hi everyone. My name is Jessica.
I started Figure skating when i was 9 and I took lessons for close to 2 years. Then I decided to quit because "i didn't like getting up early" (kids! ugh...wish i'd never quit)
Well, I'm finally picking it up again and I have my first private lesson tomorrow. I am so excited. I've gone to a few public skate sessions the last couple days to practice and surprisingly im still pretty good. I can still skate backwards, do a couple jumps and spins and such...but i dont remember what anything is called or if im even doing them right.
The thing is, I am 20 years old now and i kind've feel too old to be doing this. It seems Like most figure skaters are so young. I just hope there will be other people in my age group.

Welcome back! There is a huge community of adult skaters in the US and around the world. There are opportunities for adults that didn't exist when you were skating as a kid. You can test and compete with other adults at your same level/age. It's definitely a lifetime sport, and you'll be re-addicted in no time. Enjoy!

Welcome back. I was more than twice your age when I started skating, and I didn't have the advantage of having skated as a kid.

It won't take you long to get your skills back, and then you will progress from where you left off.

Just in time! The age for adult tests and competitions just went down from 25 to 21 so you will be able to test and compete next year! You sure are getting a head start, too. I took my first skating class at 27.

You're not too old! I'm nearly twice your age and DIDN'T take lessons until I was about 30. Have fun with it!

thanks everyone . You guys helped me to feel better about the age thing. I'll keep you all updated.

If you have a choice of rinks, you might want to look around and see which has the adult population. I skate two rinks regularly--at the competitive one where my son skates I'm usually the only adult on a freestyle session, but at the fun rink, I'm usually the youngest non-coach on the adult dance sessions. (And I'm 45...)

I started skating at 21 - so around your age. I am one of the younger adult skaters at 26 now.

Same here- minus the bit about skating as a kid, that's just wishful thinking on my part!

My mum knows a woman from work who went skating and told this story:

"When I came in, there was a woman crying on the benches, and I asked what was wrong. She said that she hated skating and she nearly fell over and she was so scared... she was there with her 3 daughters, but didn't want to skate anymore.

I ended up skating with her 3 daughters because they were bored *bored at an ice rink???-me* and she never came back on the rink"


well, I think that
a) why didn't her daughters help her? I taught my mum to skate...
b) all you guys are so brave to start skating at such an old age

I also started at age 20. I feel like now, I have a huge advantage in the adult skating world because I started so young! If I could offer some advice, though- I didn't start testing and competing until about 2 years ago, and I really, really wish I started sooner. My advice is not to wait too long before thinking about testing or competing. That's really my one regret!

That's an interesting point. I've recently wondered whether I'm being too ambitious to attempt to compete at my level (other than in beginners competitions), but perhaps it will be a good think to get the experience early...

From what I've seen of your skating, you're a lot better than I was when I started competing! Which wouldn't be difficult - you're probably a lot better than I am now, at that....

Hi I started early compared to alot of the people here at around 18 and I'm 24 now... (even if i still feel old compared to the other kids at the rink) but its still cool and I'm working on my doubles and have all the common basic spin types (except the death drop and the crossfoot)
So you definetly have alot to look forward to!! Glad to see you here

Thanks a lot for the advice. I've actually already decided I'm going to compete for sure...probably within the nest 6 months- 1 year. And I've already started my testing. I know I'd be doing this--> if i didn't. It's great to be back on the ice.
