I am looking for a skating training center my child and I can attend for two-four weeks. We are from the south and have a place to stay in Maryland for free. (yeah) Is there a traing center in that area worth traveling to, or should we travel to another city? I'm just looking for some options. My skater is Pre-pre and working on an the axel.

There is a good ice rink in Laurel with good coaches... I believe called Garden's ice house or something? If you are in Northern MD then traveling to the University of Delaware FSC would be the best option.

If you do decide to go to UDel for a few weeks, I recommend you contact some coaches ahead of time so you can have at least some lessons lined up. Things can get pretty booked up for many of the coaches there. You can find a listing of coaches with the areas they teach and contact info at the ice arenas web site. There is a link from the figure skating club web site, www.udel.edu/udfsc .

The Gardens Ice House in Laurel would be a good place to start. It is about 20 minutes from DC or Baltimore. You can find directions on their website, www.thegardensicehouse.com; I think that there is info on some of the coaches as well. Also in a similar area are Columbia Ice Arena, Piney Orchards Ice Arena, Benfield Pines Ice Rink and Bowie Ice Rink. There are also several rinks in and north of Baltimore, and a bunch closer to DC. Good Luck.
