No freedance from Stacy and Peter again?????8O
This is the third Novice dance competition of the season they have done since July without putting out a freedance, and it is mid Sept.
Everyone has heard that old argument that complusory dances indicate a teams' skating ability, but I have never bought that, and this team is a perfect example of why I feel that way.
When they competed at Jun.Nats as Intermediates they had to qualify with a freedance. They got dead last, and failed to qualify, yet they had received very strong compulsory placements earlier that year.
No team chooses to hide a good freedance.
They are getting 1st place marks consistantly in compulsory dance for their striking good looks/beauty, their line, their body types, their costumes...all of that is excellent...but I am curious to see if they can do complex twizzles, difficult footwork, interesting spins, and fast skating with changing positions/handholds yet. If not, they shouldnt be held up .
