Hackensack camp- who's going??
Well, pending on my vacation approval from work, I will be attending the Adult Training Camp in Hackensack, NJ in June.
Anyone else going and for those that have attended- what can we expect? Terri |

Here are the article and photos from last year's camp: http://www.usfigureskating.org/Story.asp?id=106
They might help give you an idea of what the camp can be like. I hope you are able to go! -Michelle

Terri,
I haven't made up my mind yet, but I did go last year and had a great time. And I was the one who Toeloopy quoted as saying our certificates should have been certificates of survival. Feel free to PM me if you have some specific questions; I don't have time right now to write much. But I did post some stuff over on the forums on www.goldenskate.com . Pat |

I can't go - bummer! Too far away and expensive. I was at the first adult training camp in Chicago, though, and had a great time! I wish they could offer these in different places around the country each year so more of us could participate.

I have a wedding on that Friday but my pairs partner and I are going to Lake Placid for the adult training camps and we're going to a special pairs clinic in Chicago in July. I've heard the Hackensack camp is fun and it's practically in my back yard. Maybe next year. Let us know how it is though!

I don't think I have the stamina to do 2 full days of skating. Are most of the attendees beginners or advanced? Someone mentioned "survival" certificates -- is it grueling or fun?
It's tempting -- $250 for a weekend is not expensive, but I could drive there from home. I wouldn't have lodging costs.

Isk8NYC -- I was the one who thought it should have been a certificate of survival, LOL. It is tiring of course, but it's not like you're on the ice all day long for two days. The on- and off-ice sessions are mixed up, so you might be on the ice for two sessions, then off for a couple of hours. They also had one scheduled break each day for each group. Plus lunch, of course, which was great at that point! And you can always pace yourself and skip some things. Last year my group's moves class was at 8 am the second day and only about half the class showed up. If I go this year, I might skip my spinning class only because I'm such a retarded spinner I don't think it helped me that much.
We were grouped by test level, and there was even a no-test or working on pre-bronze group. I thought I was on the low end of my group but it was quite comfortable for the most part. But if you go, you will be very tired at the end of each day. I remember at the end of the first day, I went out to dinner with a friend (I was starving!) and then crashed around 8:30 or 9. The most tiring things were the stretching class (yikes, I'm no pretzel!) and the off-ice jumping class that John Zimmerman did. John's class was tiring because, well, we were jumping! But it was great and a lot of fun. Tiring yes, grueling to me, yes, but also fun. And the moves class at 8 am was challenging, but it was great, and I was certainly wide awake when the instructor was done with us! That was actually one of my favorite classes. And I think I've said before that Artur Dmitriev was one of my heroes at the end; he was so wonderful and so funny and patient. When he had the group trying camel spins I was just doing my pitiful one foot forward spin, and he would smile and wink at me and tell me to just keep doing that, and that I would get it. You might want to consider staying there anyway, unless you live really quite close. The rate we had last year at the Marriott was very, very good and the hotel was beautiful. I know Hackensack is close to NYC, but you might not feel like driving back and forth. Pat |

the camp sounds wonderful! I would love to be able to go. Can anyone tell me more about the stretching class? I did hear that it would be better if they had more mats for the students. Can anyone remember what the class was like/some of the tips? I really would like to find ways to improve my stretching and not to mention Tatiana happens to be one of my favorite gymnasts.
Please feel free to PM me if you went to the stretching class.

Terri- I didn't stay very long last year on Friday evening (I had dinner plans) but I remember people being dressed very casually. Or at least I was, so maybe that's what I'm remembering. But it's an opportunity to meet some of the people participating, renew acquaintances, and pick up your packet with your schedule, other helpful info, and your T-shirt.
I haven't decided yet if I'm going, but I'm sure you'll have a good time! Pat edited to add: As far as extras go, bring lots of layers because it was very cold last year. A mat or blanket for the stretching class would be good, too. Maybe some snacks you can carry in your skatebag, since the only time we got any food was at lunch. I like to snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon, so I would bring something. |
